I swear these are the best tib bits of mixing and mastering ever. I no longer have to bug my more tenured producer friends lol. Cheers!

This channel seriously feels like one of the absolute heavyweights of music production on RUclips, possibly the whole Internet. A sub well worth.

to the comments saying they mix with a limiter on the master, thats not the way to hear how your mix actually sounds, its altering the behaviour of all sounds together and creating an illusion of cohesion, you are better off making it sound as great as possible without a limiter or really anything on the master channel, you can sub group stuff and put a limiter on that..... but putting one on your master is just crushing the dynamics and depth of your mix, its a bad practice IMO.

      I agree.
Especially when working on individual elements it might already be shaping sounds in a way which will no londer happen when more elements are added.

I produce with a limiter on my master. The way I do it though is by pulling all my buses down 12 db and putting my limiter up by 8 db. This helps me mainly in 4 ways
    1. It always leaves me ample and more headroom for the final mix and master and my produce session itself won't sound low
    2. I can actually see how loud my track is before I physically turn up my audio interface which allows me to produce at a consistent level. By this I mean sometimes the starting sample or vst by itself might sound really low which makes us physically turn up our speakers. But with the limiter on I would be more aware of it as my first intention would be to change the gain on the limiter than my speaker. By which i could turn up the actual sound or simply turn up the limiter
    3. It gives me a better way to control master output level to match reference tracks. I find it better to change the gain on a limiter than to change the master fader.
    4. And like you mentioned , the drop usually is louder in genres such as Melodic Dubstep which with the added limiter gives you a flavour of how it would sound after the mix
And since the whole track does not clip this way and waveform looks mastered when you render it , i am a real big fan of this. Good mental satisfaction 😇
And I love your content man ❤
Inspiring, educating and helping a lot of producers ✨
    Big hearts to you 🫶

this is not what he meants he meant as starting the mix loud with a limier set to like +4 or +6

Nice one! I don’t like touchings faders too and just use a limiter…

I think the better thing to do is just have your buss faders very quiet but actually turn up your monitor/headphone volume very high to make it sound like you're mixing at a normal level. And then when you do finish your production, you'll have all the headroom in the world to add as many plugins as you want for the mix. Or, in my case bc I mix while I produce, I do it all at the same time.

Mix into a clipper. If you start hearing shit go sideways you'll not have to guess about dynamics processor behavior, it'll be because you are pushing things too loud

@@MrSpencerMcIntoshin Ableton I use Saturator. Put the input volume up a few decibels and the output volume the same amount but down. Resample record that into another track to see the result on the soundwave, works amazing!

I personally like to have it on while mixing, doh I check after major moves that the limiter gets just to do the same amount of light work like before 👌

Once experimented, it’s much better to start top down with clipping and limiting from master to buses and then tweaking individual tracks ! But again, you really need to be understanding what you are hearing. Even if you have experience, sometimes you just gotta go the « starter » way !

There wasn't a single time I didn't have to go back and fix fundamental flaws in my mixes when mixing into a mixbus/limiter/other inserts. gives you a 8/10 "master" and a 6/10 mix at best. avoid.

I don’t do mixing at all, I just slap a SPAN and a stock limiter, and call it a day.

honestly mixing is kinda becoming a lost art bc everything gets compressed when you upload it somewhere, so it's kinda fair play when all anyone wants is "louder + brighter"
