Last year I found myself debating between the Ultron 35/1.7 and Ultron 35/2. I ended up with the F/2 and I’m loving it! The performance of both of them seems very similar, the f/2 is ultra sharp at pretty much every setting on both digi and film, I went with the f/2 version for the 39mm filter thread.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Nah, not tried the Summilux, or an 35/1.4 yet for that matter. Don’t often find myself needing such fast glass. But I have serious gas for the Zeiss 35/1.4... looks to be a spectacular lens!
Thank you, Matt. I have the Zeiss Bigon 35mm F2.8 which is superb for street and architecture but really struggles in low light. For shooting in low light with HP5 or Cinestill 800T this lens looks like a perfect fit!
Matt your so right about how sharp this lens is wide open. I just developed three rolls of delta 100 in Perceptol at 1:1 dilution and I can already tell how sharp this lens is even before getting the negatives on my light table! Hey Greg, no problem! Yes I'm pretty sure it is second best to the Distagon for that "obvious" sharp look. I wish I'd kept mine now! (Sold when I got the smaller f2 version).
Loads of really useful information, Matt, and you’ve just put me off the fence! I’m not lucky enough to do model photography, so I can risk the super sharpness. The sunspots really attract me, and I’ve found a copy at a very good price, so thank I’ll order it tomorrow. Thank you for all your videos and your Flickr page. All extremely helpful and lovely photography.
Got the Brass lens // with the Brass hood from collector in Honk Kong. Piece of Art ...get it in Chromed Brass. Also mine came wrapped NEW ...Lovely , better than the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 M mount.
for me its allways a special feeling when i listen your reviews, cause that what you say and explane is ecactly this what your phtos say....... Thank you for this.......
I just bought a used brushed nickel chrome Ultron f1.7 LTM (screw mount) lens and am waiting for the LTM/LM adapter to show up so I can use it on my M240 or M262. My LTM Ultron says ASPHERICAL in red letters right on the front of the lens. It came with a matching metal screw on solid hood, a matching metal slip-on hood cap, and it takes 39mm filters. The hood has to be removed to add or remove a filter and the focus ring on my lens is also a more traditional style like the ones on the Nokton-Ms rather then the scalloped design on your Ultron-M. The smallest marking on the distance scale is 0.9 meters and the focus ring moves a little past that, probably 0.7 meters but definitely not 0.5 meters.
I've had this lens for a couple of years. I tried the Ultron and the Nokton 1.2 and went for the 1.7. Although, in my head, the Zeiss 50mm 1.5 is the lens I "love," the Ultron is the lens I find I have on my M most of the time. Would I prefer a smaller lens? Yes, but the Ultron is so good for low light street or available light indoor shooting I wouldn't swap it - unless I go for the 28mm. Like your test lens, mine has some movement in the aperture ring - but it is of no optical significance.
In his review of this lens, Phillip Reeve indicated that it has some vignetting "even stopped down to f/8, when used on the a7, shows a lot of field curvature, and colorshift on a7r.
Excellent video. Unfortunately I had the older M39 "Aspherical" version, which was the worst lens I ever owned. It was very soft wide open and easily outperformed by my Pentax-M 35/2 and Konica 40/1,8 at all f stops. Quite understandable that at Voigtlander, they decided to replace that Ultron with the improved new version of your review.
I Picked up the 1.7 aspheric with thread mount so I could do the 6-bit on the LTM adapter. noticed wide variance in the adapters from unit to unit.. several needed a bit of a shim to get the Voigtlander LTM lens to come exactly to top like it should... just a sliver of typing paper between lens and adapter brought them right into correct focus...wish V would put the 6-bit engravings on back of their lenses.
