Now that we've seen this happen multiple times and look back at their music and behavior, it is guaranteed Dave is happy and has no reason to think of doing anything like that. HUGE difference in personalities and behavior. THANK GOD!!!
I love current Foo Fighter music, but there was something really special to me about the early years. The songs were more simple, and Grohl at his pop purity.
As Dave wrote those songs during the Nirvana era I guess he pretty much had that Nirvana formula still in mind. It wasn't about complexity, it was about writting punk but also melodic simple riffs that made you want to start breaking shit. There was something beautiful about that simplicity. Just a good riff, a kickass drumline and weird lyrics...

That first album is an absolute masterpiece. The sound is raw and direct, grungy but very different from Nirvana. He never tried to copy Kurt's songwriting or cash in on the grunge movement. Now we take everything for granted, and he's 'Dave Grohl', but back then he was 'the guy from Nirvana', which now sounds weird, like it's another person.
The journey of Dave and the foo fighters is so fascinating. Producing songs in the beginning that are STILL popular to exploring to own their identity, many styles,, zero ego, total humility,.....yet no matter the style, can identify authentic Foo Fighters every time. Real music never dies
Still remember hearing this song for the first time, while walking around in Australia, and immediately buying it. The final passage where's he's shout-singing "I'll stick around" still gives me shivers. Though I couldn't figure out what he was saying and eventually settled on "Optical realm!"
Watching Dave listen as if hes hearing it outloud for the 1st time while remembering what he felt when he wrote it suddenly overtaken by memories sad and happy
I remember when I heard about this project on MTV news before it came out and I cried tears of joy as 11 yr old or 12 yr old mourning the loss of Nirvana and Bush was big at the time and there was just this void. When the album dropped I was just a kid with no money and my cousin copped it knowing I had to have it. I traded my Jerry Stachouse jersey for it clearly ripping my self off for it. Don’t regret it. Did the same for the Colour and The Shape. Lol. Only it was an amp I didn’t use.
I got In Utero in 2017 just as my junior year of highschool came to a close. Bought it with the money for one of my first paychecks. Such an unbelievably rough, raw and LOUD album. Then I heard months later that Dave Grohl the drummer dude with long hair actually had his own band, and I was like... WTF is this shit? Kurt dies and he forms another band? But then I actually listened to Everlong and let’s just say since then I loved Dave’s work and the Foo’s and ive got such a deeper appreciation for music now because of it
Zonum1 depends on my mood. Most days I will listen to Foo’s since they are more upbeat, and positive. Nirvana can be really depressing sometimes. I listen to them when I’m down and out. So it really depends. It’s genuinely hard to say because i value both bands equally. However on a enjoyment basis, i enjoy foo fighters more often, because I’m not a emo, angsty, depressed teenager anymore. I also don’t romanticize Cobain’s suicide anymore, and I can see him for the man he was. A troubled artist, who made some bad choices, but ultimately touched perhaps a billion people’s lives. Dave on the other hand is a hard working, down to earth musican who’s message and vibe is always about dealing with grief and then moving on from the pain. It’s a really hard question to answer. But hands down.... In Utero is my favorite album of all time. No any album any band puts out, it will never come close to beating that album.
I received a bootleg cassette of the demos about 6 months before the first album came out. I was still mourning Kurt and these recordings gave me a glimmer of hope that there would be a continuation of hard edged pop music.
I didn't hear this, but I remember my Mom driving me in the car listening to KROQ Los angeles, and the DJ made a special announcement that the music they were about the play was the first stuff released from any nirvana member since Kurt's death. I then heard the opening notes to "this is a call". It was awesome, but all the music on the radio in 1993/94/95 was awesome. All the music then had a weird, darkness about it. All I can say is that it fit the times. The times themselves were weird, and dark.
They have many great songs. And of all Foo Fighters songs, I’ll Stick Around is the best. This song kicks so much ass. It gives me that pain in my throat that you get when you are transported to earlier days when you hear it. It gets pretty tedious in the studio and when you play the same thing over and over it can drive you nuts. But that’s why these knuckleheads are still together. They compromise and sacrifice for each other. And they push forward through all the heartache. And with that, we get to hear some of the best rock n roll anyone will ever get to hear.
Best what? Best rock band? Maybe. Probably between them and Queens of the Stone Age as far as bands that are still around go. I'm partial to Ween, too. They aren't as active in the studio anymore as far as I know, though.

