Many people forget that HTC and Apple have a design share agreement so they're able to do this kind of thing without any repercussions. You guys evens stated this in a recent Pocketnow Weekly too.
+Peter Blanco That agreement specifically excludes "coverage for any products that are defined as cloning an Apple product. (An arbitration process is outlined should Apple feel that HTC has released a 'cloned' product.)" (Source: allthingsd.com/20121205/heres-apples-settlement-pact-with-htc-well-the-parts-were-allowed-to-see/) So we'll see what happens, if anything. ^M
Pocketnow Interesting, thanks for the extra info. I'm honestly curious to see how the market reacts to the A9. People generally agree the iPhone has a very nice design, so why not port it?
If you're looking for more details (and a whole lot more photos) check out our hands-on writeup over at Pocketnow: pocketnow.com/2015/10/20/htc-one-a9-hands-on ^M
+Pocketnow if it is ok on your side, you guys should emphasize it more (first part of your video after the intro) so that most uneducated or ignorant people would know that htc did it first than apple.
They could have removed the Htc logo on the front instead of the speaker or like put the fingerprint sensor somewhere else... but no! "Let's remove something that made our phones stand out!"
+Ben Holmes design, it runs Android 6.0, quick charge 3.0, finger print scanner, sense ui, blink feed. because it's a mid tier phone pricing should be reasonable
But this phone introduces NOTHING unique for HTC. In fact, the A9 is ridiculously derivative. With their quarter sales dropping time and again, this design definitely not the right direction to go in to bring attention back to a dying company.
We've had the One A9 for a little under two weeks as of today, folks, so it's time for the full review! Check it out here: pocketnow.com/2015/10/27/htc-one-a9-review ^M
+Miika Mäentaus One thing I don't get is why doesn't it have both? Does the scanner just MUST be on the front? Sony and Huawei put them on the side and back respectively. Heck even now the front position of a fingerprint scanner seems awkward... Just do like Google and have stereo speakers on the front and a scanner on the back... it makes perfect sense...
+MrBlitz Exactly. What I don't get is.. why don't you replace the big 'HTC" logo on the front? There could have easily been a speaker in that place. Or (if you, as manufacturer, insist on showing your brand) combine the fingerprint button with your logo.. That's shouldn't be so hard should it?
Don Heuvelman Not really the drivers won't fit... that is if you want that big BOOMsound stero speakers from the M9. What they shouuld've done is taken BOTH the HTC logo on the front with the fingerprint scanner, put a big old speaker driver in there since it has such huge bezels anyway, put the same driver in place of the earpiece like they did with the M9 and just put a circle/dimple on the back that scans your finger and call it a day. I get they're trying to reclaim a design they started in 2013 and shove it in the faces of all those iPhone owners... but why not take your design and improve on it??
I will wait for the full review but the battery size sight unseen seems ridiculously small. HTC always does a great phone and screws it on one component so bad I wouldn't even dream of buying it. m7 - battery m8 - camera m9 - cpu and camera better to get solid 8.5 on all aspects than seven 9s and two 4s.
it was the one, single thing that pretty much 100% of people agreed was one of the best things about HTC, and they ditched it. Not only did they ditch it, they did not have to. why not just put the scanner on the back? this is pretty much suicide for their sales.
+Sub Ripper or just skip the fingerprint scanner altogether, if that meant they'd have more room for battery too? totally agree though, i think it's safe to say that this is the end.
+rudeboycg Yes, you could say that about Samsung etc. But that specific camera bump and circular dual flash are trademarks of the iPhone 6. There's no going around it. People can argue all day that the M7 inspired the iPhone 6, but the iPhone 6 directly inspired the A9. Besides I'm okay with HTC going this b/c they have a patent sharing agreement with Apple and it looks fine.