Hi Matt, another interesting and very informative video!! I recently bought my first Leica, the M10M and my first lens is the Ultron 35m f/2. Do give it a try...I plan to see if I can rent the 1.7 you reviewed. I'd be interested to see your comparison of these too. I"m REALLY excited about the coming Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 50mm f/2 Aspherical VM....I have that on pre-order. I"ll be interested to see your take on this new lens too! Happy New Year....!! CC
Completely different, the 35/40/50 1.2 are similar, Ultron is different optical design to Nokton. It reminds me a bit of a Zeiss Planar in terms of just fine detail and sharp. 1.2 soft glowy wide open
I have the old ltm version and it's a bit soft and hazy but not loose. I have ttartisans 35 f1.4 on the way to replace it. I'm not complaining though, it has a 'character'
I have this 35mm 1.7 Ultron VM, but I missed having the focusing tab and hard stop at 0.7m. So I also got the TTArtisan 35mm 1.4. Without doing a pixel-peeping comparison, I would say the TTArtisan is pretty sharp, and sharp enough even in comparison to this 35mm 1.7. The VM is probably sharper, but not enough for me to worry about. And I think the TTArtisan's bokeh is even smoother than the Ultron, even though the latter is known for it. I think the TTArtisan also has slightly less contrast and vignettes less, which I prefer.
Great review Matt as always! I’m just about to receive delivery of the ttartisans 35mm f1.4 L mount so good to see some peeps happy with it! For £62 new I’m happy to take the chance this will me a little softer than the voigtlander for a lot less money. It’s interesting the 7Artisans 55mm L mount vs the 75mm 7Artisans m mount on the CL: the L mount lenses will not allow magnification only peaking where as the m mount lenses on the Leica adapter will allow magnification . Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks Ken, yes it sounds like the TTA 35mm is also a good one. That is crazy cheap! re. adapters no it's annoying.. if not using the Leica M adapter I found I can't zoom to focus. Other lenses and adapters don't seem to work.

@@GrainyByNature yes agreed! Hopefully I can test the f2 this year. Sound like the perfect size, weight, lower price and fast enough aperture for most situations.
Nice video! I'm pretty sure that these Voigtländer 35mm Lenses are great performers, but it would be really interesting how they compare to Leica 35mm Lenses. But I know that 35mm Leica Lenses are crazy expensive. I own the 35mm Summilux M ASPH FLE and I would say that this lens performs in the same way as the Summilux M 50 ASPH wide open. I have seen in other videos here that the flares are much more under control with Leica lenses, but these flares can also be a creative element.
Hi Matt isn't that the video you were referring to? In the meantime there are many 35s from Voigtländer that are also very close in terms of speed - 1.2/1.4/1.5/1.7/2.0 - have you ever compared them all to see which one is really the sharpest of them all?😁 Lg Anderl

Another fantastic voigtlander 35 lens is the relatively new f2 aspherical. It’s an amazingly sharp lens and renders well on my Leica Mono and M10. I had an older Leica 35 Summicron that I sold after getting this lens. I’d let you borrow mine but I’m in the states 😀 Nice video - thanks
@@davidpuglia4813 excellent thanks, Voigtlander are making some amazing lenses right now! ..if you like small I have another tiny Voigtlander to come, in addition to the lens mentioned that would follow in this video. I’m exited to try it!
I have the same and its amazing. The microcontrast and 3D-ness is curious and have never see by another lenses. That for a bit of the price of Leica Summicron/lux
Hey, Matt. Did you ever pick up the F2 Ultron? I just grabbed the Nokton 35mm f/1.4 II MC and am really disappointed with the barrel distortion. So I'm going through all of your 35mm videos now to see what other options there are for small, great m-mount 35's. Thanks for all the videos!
Hi sorry to hear. I bought the 1.7 after making the video as it ‘beat’ all my other 35s. I still need to try the f2. Sorry lockdown has delayed a lot of testing.
