Speaking as a bodhran player, I can definitely hear him. He's in the mix with the others. The reason you don't think you can hear him is that (a) JJK is extremely good, so he's matching the guitar player perfectly and (b) the tipper isn't a traditional wood tipper, but a brush tipper, so the sound is different.
If your body doesnt naturally go into dance mode then youre not human. MM is so fluid and musical. He embodies the instrument and deep Irish culture so beautifully. Bravo!
Im from the states, have a degree in music - studied jazz. This is so crazy and i love it. Maybe some day i can sit in with some of this type of playing.
i had the pleasure of playing with mike and another piper john mc sherry at the weekend it was a fantastic experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life
As far as I can tell, Mike McG has got a serious pair of hands on the ends of his arms. I've got two useless apendages that aren't good for much more than excavating my nostrils. (And Mike can play so many instruments!)
Saw McGoldrick and John Doyle and Mccusker in the Delightful setting of the St Georges all in The 'Pool . The musical feast remains in my ears even yet . Mc Goldrick's playing was memorable.
I recorded this set of a radio program on a tape (yes a cassette tape, a looong time ago :). I don't remember how these tunes are called. Anyone knows it?
Yes Michael is a beast on the Uilleann pipes, Irish whistle and Irish flute. He is an Englishman by Irish parents, but we won't hold that against him. Uilleann means elbow in Irish BTW. JJ Kelly's bodhran is hard to hear, but that instrument is difficult to record properly especially on amateur gear which I think is the case here. No drones or regulators on this one!
Anaybody knows the names of the tunes in this set?? I'd like to know them, they're really good (the tunes and the band, of course, hahaha). Thank you veru much!!
Look at his left arm. The pipes are attached to the black bag. It inflates with air when he takes his elbow off of it, and deflates when he presses his elbow back onto it. That's where the air comes from.
Michael McGoldrick great musician seen him loads of times playing in da band Toss The Feathers in da Palace I’m Levenshulme Manchester back in da early mid nineties 👌👍
The guitarist is Ed Boyd and as others have pointed out, the bodhran is played by John Joe Kelly. They are three mates having a good time. Great to see and hear.
Actually Uilleann refers to the elbow in Irish. The Irish prefer to call their language Irish or Gaeilge. The Uilleann pipes consist of an air bag which is pumped up by the elbow, cantor, drones and regulators. The drones are self explanatory and the regulators are notes or chords played with the heel of the hand. It is a very complicated instrument. Since Mr. McGoldrick is left handed, he pumps up the air bag with his left elbow. He is not using the drones or regulators in this piece.
What is amazing is that McGoldrick, though at the absolute peak of the world's flute-players ( not saying he's the best, no such thing, but he's in the pantheon) is also a gun ( 'gun', that's Aussie for ' bloody good'. 'top class') piper. But .... I prefer him on flute. And yes Morning Rory is his best album I reckon.
Hehe! It was a cheeky question! :) They are great together. Although have a listen to El Garotin and Pipers of Roguery on the At First Light Album? Amazing.
@MisterBeaucoup, not really no. $1,000 bucks is pretty close to bottom line for a practice set. That won't even get you the drones or regulators. Though as you can tell from this video, you don't always need those.
How much can a beginner expect to pay for Uilleann pipes?? It's an instrument I'd love to learn, but the ones I've seen cost over a thousand dollars. Surely there is something cheaper for beginners??
i play fife. it only blends well with drums, and is even iffy when playing with other fifes. its also in the weirdest key ever (cant remember off the top of my head). you can get them in d, but its ridiculously small. its not very well suited to the irish playing style
My love of your pipes, , goes deep in my brain, & heart ...
Mike Mcgoldrick in full fling is utter brilliance
God damn right! Flawless performance makes me wanna take the pipes back up again
😮😮😮😮
Liam O'Flynn would be honoured to have met you all, for spreading the music of the uilleann pipes, Thank you
So together.....so timeless....Thankyou
3 mates, charging hard down the road to Tipperary. No worries, no fears, a plate of chips, and 4 more beers.
When you hear the uileann pipes you look at the ceiling and cry for joy ,tears run down your face
If your body doesnt naturally go into dance mode then youre not human. MM is so fluid and musical. He embodies the instrument and deep Irish culture so beautifully. Bravo!
I'm sittin' at me desk, but me feet are dancin' somewhere else.
Im from the states, have a degree in music - studied jazz. This is so crazy and i love it. Maybe some day i can sit in with some of this type of playing.
Go to Dublin, visit a music pub, order a Guiness and relax.
My God, that's life in a tune!!!
As someone mentioned earlier, this set is Jenny Picking Cockles/Earl's Chair, off McGoldrick's "Morning Rory" album.
11 years later. Thanks stranger. ❤
😢😢😢😢
The Pipes makes my heart fly!!!
Rock stars simple as that! Saw Mike in Bannow Church in Co. Wexford touring with Sharon Shannon big fan ever since then.
Is this particular gig available on Spotify ?
There’s a reason Mark Knopfler covets this guy, Mike is a phenom and a true class act.
What is the name of the first tune? I think the second is the earl's chair.
i had the pleasure of playing with mike and another piper john mc sherry at the weekend it was a fantastic experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life

