  • French harpist Sylvain Blassel plays his transcription of the very famous guitar piece "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" of Francesco Tarrega, with his 5th finger, without enharmonics, just repeated notes on the same string, on his Erat harp of 1830.

    I’m coming to this party a bit late, but I hope other people are also stumbling across it in 2020. What a beautiful version! I love seeing Blassel push the envelope on harp performance.

    impressive technique. This is incredibly hard on guitar, can't imagine how much harder it is on to achieve such an even tremolo on the harp...

    The harp here proves much superior than the guitar, this is BY FAR one of the best interpretations of Recuerdos de la Alhambra- BRAVO!

      Just to be the dissenting vote... I prefer classical guitar to harp. But as sound is subjective, I'll bow to your preference for the harp version. : )

      i'm a huge fan of harp and i play piano and guitar but it's safe to say the guitar version which is the original is the best one the harp version is still amazing tho

Super!!!

    This isn't my favourite piece in the world, but I am so blown away by the technical achievement here that I can't quit listening/watching. Well done, M. Blassel. You inspire me.

    This video is the first one of a series, none of which being originally written for the harp. There will only be adaptations & transcriptions. It is true that we could have recorded pieces from Naderman, Bochsa, Hasselmans, Renié or other composers very well performed by many harpists but we have decided to go a bit out of the way. You will therefore shortly hear composers such as Liszt, Weiss or Narvaez…

    Wow! Just stumbled across this and was amazed to see it being performed on harp rather than guitar, and what a wonderful performance it is, (comparable to the best versions that I've heard by virtuoso guitarists), so beautifully played that I just enjoyed it right through even though I wasn't looking for harp music.

    I'm fascinated by this video for many reasons. Beautiful music,wonderful harpist and the way he plays this piece and the beautiful antique harp. I've never used my pinky finger when I play harp but here he is using his pinky finger for this piece. It's unusual but very very interesting to see it.

    The “dubious transcriptions” intrigued me… I then went back through the original work and realized that all the notes where played, that the music had not been modified as you can hear in other videos of this piece using arpeggios for example in order to simplify it and that the tone is as indicated in the original work.

    Many performances are done one octave higher to make it sound more like a “mandolin” which is not the case her as we stay in the guitar repertoire. It is correct in that case that we should rather qualify this interpretation as adaptation instead of transcription.

    About the harp, it is true that it is small, puts the harpist in an uncomfortable and insightful position but we considered that the sound was worth it and decided to accept the visual defaults, the music being more important.

    Concerning Sylvain Blassel’s qualities, I think they are already well known. One only needs to check the work he has done on Bach 14 canons, consult his numerous transcriptions or to listen to his recording of the Goldberg Variations (recorded under Warner / Lontano; Urtext Editions) that has convinced many people around the world.

    This is lovely -- it's interesting that he's using his pinky, but I'm not sure why he's using it. It seems that his 4th wound have been fine for most of it.
    It's really gorgeous though, either way.

    I'm not sure I don't prefer this transcription to the original (that is, I think I do prefer this transcription to the original). I like how the accompaniment arpeggio notes are more sustained and more mellow.

    I'd love it if you would address the use of your 5th finger (pinky in the USA.) The piece is sublime. Do you use it all the time? Were you taught to use it and if yes, who was your teacher? Which school of teaching, ie: Salzedo, etc? I've only been studying a year, and yes, there are times I think the pinky would work better, but I'm being taught that it is not to be used. Obvioulsy, you are well schooled, so I'd love your insight.

    zzindorf: Seems to me that your comments are from someone who looks, judges, but maybe isn't actually listening. I couldn't care less whether the instrument is "too small". Nor do I care that this is slower than "normal". It works, is musical and speaks. That is all that matters.

  • @nonenoneonenonenone
    @nonenoneonenonenone 13 лет назад

    What changes did you make to your edition? Guitar music does not transcribe well to the harp because it lays in such a low register. I tried a transcription of Rodrigo's Zarabanda Lejana, and it is too low as played on the guitar (in a transcription, no doubt). Better to raise a piece about a fifth than an octave. Ibert's Entr'acte is a little too high an octave higher, but can be played lower as in the original for guitar.
    I do not think the Bach Goldberg Variations work at all on the harp.

  • @nonenoneonenonenone
    @nonenoneonenonenone 13 лет назад

    I think he is possibly the most misguided young soloist around. He is playing on a harp much too small for him, albeit a beautiful-sounding antique, he is playing only non-harpistic music and very slowly, it seems. I would like to see him performing on a modern, full-size harp with full-size sound in harp literature. There is much harp literature to perform without dubious transcriptions. Transcription is an art to be studied.

  • @nonenoneonenonenone
    @nonenoneonenonenone 13 лет назад

    If you have to reduce the tempo by half to play a piece, it should not be on the harp. There is enough Bach that works well to not have to stretch to what is unclear, muddy, or graceless. It is very difficult to choose what to transcribe. 60% of Bach's Italian Concerto plays well, or sort of, on the harp, but the other 40% ruins it.
    Nancy Allen played Recuerdos very movingly in a recital long ago, using just thumb and 2d finger, not fast, but expressively. That was a feat.