+Micheal Cuntdrey screw you Samsung is the second riches in its mobile company, and the biggest chip manufacturer in the world behind intell, also 98 percent of amoled screens are dominated by Samsung, note 4 was the best phone ever, note 5 is okay i guess
+Micheal Cuntdrey Samsung is not going anywhere anytime soon. They may release bad phones, but they are the chip supplier for the unfathomabley successful iPhone 6/6S. that's where they get most of their profit.
because a battery size dictates how long it would last on the owner's usage. and it's freaking 2015 yet they still have that low mAh. for screen sizes with at least 5", 3xxx mah should have been the norm these days
+Dave Dean (Trouserdeagle) Keep in mind the phone has a snapdragon 617, so it's a lot more power efficient than other phones of its class. Not to mention it runs marshmallow, which increases battery life significantly allowing the small battery to keep up with other phones.
they could have put it on the back..like they did with the one max back in 2013! so many OEMs do the same thing with their devices now (mate 7, V10, ..)
I own an iPhone 6S Plus and had almost every iPhone since 2008, but as Michael said, HTC were the ones who had their original look AND HTC Zoe features first, a few years ago, so this is just their fair-game response, IMO.
HTC just made a big mistake. This thing is ugly, and people won't even buy it as they're too afraid their friends would call it an "iPhone knockoff". Not to mention the fact that huge bezels shouldn't accompany software buttons. Look at LG, Sony, 1+, Motorola. Those phones have slim bezels and it makes software buttons look good. This phone is waayyy too ugly.
+Longan Hale Unfortunately, you are correct on the "iPhone knockoff" part, As for the navigation buttons, it's like they want hardware buttons but someone is forcing them to with software buttons, which leaves them with a large bezel at the bottom. I personally believe that hardware buttons add a more classy look and leave more space on the screen, but I also love the fact that I can customize my software buttons.
+TheSpeedo666 loving the customisability of the software buttons on my G4 too, but I honestly wonder whats with the bezels right? They don't have any more boomsound speakers. If it's about it being a mid range phone, the G4 beat has roughly the same specs, yet a better design. I'm pretty sure HTC will price their phones high anyways
that's how I feel should have made a better version of the m9 and included a better camera got rid of the s10 and got rid of the ugly htc black bar below the screen better boom sound and no ultrapixel camera...
Great comment. I agree that the general public will think that it is an iPhone knockoff, and that the hardware button just wasn't worth it. That button meant getting rid of one of HTC's largest competitive advantages (Boom Sound speakers), just for a fingerprint sensor which could have been placed elsewhere (such as the back, or ideally, on the power key like Sony).
TheSpeedo666 thats true, but I'm saying this because all it of these videos and comments are saying that HTC copied apple, and the truth is other way around
I don't get it, they didn't invent that design language. Antenna lines and metal body, fine, but you can't mistake an iPhone for any past HTC. This HTC can clearly be mistaken for an iPhone. Apple took the idea of the antenna lines from HTC but at least they made them look different
looks good. wish they have kept the boom sign and just relocated the finger print sensor to the back. also I'm not sure why low specs since it looks high end. 😕
OMG what a joke ! a iPhone 6 with big fat borders, "poor" S617, little battery (2150mah, lol, 2hours SO coming) for...>600€ !!! What is going on HTC ?! Who could buy this ? Wow...HTC is like the titanic, they was going good for years and suddently....
I just got my m9 a few months back. I like the look of the a9 but the big kicker for me are the front facing speakers. Add them to the "A" line and then I might be interested. Either way, I feel like every time I get a new htc product they immediately release a new one.
+speedster sunic +Novashadow115 the problem is, the consumer market doesn't know that the design was originally stolen from HTC, and they wouldn't acknowledge it even if they knew.
I have this phone and i'm loving it.Yep looks and feels like an Iphone 6 which i also have owned in the past ,difference being that its running android .So really no complaints in my every day usage ,battery in fact is great, exceeded my expectations so thats always a good thing .Not sure about the HTC 10 ,sticking with this for now .Love Htc phones always have done despite the companies shortcomings of which there are a few .Each to their own i guess.Have a great day guys and keep up the good work ,love your channel.
Doesn't matter if they inspired on the iPhone or otherwise, it's a beautiful phone and I guess it's pretty powerfull, I need to check more reviews, speed tests, benchmarks and camera to have a final opinion about this phone, for now it looks beautiful.