I have the (heavy!) silver version which I love, optically, but dislike the handling of - the focusing ring is hard on the fingers and too close to the body, and the black on silver markings are rather indistinct. I don't find it quite as clinical as the Summicron-ASPH (1st version) but it's certainly super-sharp. My goto 35mm remains the Single Coated Nokton-Classic f1.4, usually on an M9, not a combo optimised fr sharpness!
hello matt , coming back to this video : I am conidering to buy either this Ultron 1.7 VM lens used ( at 480 Euro )or a new Nokton Vintage F:1.5 Asph in Silver ( Type II) at 1000 Euro ? I am not a professionnal , just doing photo when vacations landscapes , cityscapes .. what do you recommend using with digital Leica ? I can not afford leca lens prices . thanks daniel
Even though i have the Ultron 35/1.7 in LTM I bought the 7artisans 35mmf2 in M mount (second hand). Just to give it a go. I'm shooting on digital btw... Surprisingly the Ultron (in LTM) is still a better performer than the 7Artisans 35/2. Center sharpness is equal but edges+corners are way more even on the Voigt. The chineese flares too easily and chromatic aberations too present. The bokeh looks nice though, looks like bubbles "exploding". I would therefore *not* recommend you to try the 7artisans 35/2 for color or digital work.
Hi great name! You have good taste ha.. thanks for this info.. i've never been tempted but the 7A lenses but really happy to hear the Voigt won. :) I value the classics :) Many thanks!
hi Matt, very interesting video, for portrait with a Leica MP do you recommend which one? the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 2/35 asph. VM or the Voigtlander Nokton 1,2/35 . VM or Voigtlander 35mm 1.7 Ultron M ? or a 50mm?
Hi Phil thanks, I can't tell you 35 vs 50 as it depends how you see the world but for 35mm the 1.2 is easily the best of those. APO is too sharp for most faces and even the 1.7 is borderline. See my f2 Ultron video. I use that if I dont need the 1.2 aperture.
thanks a lot for this great videos, try the ultron 35mm f2, super small, is not so clinical sharp, has the perfect balance, only vignetting and bokeh could be better
I just picked up the Ultron f2 Mark II and the vignetting caught me off guard (quite a bit more than I was expecting). Picking up an Ultron 1.7 tomorrow to compare with & wanted to check out this video again beforehand. Thanks, Matt!
@@moot6794 thanks, I understand the 1.7 is sharper too but I can’t confirm yet. There is also the APO! A well controlled lens, very sharp. Currently testing, video will come.

Great review as always! Slightly of topic question, (but you are Mr.Leica, and a portrait shooter, so..) : Have you ever tried the Summilux-R 80mm? I have only read about it, but I can't get it out of my head :) Guess it's bigger than you would like, but there is hm.. something about it :) Not much to find on youtube about it (or most R lenses).
Thank! No I’ve still not shot any R glass. If I get the opportunity one day I’ll be sure to share it! (You can but and resell if you don’t like it?) ..if means you can sleep again! That’s how I work haha
Sorry to bother you, but compared to the 2.0/35mm, apart from being longer, how does the 1.7/35 Voigtlander Ultron fare?. I would eventually like to use this 1.7, on a Leica SL2s. Awaiting your reply. Cordially.
I have the Leica m10-p and I’m very interested in this lens because of the wide open sharpness and the Matt finish and the white lettering matches the camera as well. But I know the downfall is the focus ring is it possible to add to focus tab on there ?
Hi, yes it's so good wide open in low light. Sadly I've never seen anyone put a focus ring on this. (You could get the smaller 35mm f2 Ultron which does have a tab). I have that now.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom i have the leica m10-p and i wanted something to match the matt finish and white writing i saw another youtuber with the same set up. i gave it a shot got it for $500 at MPB i will try it out i feel like theres mix reviews about the focus ring some people love it some people hate it and some people dont mind

Correct Michal! Good spotting of Gdansk! No I visit 3 city many times, Bydgoszcz some, Kwidzyn some but I need to get out and see more of Poland. Once Covid is finished I will try and Warsaw is high up on my list as I have model contacts there.
Matt, in your experience, what is a better lens for Film Photography in term of sharpness and overall performance, the Nokton 35mm f1.4 or the Color Scopar 35mm f2.5, I don't mind f2.5 aperture. I am having a hard time deciding in between them. I will mainly use it on my Leica M4
I would go with the 35f1.4 single coated (sc) if you’re shooting BnW film. Or the multi coated version if you’re shooting colour film or intend to also use it on digital. The skopar version is great for both and is smaller than the noktons.
hello Matt I did not understand if you recommend it more for analogue or digital photography. but because my english is a bit poor. can you make me understand better? I have an m4-p and i need an 35mm economic. thank you
Hi Giemme, yes no problem. The lens is very sharp so I think very good for film. It can look too sharp for portraits on digital sensor but film is softer. Hope that makes sense.
