I could see it coming. Remember the first time the Vikings attacked Paris? Princess Gisla was was standing at the top of the wall staring at Rollo as their eyes made contact. I could see it was love at first sight. Gisla played hard to get, but you knew she was going to melt at some point. Got to say I'm a guy and I shed a few tears when they actually bonded.

@Elliott Woodhouse I am actually a direct descendant of "Rollo" or by his true name Gaange Rolf or Hrolfr, he was one of the greatest Norse Warriors of all time, what they don't show in the show is that he defeated the Franks many many times & he would not stop, thus is why the King's only option was to offer him the deal of a life time! And if you know Norse Culture, your legacy and your folk as we say mean everything, and he didn't just raise his own standing he brought all his people and warriors along with him and was the father of the Norman Empire, an empire that dominated all over for many centuries and was quite literally the father of the dukes of Normandy, as well as Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and so on! His legacy lives on today, including in my blood and soul! He was a true warrior and leader and he gave his folk/tribe/people a better life and future than they ever imagined! Btw "Gaange Rolf" means "the walker" because in actuality he was around 7ft tall close to 400lbs so he couldn't ride his horse he walked beside it! Ha Skål

Rollo sacrificed so much just for ragnar, he has sailed where ragnar told him, he fought who ragnar told him, he negotiated with whom ragnar told him, he spared whom ragnar told him, and what did ragnar do for him? he spared his life once because rollo choosed to surrender, even when he was winning. Ragnar never gave rollo anything even tho all he got was thanks to rollo. If ragnar would have been fair, half the land, half the songs, half the gold would have been of rollo. All a man can ask is what his heart demands, and Rollo's heart always demanded much more than Ragnar did but had.

Rollo wanted to be equal to Ragnar but he never was. Lagertha chose Ragnar over him. Ragnar tells Rollo that they are both equals, but he makes most of the decisions. and Ragnar becomes an Earl then later a King. When Rollo stays in Paris you can see his Christianity start to surface. he was baptized by a Christian priest. So really what sealed the deal for him was princess Gisla, he fell madly in love with her and vowed to defend Paris to the death. and that's what he does, he does not initiate slaughter and pillaging like Ragnar does. And even though I have not got this far later on he becomes a King. I just started season 4. I've got to say it's definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen on television, so well scripted, the costumes are awesome, the Viking boats are awesome, the special effects are stunning, and the Ireland backdrop shows the amazing country of Ireland at its finest.

Then slowly chips away to a vulnerable man, then the betrayal and lack of respect or I guess the greed and corrupt mind to better oneself.
It does a good job, but still I find Rollo to have been a really strong asset whos always been ignored and unappreciated .
I loved seeing him be crowed Caesar cause he finally got his recognition .

To me what makes Rollo a great character is that he is a character that is worthy to be interpreted as either someone you love or hate since there are reasons to. What also makes him great is that he is pragmatic and understood that living a life of only raiding place to place leaves you nowhere while Bjorn and Ragnar were constantly chasing for that place to settle but have never found peace with themselves since both of their personalities prefered the raiding lifestyle while Rollo has more or less found that place where he could be at peace. Both Bjorn and Ragnar died at the hands of their enemies never knowing peace while Rollo has found it. Both Bjorn and Ragnar are great characters in their own right but they were more like adventurers searching for something they cannot find which ultimately cost them their lives. Rollo and Ivar also are parallel opposites of each other in the sense that Rollo is being effective in ruling while Ivar is simply a sadist while trying to be a ruler and I am suprised that none of the characters have called him Ivar the terrible yet especially since Ivar went to Russia later in the series and then acts suprised that the rulers treat their subjects like trash when he has been doing that for several years.