I am a HTC fan. I love the front facing speakers!! that's one thing they shouldn't have changed. I have large family, we have a variety of cell phones and the HTC speakers win by a long shot. HTC should have not changed it. I will definitely not be giving up my HTC m9 anytime soon
I keep rooting for HTC to come back and then they do something like this. There's nothing about this phone that makes it stand out in any way. It's decidedly mid-range, but competing with cheaper products that are actually superior.
Very happy I pre ordered a nexus because every phone this year from every OEM has been disappointing in some manner or another the exception might be the lg G4 because it's been getting updates pretty rapidly compared to the past but everything else is just sad
I really like the wine red one. Also, it seems like it will have a good dac for music listening , despite no longer having front facing speakers. Seems interesting and somewhat promising, but the 400$ price seems rather high for a mid-range device. Looks well-built and hopefully the headphone jack has a good amp and dac, that's what is the most important to me.
Looks good to me. The M7 was my last and favorite HTC phone, boom sound was nice but Touch ID is a must for modern devices. I like apple I'm currently using a iPhone but I always loved HTC.
Shame been with HTC sinse the m7 then got a HTC max, m8 then an m9 loved them all apart from the cameras. I didn't care much as I'd rather have the great sound with the beats on the m7 and boom sound on all others. such shame, any recommendations as my upgrades in 1 month?
Why couldn't they just sandwich the fingerprint sensor between the bottom speaker grill so they could keep Boomsound? And is this their new flagship? running non-flagship specs?
If they would've gone with thinner bezels they could've fit the boomsound speakers and the finger print scanner. I'm bummed to see the boomsound speakers go, but it looks pretty solid other than that.
Even when similar to the iphone 6, this looks great, has something that makes it look better(a subtile antena band instead of a big ring, better color choices...), now, for the m10, they should put all the new features, the stereo front facing speakers, a BIG battery, and a 128gb + sd option for the m10
while removing boomsound they should have placed function buttons beside the fingerprint scanner like samsung does. Instead of still placing them on screen, taking away a (to large) portion of the screen.
I would've probably considered this phone if only the screen size were a tiny bit bigger. I have a Note 4, so anything smaller would almost be too little for me. They didn't have to sacrifice the boom sound for the fingerprint scanner. They could've just put the scanner on the back. Also, they could've reduced the front real estate. We don't need a front HTC logo. If anything, they could've used up the space by expanding the display size. I do appreciate the fact that they went AMOLED.
wow. first HTC I got was the one X & that was my upgrade from an IPhone. After that I had the M7, M8 and now my M9. reason I stuck with HTC was because of the built durability and the awesome boom sound. Now that I saw this idk maybe leaving HTC .
Great job HTC and for that price, WAW! I wish you guys the best, if sales don't add up please don't layoff employees and instead just leave out the skin of htc sense, that's all that's been really stopping me from buying a htc one m phone for so long.
if the price is right, this device might replace my M8. I dont see a reason to hate the superLCD dysplay, it's very good if you compare it to nexus 5 for example. Also if the Snapdragon makes the phone more reliable in terms of performance and doesnt turn it into an oven then it's nothing bad. it's actually an advantage. you cant say a phone is bad just because it has "only" 6 cores, if it's snappy then its good, why look for more logic here? This might also be the first HTC device with a good camera in a while too, I'm kinda impressed with the device over all

Joel Betances That's a valid point.

+Pocketnow The battery life is what concerns me the most :\
www.10bestcase.com/expect-poor-battery-life-with-htc-one-a9-2150mah-battery/
+Dipesh Timilsina It's a valid concern, but that article completely fails to take into account Marshmallow's endurance enhancements. ^M
It seems HTC is trying to confuse people with theword design and material.
+zeon estevez ....HTC M9+ has both
Wait...so the physical home key is of no use other than its use of the finger print scanner?
+Sairakshit Sudhakar The fingerprint scanner does indeed double as a home key, and it unlocks the phone from standby with a press. ^M
+Pocketnow what the size of the screen!?
More than 5 Inches I guess
***** yep that one thing they could do to compromise that horrible bezel.
+abdalrouf omer 5 inch display.
They could have removed the Htc logo on the front instead of the speaker or like put the fingerprint sensor somewhere else... but no! "Let's remove something that made our phones stand out!"
