I’ve recently had a THR and hadn’t considered anything like this. I’ve never been able to wear any earrings other than 925+ silver or gold. I’m currently making a list for my clinic visit in 2 weeks time. This is definitely going to be at the top. Thank you. Otherwise, I’m very pleased to say progress is going well. I’m walking easily and no pain!!! Stay hopeful if you’re on a waiting list. 🙏
Thanks for your comment. Most people are fine after joint replacement surgery even if they have reacted to jewellery. Many surgeons use titanium implants and they seldom if ever cause a reaction.
Thanks for this information. I sometimes get allergic rashes with a cheap watch or earrings so I shall certainly mention this to my surgeon before my surgery in October.
Happy to help. You should definitely mention it to your surgeon. It sounds as though you have contact dermatitis to probably nickel. It was commonly thought that skin reactions to metal were not predictive of implant reactions. I’m not convinced!
I can’t wear metal jewelry from chains, watches, even 22 k gold ring, skin got really hard and itchy ant turned a greenish color, I always avoid wearing metal now but my doctor says I need hip replacement and I think my body will react, any advice ?
It’s possible that you are sensitive to base metals like nickel and cobalt. Titanium implants are unlikely to cause reactions. I use them in people who have a history of metal allergies. Ask your surgeon for specific advice.
My hip replacement was almost 2 yrs ago and I still have swelling, pain and warm pink areas on my lower leg and thigh. The left leg hip is due to be replaced soon. I’m 83 and that leg is beginning to be painful. Any thoughts ?
I’d certainly mention it to your surgeon. I would want to know if there were a problem with first hip replacement before doing the other side. Most of the time it’s nothing to worry about.

Specsavers Lee! Your hip is not a problem. Titanium is very unlikely to cause a reaction.

How long does it take for the allergy to develop after hip replacement?
In my experience it’s anywhere between 2-4 years after surgery. It’s very unusual so sometimes it can take years to reach a diagnosis.
@@Lathamhipsurgery thanks for the important information. Will stay alert in future as I have undergone hip replacement last year.