That's a great video, thanks for posting it. I find the claim that he could track a song in an hour hard to believe unless Barrett had everything mic'd and otherwise set-up and configured before DG arrived. It would have been great to know whether he used any kind of pre-recorded guide recording and/or a click track but it's not hard to do it without that stuff, drums first, if you know the song well. You usually do if you wrote it. I will say that first album's sound is relatively crude and uncommercial compared to later FF releases. That's not to say it's bad but it it has more room and less boom/bang/biff than the later stuff.
Yes, he could do a song in an hour because everything was set up and he was able to get everything in one take. Drums first and no clicks or guides, he just knew his songs. The first record was recorded in 5 days and it was only the second time I'd been in a "Big" 24 track studio. To compare, "The Color and The Shape" took 6-8 months to record, so yeah the first record would sound more raw.
@@laundryroomstudio Thanks for clarifying that and apologies for the implicit criticism of the first album's sound (I wasn't aware this was your channel - d'oh!). "Crude" was unfair and inaccurate although I meant it in a kinda 'punk rock' (whatever the f*ck that is) way. 'Raw' is a much more appropriate adjective. I've been using This is A Call as a reference track for a couple of mixes I've been doing recently and find the space/punch balance incredible on headphones. One is FF-adjacent while the other reflects my enthusiasm for 60s/70s baroque power pop and the early REM/Smiths escape hatch from yuppy hell. I'm mixing the remainder of the project myself - it's an exercise in the blind leading the crazy into the ultimate trial-and-error hellscape. But budgets... Thanks again! www.youtube.com/@filltheband
Yeah the rawness is what appeals to me the most, there's very little between the song and your ears to embellish on it or make it overly complicated which shows off the songwriting better for me.
Oaf Lodge Dave has gone overboard in trying to make FF records sound overly clean and slick. Nevermind, from his Nirvana days, was the inspiration, but Dave has taken it way too far.

@@laundryroomstudio cool. For the 8 tracks 1/2" the Tascam 48, 58 and TSR8s were better. But the 38 was the most common. I still have a couple of TSR8s up and running. They sound great i agree, but the transport was very cheap
Its a song to Courtney love and how he knows the truth and how it's going to be a great big giant mess when it eventually comes to light and how he has put up with her pawns or minions I like to call them in the music industry and he survived and how he had no hand in her plan and he dont owe her anything .... And after everything he will still be rocking because he will stick around long after she's gone
When what comes to light? His feud with Courtney is well documented, and they have grown up, made up, and moved on with their lives. Just read the lyrics, the song is about two, kind of three, things: 1. his feud over rights to Nirvana stuff. 2. Her career elevation tactics: 2A) The over-the-top grieving, something he didn't wish to do himself, and believed it was an act to gain sympathy and elevate her career. And 2B) His accusation that her association with Nirvana was simply to elevate her own career. There's another part of the song, that it he's sure they'd get over it in time - and as mentioned before, they did.
The songs about Courtney Love the dead soul of a woman and in the video had a disease ball floating around which was meant to be her.I was the first in my area to have this cassette before it came out and i still got it and listen to it in my truck cassette player today
@@alfredhitchcockpresents9318 Well yeah. Usually when people go through tough times like Dave in all of 1994, they'll usually try their best to forget it to make themselves feel better

WTF? Why would I be "trying to undermine the song" while promoting it on a radio station and talking about how great Dave is? what a stupid thing to say.
Joseph Atnip wow. I bet you had a lot of imaginary friends as a kid 😂
First two albums are awesome but not really feeling any past that personally
The songs about Courtney Love the dead soul of a woman and in the video had a disease ball floating around which was meant to be her.I was the first in my area to have this cassette before it came out and i still got it and listen to it in my truck cassette player today
This is 93...94?...wtf...really...in 94 you still were the drummer of Nirvana...remember that small band?
and wow... I mean.. .Is 1994!!! the year kurt died... maybe he sort of blocked in his mind that year?
@@alfredhitchcockpresents9318 Well yeah. Usually when people go through tough times like Dave in all of 1994, they'll usually try their best to forget it to make themselves feel better
What is the background music at the beginning of the video? specifically 0:38
Sorry, but I have no idea. It was something the radio station had
Laundry Room Studio damn. sounds absolutely killer though :/
does he ever get tired of the compliments?
I know what he meant when he said "that one is called Cymbal, zildjian cymbal" it's because most of the song Dave rode that crash... Still not a very nice thing to say, he was trying to undermine the song. not cool
WTF? Why would I be "trying to undermine the song" while promoting it on a radio station and talking about how great Dave is? what a stupid thing to say. Dave was the one who drawn a SYMBOL for the song title at the time, like Prince changed his name to a symbol, and I was just making a joke about the Zildjian thing, and could care less about him "riding the crash".
@@laundryroomstudio I didn't know it was you Barrett speaking, I thought it was the host of the show LOL... in that case I retract my statement.. Since you recorded and you are close to Dave, you can say that.. I thought it was the DJ who was saying that in a sarcastic way... My bad. lol
Song sounds the same
Gage23 is the same Song that appears on first album
Gage23 .....its a small world when coincidences appear..like when you see your sons name and jersey number ...
It is before it was mastered on the debut album.
Funny that he's still referred to as "Dave Grohl from Nirvana" buy this guy....Foo fughters is a way better band than Nirvana ever was by a mile.
This is terribly edited
