    In a game of Call of Cthulhu I played in years ago, one of the investigators was a real salt-of-the-earth southern old man. The running gag was that every time he passed a sanity check, he just said "that ain't real" and went on about his business like it never happened. To this day the phrase "that ain't real" makes me laugh.

      I did a character like this in a campaign. It was this unknowable arcane sigil that followed her around. It used to be an archangel but it fell. I was playing a little elf girl who had not an ounce of sense to her. She trusted everyone implicitly, including this fallen archangelic sigil and so much of the time her patron was just effectively getting her out of trouble that she put herself in, because it knew that if she died so did it.
      It was trying to teach her how to survive, and any advice that revolved around abandoning faith in any individual she would brush off, like "no, no they're just playing." Or "no silly, people are inherently good, we can't just leave them, they'll get hurt." When in truth they were like, brigands or cultists.
      Two of the main dmnpcs that started following us around we're actually just randomly generated enemies at one point who didn't want to let her down.

    It's similarly reflected in bloodborne. At low insight, the winter lanterns have to deal a lot more frenzy damage to fuck you up; but at high insight, a single glance at them could rob you of your entire life gauge

      @chazaqiel2319 2 года назад +186

      I just love how thematic it is that insight, mechanically, does absolutely nothing. It's literally just for lore and completion purposes, but in regular gameplay it's nothing but a liability. Have fun facing the cosmic horror!"

    • @reperfan4
      @reperfan4 2 года назад +181

      Oddly enough there's another way Bloodborne shows how this kind of stuff could be avoided with the Skeptic Man NPC. He's the only NPC with a questline that never ends with him going insane and it's not because he's dumb - he's actually one of the most lucid and intelligent NPCs in the game. Rather it's because every time you interact with him he calls you a liar while claiming HE knows the REAL truth, any advice you give him he'll do the opposite, and any time he comments on other NPCs and what he thinks of them his interpretation is always the exact opposite to what they're actually like. He literally avoids insanity by stubbornly just living by a "I reject your reality and substitute my own" mentality and interpreting everything he sees as some kind of trick that he's "too smart to fall for."

If I remember correctly, if you were going to gain an insanity you rolled an INTx5 check, and if you *failed* you didn't go mad because you didn't comprehend what you saw. I scrapped it because I ran for a lot of min-maxing fiends who would absolutely make the stupidest possible characters. People give Lovecraft shit for his racism (even by the standards of the time), but while he was certainly that, it was just the tip of the crazy iceberg. Dude was seriously mentally damaged. Take a look at what he thought about anybody from a small town before you give him credit for overthrowing classism.

    In Call of Cuthulhu there is a similar mechanic. When you lose more than 5 sanity in a single moment, there is a chance for your character to go Temporarity Insane, which is really bad news. You roll an Intelligence check and if you FAIL, then you do not comprehend what you are seeing and do not slip into temporary insanity.