Or did the boomsound speaker like the HTC Desire EYE and put it in between the display and plastic
I mean honestly... Is there a single reason to buy this phone over other android phones? Nnnnope
+Ben Holmes design, it runs Android 6.0, quick charge 3.0, finger print scanner, sense ui, blink feed. because it's a mid tier phone pricing should be reasonable

No Boom Sound? Wow! I'm glad I went ahead and got the Note 5.
First A9 video.....great job guys !!
Back looks better than iPhone imo.
man! Micheal Fisher is one of the best. his words of choice sounds good.
I will wait for the full review but the battery size sight unseen seems ridiculously small.
HTC always does a great phone and screws it on one component so bad I wouldn't even dream of buying it.
m7 - battery
m8 - camera
m9 - cpu and camera
better to get solid 8.5 on all aspects than seven 9s and two 4s.
*****
not the same price range.
When someone is unhappy with his toyota do you tell him to buy a ferrari?
Here the note 5 costs like 2 HTC one A9.
+Ran Bar-Levi wasn't it rumored to have a mrsp of 600 USD?
+José Muñoz now HTC says 399
+supergoose yeah, they have basically did not really do a highend phone on all aspects since the desire/nexus one on early 2010.
+Ran Bar-Levi neither did anyone else!
I'm undecided if I should get the Moto X Pure or HTC A9. The battery size on the A9 concerns me a bit.
WHY DID THEY DITCH BOOMSOUND. It looked so perfect until then. went from "holy shit this is my next phone" to completely off the table.
it was the one, single thing that pretty much 100% of people agreed was one of the best things about HTC, and they ditched it. Not only did they ditch it, they did not have to. why not just put the scanner on the back? this is pretty much suicide for their sales.

Hello, I was wondering if this is a good upgrade to go from a Galaxy S5?
Mainly in the Camera/Processor.
front looks like samsung, back looks like iphone(but they invented this back look)
And speaker placement is sadly both
+Roger Toledo haha true
That camera hump is from the iPhone though. HTC got really lazy with the design.
+Timothy Tasmin htc has been doing a camera humps for years , htc droid incredible, Htc evo, Htc resound and more over sea's models
The only thing i want to know is how good the rear camera is, compared to the previous Ones and other flagships.
I think it's safe to say HTC won't be around much longer!
I thought Samsung was bad!
+Micheal Cuntdrey screw you Samsung is the second riches in its mobile company, and the biggest chip manufacturer in the world behind intell, also 98 percent of amoled screens are dominated by Samsung, note 4 was the best phone ever, note 5 is okay i guess
Shaun Lew yeah but these 2015 flagships they made suck because of ram management.
+Micheal Cuntdrey Samsung is not going anywhere anytime soon. They may release bad phones, but they are the chip supplier for the unfathomabley successful iPhone 6/6S. that's where they get most of their profit.
+Micheal Cuntdrey Lol they are number one in the world in terms of mobile sales, Apple is a far second. Samsung ain't gonna die anytime soon.
Wow the A9 is a gorgeous phone. Probably the prettiest phone I've ever seen before.
Am i the only one that likes it? If the battery life isnt terrible (which on paper looks like it will be) ill buy it.
I like the phone as well.
I like the phone as well.
the phone actually looks cool
same here, like it, could be my next phone
I think A9 is much better than before.
As soon as I heard Michael's voice I liked the video.
Why is 21XXmAh even a consideration for battery size these days?
because a battery size dictates how long it would last on the owner's usage. and it's freaking 2015 yet they still have that low mAh. for screen sizes with at least 5", 3xxx mah should have been the norm these days
well the IPhone is smaller than that
+Dave Dean (Trouserdeagle) Keep in mind the phone has a snapdragon 617, so it's a lot more power efficient than other phones of its class. Not to mention it runs marshmallow, which increases battery life significantly allowing the small battery to keep up with other phones.
they could have put it on the back..like they did with the one max back in 2013! so many OEMs do the same thing with their devices now (mate 7, V10, ..)
“bye bye boomsound" cuz that's not important at all right guys?
+Jesse McClure They never said it isn't.
