First of all, I want to say thank you for making this video! I was one of those homeschool parents whom did not let their kids read HP. I just bought the first book last week. It’s sitting in my house and I still wasn’t sure what to do about it. Lol. I ordered Looking For God in HP and I will listen to the Literary Podcast. Also, I’m a new subscriber. 🥰
This was such a great video! I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I grew up in a "Harry Potter is a sin" household and am working through how I feel about potentially reading the books (I've seen the first movie and really enjoyed it).
Thank you so much for this video. That comment about the first book title change makes so much sense. I am looking forward to reading book one next month.
Great video! My parents were and still are very much against Harry Potter, and I do respect their viewpoint because I'm the same way now with my kids and anything that mentions witches or witchcraft, though I have had a few small conversations with them about why I see HP differently. And I think what's made it stand out to me as being different from other stories more recently is realizing I don't mind the idea of my kids reading or hearing the HP stories when they're older (they're 6 and 7 now), but I continually shy away from showing them things like the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks, because I see more connections to wiccan and occultic witchcraft in that movie, but I don't see it in HP. And Rowling also answered a question about whether or not Christians would attend Hogwarts, and her answer was that children of all religions attend Hogwarts, except wiccans because their "magic" and the magic in the HP world don't mesh at all. Looking forward to your videos in September!
I have loved Harry Potter since I was little. My parents knew that there was magic in the books but they knew that it was a work of fiction. They also new that the magic wasn't bad in the books. My mom read the first few books to my siblings and I when we were younger helped me fall in love with reading. Harry Potter has been my favorite series to this day and it's the only series that I reread every year. I don't think that I would be the reader that I am today without Harry Potter
Love your heart for the truth in all things, Chery! I'll be checking out all of the resources you shared in this video. Thank you! 💛Love your Hufflepuff hat! I'm a Hufflepuff as well. 😊
Thanks for sharing friend. I never watched Harry Potter until I was an adult and loved them so much. My Mom wouldn’t let us watch or read them as children. But I have read books 1-5 as an adult and haven’t finished. I enjoyed them though at the time. I’ve played the game Hogwarts Legacy and it was a bit too dark for me personally but I think the creators took it there when it didn’t need to be. I’m personally still working through my convictions with HP right now, not sure where I’m at, but Blake and I have enjoyed the movies and whatnot over the years. We did a HP advent calendar last year.
@@BookLoverAmanda I am not a huge fan of legacy either. I started playing it but haven’t finished it. I’ll share some more of the Christian symbols in my review videos in September.
This was so great! I'm really glad you shared all this! Its so helpful for me to actually know all the facts and references behind it now! Thanks for sharing! 😄
Love this video, Cheryl! 🥰 When the first HP book released in the US (September 1st, 1998, a little over a year after the UK release), I was 17 and living in a very rural tiny mountain town w/very limited access to the internet, where the nearest physical bookstore was at least an hour drive away. So I hadn't heard anything about Harry Potter until the first film came out in November 2001. I then acquired book #1 to read to my little brother, however there was a lot of death and hardships in my family around that time, and I can't recall whether I actually read the book then or not... Anyway, to make a long story short, my first intentional read of Harry Potter was in 2018 as an adult in my 30s, and I binged the whole series in 5 months w/a friend, and have been a HUGE fan ever since. 🥰 I read the series a second time 2020-2021 and have been wanting to reread it again since, so I'm SO happy about your September Back to Hogwarts Readathon, Cheryl! 🥰
I was one of "those" moms who forbade my kids to read the series. I'd been told it was about kids who went to school to learn how to be witches and wizards. Long story short, I finally read the first for myself. I was LIVID when I realized that the characters aren't even "human" by the same terms as the "muggles" are. They aren't calling on demonic power to do these "magical" things. They are born with that ability. and I'm 100% behind you on how it's all optional. ALL fiction is optional. But to dismiss them wholesale because I thought I knew what they were about. I agree that there are more Christian themes in this series than much of Christian fiction--especially middle-grade and YA CF.