I think it is still a good performer but more normal that record breaking as I read. I've not had the chance to try one yet. Yours is smaller than the VM.
I delayed testing of some of the new Voigtlander lenses due to UK lockdown but I will share reviews as soon as I do them. Yes some amazing lenses on the way! :)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom there is no finder blockage as well - unless you use the lens hood that is not included 😀
@@davidpuglia4813 excellent thanks, Voigtlander are making some amazing lenses right now! ..if you like small I have another tiny Voigtlander to come, in addition to the lens mentioned that would follow in this video. I’m exited to try it!
hello Matt , thanks for the reply . Do you mean the Ultron Vintage line 35mm F/2 aspherical ( type I / type II ) ?
Yes that's the one I got (either type is fine)
I have the same and its amazing.
The microcontrast and 3D-ness is curious and have never see by another lenses.
That for a bit of the price of Leica Summicron/lux
Thanks Thom! Agreed, love this lens! See the linked blog post for many example photos.
I’ll review the 28mm Ultron when I get chance. I’m just trying to shoot more samples images with it.
Sorry lockdown has delayed a lot of testing.
as usual very good review and video ! thanks Matt . Daniel
Thanks Daniel!
Thanks for confirming verses the Summilux. Yes the less perfect little Nokton still has its place! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom, it's the Summicron I have, a bit smaller for my pocket, in more ways than one, than the Summilux!
@@AlistairMurray haha yes I like small and ‘more affordable’? Too :)
hello matt , coming back to this video : I am conidering to buy either this Ultron 1.7 VM lens used ( at 480 Euro )or a new Nokton Vintage F:1.5 Asph in Silver ( Type II) at 1000 Euro ? I am not a professionnal , just doing photo when vacations landscapes , cityscapes .. what do you recommend using with digital Leica ? I can not afford leca lens prices . thanks daniel
100% 1.7 or the f2. I bought the f2 and sold my 1.7 just for the size. The 1.5 is lovely but not sharp enough
Thanks Andreas! The f2 sounds maybe closer to a Summicron then, I will still try to test one at some point for completeness.
Another great video Matt
Thank you Rafael! I'm trying :)
Great Video and channel! Have you planned a Video on the nokton 50mm f1,5 ||? I'm interested in that lens and there is Not much to find about it
Thanks hopefully I can get a copy to test yes. Give me a few months and hopefully!
Great Review!
What about Micro Contrasts? Can it hold up with the Summilux Asph. ? Would be awesome to make a comparison between those!
Thanks Bene, ye sI will have to compare them.. I just bought the Ultron I was that impressed so once lockdown lifts I can do some proper testing.
Great review! How does this compare to the APO-Lanthar? I'm confused between the two of which one to get.
Check out the Ultron f2 video I did and APO vid. This is 3rd best. Setup a Zoom call with me via MrLeica.com/Zoom if you want to go through the various options.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks so much for the offer! Will take you up on that soon.
What do you think of the Voigtlander Ultron 2.0/35mm?. I plan to use it with my Leica SL2S.
Hi Chris. I love it and own it. See that video.

I`m stopping watching your videos! I still haven`t received my CL and already bought a VOIGTLÄNDER ULTRON 35MM F/1.7 in silver (new but now is discontinued ), a Voigtlander Heliar 50mm f/3.5 ( new ) and a LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 75MM F2 ASPH (used but in pristine condition). Now I`m done, what do you think ?
Yes Carlos stopping watching, you will have to sell your house soon! Haha! All excellent lenses and I didn’t even tell you about the Heliar yet! That is one seriously sharp trio of lenses!!

Hey, great comparison. Was wondering how this version compares to the newer 35mm f2 vm ultron? Have you ever tested that lens?