+Jesse McClure not important to me, my 2013 Moto X and my LG G4 are louder than my HTC M8.
+duttyow709 Not even close to true
sadubros i have all these phones so..... yeah.
+duttyow709 Maybe louder, but the HTC BoomSound has a much better, clearer and bass richer sound
i have one and i´m really satisfied, great performance, battery life is good (i only use a few social apps and google keep)
iPhone 6 design with the camera on the centre...
Phone changes, technology changes but the awesomeness of Mike is still the same .
best iphone clone yet
yep even m9 was better
I own an iPhone 6S Plus and had almost every iPhone since 2008, but as Michael said, HTC were the ones who had their original look AND HTC Zoe features first, a few years ago, so this is just their fair-game response, IMO.
Why does everyone keep cutting apples speaker placement and design first it was Samsung now HTC what happened to the uniqueness of being Android
Ooh man that crimson! That "raspberry" tinted device looks beautiful!
HTC just made a big mistake. This thing is ugly, and people won't even buy it as they're too afraid their friends would call it an "iPhone knockoff". is this their next flagship? I have held off upgrading to see what was announced today no BoomSound 4k capture at least 2 k display
HTC invented this design language, if anything, Apple copied HTC
finally someone gets it
+Saif Osman But the average person doesn't know that, which is bad for HTC
TheSpeedo666 thats true, but I'm saying this because all it of these videos and comments are saying that HTC copied apple, and the truth is other way around

so there is a physical home button and a touch screen one?
no BoomSound!!!!!!!!!NOW ITS A FUCKING IPHONE
HTC say it was either the boom front facing speakers or the finger print scanner .....So how do you explain the HTC M9+
YOU GOTTA REVIEW ADOPTABLE STORAGE!!
looks good. wish they have kept the boom sign and just relocated the finger print sensor to the back. also I'm not sure why low specs since it looks high end. 😕
HTC is quickly going down the toilet. All they needed to do was improve their camera.
I can't wait until you guys post the full review
OMG what a joke ! a iPhone 6 with big fat borders, "poor" S617, little battery (2150mah, lol, 2hours SO coming) for...>600€ !!! What is going on HTC ?! Who could buy this ?
Wow...HTC is like the titanic, they was going good for years and suddently....
The titanic didn't last a single year...
yeah ok my bad, I mean, HTC feel, in the past, strong, but now it's a joke
***** lol
What a HTC fanboy here, trying to save this shitty HTC Iphone6, oh sorry A9
Hey
I have a LG G3 running custom rom, i'm a pro android, I'm fighting against Apple policy...and HTC policy now :p
I just got my m9 a few months back. I like the look of the a9 but the big kicker for me are the front facing speakers. Add them to the "A" line and then I might be interested. Either way, I feel like every time I get a new htc product they immediately release a new one.
ugliest phone ever in smartphone history
+SASI KUMARR There's a limit to exaggeration.
+SASI KUMARR youre kidding right?? lmao, you've obviously never seen the micromax a60 andro
+Nas//Em/ /Pac//Big haha that thing is so ugly!
Zane Zinn ikr 😂
wow, it looks beautiful ..
HTC just might get back into the market with this.
Basically a shitty rip off of the iPhone 6.
Except the part what he specifically states the One M7 had the design first
did you just here what he said! HTC was the one to create the damn look in the first place. Apple fanboy much?
+speedster sunic +Novashadow115 the problem is, the consumer market doesn't know that the design was originally stolen from HTC, and they wouldn't acknowledge it even if they knew.
+TheSpeedo666 absolutely. I own a 6s and half of friends haven't seen a HTC phone since the OG Evo. My mom owns the m8 though
+Snake EyeZ Not like the iPhone 6 is a paragon of design anyway.
Is the A9 one of the secrets devices that were mentioned in the last podcast?
Great Review !! did an amazing job in contrasting the negatives and positives of the phone too bad HTC still isn't doing good till this day.
How did you get the video out so quickly Michael?
So is the m series pretty much over now?
Why not have boom sound and put the fingerprint reader on the back? The battery size worries me.
