I'm 71 and saw the original when I was 11. I've rewatched it a thousand times simply because the story is undying and the music is perfection. Now I can't wait to see Spielberg cradle an American treasure.

West side story nails the message of prejudice and dances into your heart every issue as we see in our world today, but in the midst of hate love still manages to evolve to love past differences and prick every heart to see true love is the winner. Even in death. Rita Moreno being in the new movie is sensational. Can't wait. I always brace myself when Tony is killed. True heros who dare to love someone different than you lives forever. It's a bit odd that Spielberg is making such a big fuss about the new film being more like the original Broadway show. In the original show 'Somewhere' was sung as an almost operatic solo right at the end by the wonderful Reri Grist, the African American soprano who went on to become a star in opera. And there was a ballet to go with it. Now we have the song being sung by Rita Moreno. It couldn't be MORE different to the show.
Can somebody tell me if choreography is still by Jerome Robbins or by another guy?! Or it is a kind of based on Robbins with some changes? And complete score by Bernstein is fully preserved or there is a new arrangement?! I am just curios to know what should be the difference between two movies except new cast?!
Akin to remaking Casablanca or The Third Man. The original stands the test of time. Jerome Robbins was a master choreographer and Wise was a fine director. Let’s stop with all the bleeding remakes and try something new
If there's one guaranteed thing in life, it's that Spielberg will give you a good movie. I never gave a crap about West Side Story, but I'll be seeing this in the theater because of who is making it
I suggest watching the original. Only thing that I see that was better about this one is that it introduces the story to people today who might not be aware of the older movie “based” on the story of Romeo and Juliet. While, I loved Natalie Wood in the original, Rachel Zegler is awesome. I still prefer the original actors of Anita and Tony.

Just saw this. I had high hopes since I grew up on this movie. Spielberg did a superb job on directing...musical scenes were true to the original. Of course, the current political narrative was heavily played upon with more emphasis on victimization and “big, bad whitey” that’s pretty obvious from the first talking scene. Where as in the original you’re introduced to two rival gangs without much backstory as to “who wronged who” that just have a general hatred for each other, here you’re given a pretty good idea of the victim and perpetrator. Not only that, but you know Hollywood couldn’t resist playing upon Anybody’s tomboy character to illustrate “lgbt hatred”, which was just annoying. I was hoping they wouldn’t twist this movie for political motive but it’s hard to get away from that now days. I will probably rewatch this movie at some point and just fast forward the parts in between the dancing and singing 🤷♀️
Why bother remaking this the same way as it was in 1960? The restored prints of the 70mm film stock look like 4K digital film if you get either the Blu-ray version or the 4K.. Why didn't Steven Spielberg modernize the story? He merely filmed his version of the same story and look of 1960 using modern digital film?? Why? Just plain laziness. He even film the dance hall scene the same way it was original shot. Why?
It's still set in the 60's but the script is entirely different. From the trailer, it looks like Tony's and Maria's romance is what causes the jets and sharks to fight. Probably not how it unfolds, but who knows. Of course in the original, the gangs were already at war before Tony and Maria met. It was just a turf war. Anyway, we can speculate until the full movie is out.

Where as in the original you’re introduced to two rival gangs without much backstory as to “who wronged who” that just have a general hatred for each other, here you’re given a pretty good idea of the victim and perpetrator. Not only that, but you know Hollywood couldn’t resist playing upon Anybody’s tomboy character to illustrate “lgbt hatred”, which was just annoying. I was hoping they wouldn’t twist this movie for political motive but it’s hard to get away from that now days. I will probably rewatch this movie at some point and just fast forward the parts in between the dancing and singing 🤷♀️

Why bother remaking this the same way as it was in 1960? The restored prints of the 70mm film stock look like 4K digital film if you get either the Blu-ray version or the 4K..
Why didn't Steven Spielberg modernize the story? He merely filmed his version of the same story and look of 1960 using modern digital film?? Why?
Just plain laziness. He even film the dance hall scene the same way it was original shot. Why?
Actually this version is a supposed to skew closer to the broadway version than the 60s film.
It's still set in the 60's but the script is entirely different. From the trailer, it looks like Tony's and Maria's romance is what causes the jets and sharks to fight. Probably not how it unfolds, but who knows. Of course in the original, the gangs were already at war before Tony and Maria met. It was just a turf war. Anyway, we can speculate until the full movie is out.