Thanks I’ve not tested the f2 yet but hopefully I will get an opportunity if Voigtlander like this video.
Hey matt..you make my head spin...listen body I need a lens for my fuji x series cameras..21 m equivalent in 35m sharp compact no distortion..also tell me where I can order it from in Britain shipping to latvia..thanks body
Hi Kaveh, this is the wrong video for you then, look at the 15mm Voigtlander video. With Fuji crop that will give you closer to what you want. Buy on eBay for ease (can buy new on eBay).
I have the LTM. A nice lens. I think I have reached my lens limit.
Haha never! This is better optically than LTM* :)
Great review! Do you have any though on the latest 50mm 1.5 Nokton ash ii ?
Thanks John, Hopefully I might get the opportunity to test it this year. Fingers crossed!
I have a Voigtlander Vitomatic IIa with an Ultron 2/50 lens.
Ah nice yes I know the Ultron design was used on older cameras
Which 35mm if u choose one between Voigtlander 35 f1.7 and new 7artisans 35 f2 ii?
35mm f2 Ultron or LLL 35mm f2 8-Element. (I replaced 1.7 with the newer f2*)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for sharing. 1.7 is too sharp and detailed, that’s the common problem for pretty and smooth skin😂
I recognize Gdańsk in your photos. Any other cities you've visited? Regards from Wrocław in Poland!
Correct Michal! Good spotting of Gdansk! No I visit 3 city many times, Bydgoszcz some, Kwidzyn some but I need to get out and see more of Poland. Once Covid is finished I will try and Warsaw is high up on my list as I have model contacts there.
Voigtländer VM lenses are better than Leica equivalents. A few really stand out...50mm 1.2, 21mm 1.4.
Thanks William, yes I do really enjoy Voigtlander lenses.
Both of the mentioned lenses have a version II
I would go with the 35f1.4 single coated (sc) if you’re shooting BnW film. Or the multi coated version if you’re shooting colour film or intend to also use it on digital. The skopar version is great for both and is smaller than the noktons.
@@ofeykalakar1 thanks for answering 👍🏻
@@Guairenito in bright conditions I use my Skopar for the ultimate compact walkabout setup, Nokton to shoot wide open for low light.
hi, Matt great video! for the l39 verison 35mm 1.7, is it able to use the LH2 lens hood ? thanks
Hi I’m not sure. You might need to Google it and see if mentioned on a forum.
Is it possible to compare this Ultron 35mm 1.7 to the Leica 11663?
If I get the opportunity to compare to Leica I will try
hello Matt I did not understand if you recommend it more for analogue or digital photography. but because my english is a bit poor. can you make me understand better? I have an m4-p and i need an 35mm economic. thank you
Hi Giemme, yes no problem. The lens is very sharp so I think very good for film. It can look too sharp for portraits on digital sensor but film is softer. Hope that makes sense.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ty i prefer the Voigtlander 35mm f2 asph version II thank you for your videos!!! Very interesting
@@Stesalti Yes the f2 is smaller so I think the best choice. Thanks for kind words!
What kind your kamera & lense in this video man
I record the videos with Lumix S5 now (in the past GH5)
There is a LTM version of this lens. How does it compare?
Yes as I show in the video but as I say I’ve not used it. As mentioned I think softer and often haze
I wonder where are all the Voigtlander VM lens made nowadays..
The same factory as the Zeiss lenses. :)
Am i missing anything much? I have the ltm version.
I think it is still a good performer but more normal that record breaking as I read. I've not had the chance to try one yet. Yours is smaller than the VM.
I would say avoid if you are getting an M-10R - there is vignetting across the range with this lens
Thank you Robbie, sorry to hear. I tend to use more older film bodies but good to know for others reading, thanks.
And now just to throw off everyone the APO is coming.. I'm going to order the APO.
I delayed testing of some of the new Voigtlander lenses due to UK lockdown but I will share reviews as soon as I do them. Yes some amazing lenses on the way! :)

Yes LTM = screw mount so the same as Canon cameras, P/ 7 etc.. and Bessa L, R and others.
