  • When Steve was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he decided almost immediately that he wasn't going to let it defeat him. An avid ballroom dancer, Steve already knew that ballroom dance was a great exercise he could do. But the doubt still lingered for Steve and for anyone who has been diagnosed in general:
Would he be able to keep up with a regular ballroom class? What if he couldn't do it? Would he have to lose his love of dancing forever?
When Rx Ballroom Dance opened at McCann Dance in Oceanside in 2022, a new location now meant Steve didn't have to doubt himself. The Rx Ballroom Dance program focuses on posture, balance, memory and social/emotional growth- all things Steve needed and wanted out of a program. But most importantly, ballroom dance gave Steve the joy that he already had for dancing, and a safe place to do it in.
Steve started the scholarship program and challenged himself to perform in front of an audience. He chose the music he wanted, the style he wanted, and the performer he wanted to be. He gained his confidence and stood tall. The program has transformed his physical and mental health and gave him his zeal for dance back.
The Rx Ballroom Dance program gave Steve an outlet, a purpose, and a tool for continued neurological improvement. With more than 500,000 people in the US diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, there are so many “Steves” out there who feel isolated and alone.
We are here to change that.