If this camera shows potential this could be my dream phone
I keep rooting for HTC to come back and then they do something like this. There's nothing about this phone that makes it stand out in any way. It's decidedly mid-range, but competing with cheaper products that are actually superior.
If i order this phone from the USA will it work in the UK?
I hope the next HTC One M10 features that awesome red colour... Alongside a long-overdue better camera.
Anyone know when we can expect an announcement for the M10?
Will the a9 be compatible with Verizon
That red color looks so damn good. If battery life is good, might be my next phone.
Very happy I pre ordered a nexus because every phone this year from every OEM has been disappointing in some manner or another the exception might be the lg G4 because it's been getting updates pretty rapidly compared to the past but everything else is just sad
Let's see if HTC can combine this with what's great about their flagships in the M10
The more phones HTC comes out with, the better I feel about my One m8, knowing it was the best phone they had ever made.
does it still have the IR blaster?
LOVE IT! Welcome back HTC
Is there sill going to be a one m10?
Shame been with HTC sinse the m7 then got a HTC max, m8 then an m9 loved them all apart from the cameras. I didn't care much as I'd rather have the great sound with the beats on the m7 and boom sound on all others. such shame, any recommendations as my upgrades in 1 month?
Its only gorilla glass 3 n not 4, mentioned in official HTC India site..Pls check with it n reply
Why couldn't they just sandwich the fingerprint sensor between the bottom speaker grill so they could keep Boomsound? And is this their new flagship? running non-flagship specs?
don't like the soft key icons, what makes them think they can do better than google?
Why couldn't they keep the boom sound AND put the fingerprint on the back --a la nexus 6(x/p)?
If they would've gone with thinner bezels they could've fit the boomsound speakers and the finger print scanner. I'm bummed to see the boomsound speakers go, but it looks pretty solid other than that.
Can this work with Virgin Mobile with the sim card?
I prefer the boom sound option. thanks for video and review.
I'd be rather worried about the small battery, but everything else looks great, specially the price!! Good call HTC
So excited to see this review. Android handsets are too big these days and the 5x is a mild disappointment IMHO.
The presence of the virtual on screen buttons is a very stupid idea when there is a large finger print sensor at the bottom that acts as a home button
So is this their flagship ?
Why would you leave boom sound when it's the most important part of the experience
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. iPhone is still the best phone in the world.
The Samsung Ativ S and the One M7 had metal unibody chassis before the iPhone. get outta here
+Novashadow115 The ATIV S was painted to look like metal, but there was nothing metal about it. pocketnow.com/2012/12/20/samsung-ativ-s-review ^M
Pocketnow I did not phrase my sentence properly. I know it was not metal but the design language is similar enough to draw comparisons
Even when similar to the iphone 6, this looks great, has something that makes it look better(a subtile antena band instead of a big ring, better color choices...), now, for the m10, they should put all the new features, the stereo front facing speakers, a BIG battery, and a 128gb + sd option for the m10
Why couldn't they keep the front facing speakers and put the finger print scanner at the back
Couldn't the make the fingerprint scanner also the home button
while removing boomsound they should have placed function buttons beside the fingerprint scanner like samsung does. Instead of still placing them on screen, taking away a (to large) portion of the screen.
I'm disappointed about the lack of boomsound a metallic front. I prefer the polished back too.
Red One looks gorgeous.
Love HTC❤❤
I think A9 also has its value . And the antenna design of A9 looks not bad.
Could have put the scanner on the back ???
what is the price?
Great job HTC and for that price, WAW! I wish you guys the best, if sales don't add up please don't layoff employees and instead just leave out the skin of htc sense, that's all that's been really stopping me from buying a htc one m phone for so long.
They could have used the m9 plus design where the fingerprint sensor was placed between the boom sound speakers.
HTC could have put the fingerprint senser on the side like the Xperia Z5, maintaining the Boom Sound speakers.
I may be the only person, but I like my M9. I don't have a problem with the physical dimensions of it or its screen.
Damn, good looking. Would love to get my hands on, but bought the edge+ andere nexus 6 already...
if the price is right, this device might replace my M8. This might also be the first HTC device with a good camera in a while too, I'm kinda impressed with the device over all
What happened to the boomsound that I used to know....
