hey girl! congrats on leaving for basic so soon. I just graduated basic on July 1st, I shipped on May 10th. A few things: you will go to the BX within the first three days of you being there -it's mandatory for your MTI's to let you go! I would definitely recommend packing lighter, everything is sold there and you'll be able to buy full sized items. Another thing, you are required to wear your blues all graduation weekend, no civilian clothes at all until you ship to your tech school (unless you're staying at Lackland or Ft. Sam). But thats the biggest thing I wish I did differently - I really wish I packed less than I did. You really don't need much at all to get you through the first 2-3 days. yes! any color/shape/type of sports bra is perfectly fine. they do have coconut oil lotion at the BX and nope, everything is cheaper than normal from what I remember.

I've been to basic, while I'm not a girl I can say that we went to the BX on the second day. And honestly the only thing we needed was money. They specify what shampoo you can use, what undewear you get, toothpaste and the types of toothbrushes. I think the only thing I had that was mine from home was my razor to shave with. Being prepared is good, but be ready for them to tell you can't use that. One thing to keep in mind is when you are ready to leave basic, you are going to have ALOT of stuff and minimal space to pack everything. You can't bring the mouth wash, I think nothing with alcohol in it all which is why your deodorant might be a problem too. I really think you should bring stick deodorant.

Hello Kristen, I am currently in the process of enlisting myself. I am 24, with about a year's worth of college under my belt. However, I can't do a push up to save my life. I don't know what to do to get fit... I'm almost considered underweight because I am at the minimum weight of my height class. First you will take the ASVAB to see what kinds of jobs you qualify for, then you and your recruiter will meet and talk about your scores and options. Then you will pick 10 jobs from a list of the ones you qualified for and 2 aptitude areas. There is a possibility that none of the 10 jobs you pick are available at the time so you can choose to go with one of the aptitude areas and then while you are at basic you will have the opportunity to pick a job (this is what most recruiters recommend you do because you have a higher chance of getting the job you want) OR I believe that you have the opportunity to stick with choosing a job rather than going with an aptitude area, you just won't leave for basic until after you get assigned a job. Actually depends on the squadron and squadron commander. We were authorized to wear civilian clothes Saturday of graduation weekend in town pass. That was a year ago but it could still be the same. Like I said depends on the commander
CVS has the best toothbrush case. It is not the flimsy plastic kind. It is solid and comes in many different colors. It's a little bit hard to find in their store, usually it's located in the the travel toiletries section. It has a coordinating soap case too! but who uses bar soap nowadays? lol I'm so happy with the design of the toothbrush case. edit: you won't believe how affordable it is.
Eden Rhodes I'm 17 going to be joining next year. What I really recommend is focusing on asvab section and working out making sure you eat healthy and really focus on physically fitness. Also I recommend karate or boxing because that'll really help you pass with flying colors. Also make sure you're in the best fit when you're getting ready for the BMT training. Try waking up 5:30am every morning to get into the habit before the bmt training begins. Good luck girls!

Wow! Basic has changed a lot since I went through Army Basic in 1989. Not very "basic" now. Soap, shower shoes, and toothpaste plus brush was about all I needed. The rest, Uncle Sam issued.
Jus' Nuts yeah now you're forced to buy everything yourself, for pretty much any branch. If you don't have what you need, you're given a card with money on it that comes out of your first pay, and you have to use that to buy whatever you don't have. It's best to just have everything now. My husband isn't air force, he's marines, and even he had to buy a bunch of stuff, and before he could leave after graduation, he had to go and drop almost all of the money he made, to pay for everything they do for you there.
That's a damn shame! I bitched about buying extra BDU's at my permanent post (which I learned later nothing is permanent in the Army!). I paid $150 bucks in Germany for Matterhorn boots, so I could keep my dogs warm in the field in December. Money well spent. After I ETS'ed, I gave those boots to my Marine brother (we wore the same size 9, just like every other MF). He wore them for years while deer hunting. It was warm enough for me to wear my 'cruit boots. But... Times have changed. And I feel that's not for the better!
Just a heads up, your MTI will give you a shake down on your first night and inspect everything you brought. He/ She is gonna give you shit for bringing so much stuff. You're gonna go to the BX multiple times, and your wall lockers can't hold tons of personal items. I would recommend not packing so much.
My recruiter gave me a list of things to bring and told me that women usually have to bring more things than men. Hair things take up a lot of room but is a necessity since my hair is more blond than brown, which they do not have blond hair ties and pins at the BX (I've been told by many people). And honestly it's not that many things, it all fits into my pretty small bookbag so I should be good to go. Thank you though for the heads up, I appreciate it!

I am going in open general so I won't find out my job until basic training, sadly. I know medical jobs can be hard to get but definitely not impossible. I had a friend go in open general and is now a nurse in the Air Force!