As far as I can tell, Mike McG has got a serious pair of hands on the ends of his arms. I've got two useless apendages that aren't good for much more than excavating my nostrils.
(And Mike can play so many instruments!)
@DeiseSkelly It's two reels: Jenny Picking Cockles & The Earl's Chair.
DADGAD guitar. I adore Irish music.
0:46 Those two notes remind me of "Father and Son" by Knopfler. Would've been nice to hear it !
Saw McGoldrick and John Doyle and Mccusker in the Delightful setting of the St Georges all in The 'Pool . The musical feast remains in my ears even yet . Mc Goldrick's playing was memorable.
It's lovely, the whole thing! One of my favourite video clips - thank you!
Fabulous" always loved Michael playing, he's a true master and the 2 musicians are incredible 👏 well done lads - 10 out of 10 what a sound 👏
tiniest adjustment of the reed. Couldn't hear the need for it till I heard it. That's why we all love Michael.
are those left handed pipes?
I think they are by Dave Williams, who has passed away.
I recorded this set of a radio program on a tape (yes a cassette tape, a looong time ago :). I don't remember how these tunes are called. Anyone knows it?
I'd like to listen to some more up-tempo Uilleann pipe music like this. Any tips?
John McSherry, Aaron O’Hagan, Conor Lamb, Jarlath Henderson
*Thats John Joe Kelly on bodhran! Hes class! :)
He's English too.
Does anybody have guitar tabs(chords) for this brilliant piece of irish music? :)
makes the heart sing , there's no better instrument in the world :) and he knows how to play it , the other two aren't messing around either !
I'll bet the drummer could paint a room in minutes. Look at him go!
Hes very good. I saw him live in Feb 2020 in O'Connor's Doolin.

what's the name of the first tune? i would like learning it with my tin whistle! :)
Awesome, is that an orb at 4m 27s top of screen coming down?
Can't see anything
Kevin Cawley think it was a bit of fluff or something
Anaybody knows the names of the tunes in this set?? I'd like to know them, they're really good (the tunes and the band, of course, hahaha). Thank you veru much!!
I think the second is the earl's chair? Cant find the first.
He makes it look so easy...! ^^ Wish I could play like that :D
Got a name for this instrumental. "The Dance Of Freedom". !!!
I

All three guys on stage are bloody good! Playing together like this, it's just mesmirising!
Weltklasse... Ich liebe es

What a class act!

Who is this guiterist? I like him.
The guitarist is Ed Boyd and as others have pointed out, the bodhran is played by John Joe Kelly. They are three mates having a good time. Great to see and hear.
And what a play on the guitar by Boyd!! Wow and re-wow!
... God.... I fucking love Irish music!!!!!!!!!!
your not the only one !!!!
Thank you for your honest compliment ,from the heart ( ón croí )
anyone know the guitar chord riff he uses?
Our National Anthem should be "Mise Eire", or, "I am Ireland." By Turlough O'Carolan, composed in the late 17thc.,
Agreed I think it's time for the bitterness between Catholics and prodestants
To die out
Jenny Picking Coockles reel??
This is irish music :)

Yes "Uilleann" means "Elbow" in English.
"Uilleann" also means "Angle" in English.
Wan gebt ihr Konzerte und spielt doch mal ihn Bernkastel-Kues.. Mfg Stefan Bartz.. Klasse video
Do you mean a fife? not a flute?
Too bad the bodhran is missing :-)!! He gave it his best,,, -- great clip!! thx for uploading
I hope I can play uilleann pipes half that well some day. All of them were so skilled, bravo!
出だしがAfro Celt Sound Systemの”Lovers Of Light”にそっくりなんだけど、Afro…がパクッたんだろうか…?すごくよく知られたフレーズなのかも…かっこいいですねー

Hehe! It was a cheeky question! :)
They are great together.
Although have a listen to El Garotin and Pipers of Roguery on the At First Light Album?

@@raylawlor4887 I've actually learned the Pipers of Roguery, great tune with loads of crans!
Nice one! Love hearing the Uilleann pipes
John Joe!
You guys are so awesome, super well done!! Maxx
His niece is my teacher in scool
McGoldrick is a fast player, whether on the Flute or Pipes! Great stuff!
the bellows the player squeezes the bellows with his arms, hence the name uilleann which is irish for arm
"Uilleann" is the Irish word for "Elbow" & "Angle".
@DeiseSkelly jenny picking cockles/ the earl's chair. Awesome musicians!
Wow that man can play
left handed piper !
yeh the priests and teachers would'a forced him right handed not so long ago ( courtesy of T.Tiernan )
That should be try The Chieftains and Planxty, they're both awesome!
He's brilliant isn't he. Great set
YEEEEESSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yessir re bob !...This is the real thing !....the drive in one chord !!!
What a group! Perfectly syncopated.
@MisterBeaucoup, not really no. $1,000 bucks is pretty close to bottom line for a practice set. That won't even get you the drones or regulators. Though as you can tell from this video, you don't always need those.
poor bodhran player! does he know he got cut in the mix?
:O
If you’re smart and use your ears like you should when listening to music like this, you can here JJK on the bodhran perfectly clear.
Best Michael MCgoldrick album ???
Wow!
Spielt doch mal wieder für uns.... Die Musik ist ganz wunderbar
OMG Beautiful Brilliant Performance Guys Well done