Personally I think some of the main characters are meant to represent each country of Scandinavia. Ragnar is Denmark, Lagertha is Sweden, Rollo is Norway. Kjetill is Iceland & Greenland. Floki is supposed to be Norse religion, Athelstan the bridge between the two & of course the English monarchs are Christianity. Which would also make sense because Denmark (Ragnar) converted first, followed by Sweden (Lagertha) & then Norway (Rollo) was dragged kicking & screaming creating a mixture of acceptance & occasional conflict where the religion slowly spread across Norway before St Brice’s Day & then Olaf’s pagan genocide of non-Christians. Which is why Rollo & Floki are always fighting & why Rollo converted but was still wildly Norse & would occasionally switch back & forth. His fight with Floki is the last of the civil conflicts & Floki disappearing whilst Rollo became king shows the end of the Viking religion for the Norse. However, Floki is still alive in Iceland, Greenland & for a time Vinland which was where Norse religion stayed alive until the end of the Viking Age.
Kjetill is Iceland & Greenland both because he’s literally in charge of Greenland & has a large control of Iceland which is why he goes mad and everyone starts dying in really unclear ways except for the last minutes which the ending is pretty much all we really know of how Icelandic-Greenlandic Colonies died. Only Iceland would be resettled by Norse pagans & that’s why Icelandic is the closest to old Norse in the world. Greenland was resettled hundreds of years later.

@@db917 i do not mean disrespect to you too, but my common sense tells me that yes, rollo was jelaous of him and went against ragnar the first time, but he later admitted it with siggy and he repented his sin by protecting Ragnar's land and family from he same man he once allied himself. Did ragnar recognize it and reward him for it? Imo, for what i saw, he didn't (unlike charles) because ragnar gave him nothing and didn't even let him sacrifice Borg's man and then be fully reaccepted by their people.
"There's nothing that ragnar did that was as bad as what rollo did", i'm sorry, but i beg to disagree: Ragnar fully knew what happened in wessex; did he consequentely go to wessex and avenged these indeed poor people? No, he just killed the only survivor and went raiding Paris nevertheless, while as a king, he should have gone to fight ecbert, as the first duty of a sovereign is protecting his people.
Instead rollo had the Viking left behind in frankia with him got killed, because they openly refused him as their leader and thus his treaty with the emperor, which would have given them lands, and by doing that they signed their death warrant, since the Franks would have legittimately killed them all, for they professed openly their loyalty to ragnar, the man who has broken the deal with them and had intentions to raid them again; Rollo knew that he was in a very dangerous position and that he had only two options: either being fully by the franks' side, taking responsability of the rebel camp's annihilation and surviving or sticking with men who were not loyal to him and dying: he chose the first, and by doing that he stopped the franks from getting rid of him as well, and it was the first step to gain their, and most of all the emperor's, trust, .
And in the end, he fought against his brother, his family and their army of pillagers: maybe you'd say he did it for selfish reasons and I'd be agreeing with you, but i wonder: who is the real selfish one between them? Rollo, who is protecting what was legittimately his (as he did not steal anything from his brother this time) or Ragnar, the king who did not avenge his people and was trying to harm his brother's lands and family? I'm sorry, but i say Ragnar.
Please, do not get me wrong: i recognize that ragnar is an interesting and very well written character, but the enemy in the frank arc is indeed him. However i found both him and rollo two superbly written characters, and at the end the two brothers had their rightful share of fame and lands: Ragnar Norway, rollo normandy. I hope i wasn't disrespecting and rude: i wish you the best.

Rollo betrayed his people for the first time, the right punishement for that it's death. But Ragnar didn't have him killed, he prorected him when everyone claimed his death. At that point Rollo owed Ragnar, the way i see it Rollo paid that debt when he protected ragnar's family and land. Which was also Rollo's land so that's wat a normal person would do cz anyway he was gonna get killed too if they killed everyone...In paris saying that the people was not loyal to him I'd have to disagree. Ragnar was the king nd those people owed loyalty to Ragnar, not Rollo. Rollo killed them exactly cause he knew they were never going to agree to ally with the French nd fight their own people. Yes i agree Ragnar was selfish for not avenging his people in England.
