  • BIKEPACKING BC - PART 9 (Kamloops to Stump Lake)
    Follow me on on this multi-part series as I go bikepacking from Nanaimo to Penticton (in a very round about way).
    This episode: After a rest day in Kamloops with the folks, I head out into Campbell Creek then connect with the old Merritt Highway (5A) passing lovely little fishing lakes known for their famous Kamloops Trout. While this was a short day, it wasn't without some efforts working against a headwind. My planned camping spot was full and I just wanted a quiet night, so I opted for a little secluded stealth setup out of earshot of the groups.

    Hard day at work, skipped my afternoon bike ride (3" of slushy snow on the ground). Come home, watch you ride bike on RUclips... problem solved! Seriously though, enjoying your adventures when I can't get out on my own. Thanks again for the hard work and entertaining content. I like the personal touch and seeing your personal connection to the land you travel over.

      It was... a little dusty at times, but very lovely. Very hot in the summers, and while is way up in Canada, you could mistake it for area in Arizona around Flagstaff.

      I had plans to take a totally different (more adventurous route), but with massive weather coming in I made a fluid decision (pun intended)

      Noted!! I have learned a lot from filming my first big trip - all the things I didn’t shoot, and should have shot. And things I over shot. But one doesn’t realize this until in the editing room trying to put it all together. Lessons learned and hopefully I’ll get better with time. I am planning some “how to” videos from suggestions everyone’s been giving. 🤜🏻🤛🏼🤘🏼

    Good times! Ever seen any grizzlys around those parts?

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 года назад

      Grizzlies are not known to be in this particular area (part 9) But early in the trip (parts 1-4) that is grizzly country. While other riders had seen numerous bears and a higher than usual number of serious encounters - I on the other hand saw almost no wildlife. Probably two factors. (A) The heavy smoke can change animal behaviour. (B) I had bells on my fork bags, so I was letting them all know I was coming down the mountain. I’ve had a few close encounters in my time though.

    • @CanadianSledDog
      @CanadianSledDog 3 года назад

      @@SaltyBeard_Adventures I try to stay out of grizzly country with my dog, since the dogs can easily anger the bears. Plus I like cooking right in front of my shelter. We're always running into black bears, most often moms with cubs that don't like to run, so we have to backtrack.

      I wearing a chamois liner and just a casual pair of shorts overtop and a button up shirt. This is my “touring” setup so when I opt to stop at a cafe I’m not all Lycra.

    These are great, thanks for sharing your adventures. I'm wondering about your hammock, do you always find a place to hang it? What do you do if you can't? I'm riding the full BC Trail this summer and trying to decide between a small tent or trying a hammock. Thanks in advance for your time.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 года назад

      Hi there... thanks for chiming in. I have yet to be left hanging ~ or shall I say, NOT hanging. Mind you, in general, once you start using a hammock, that is always in the back of your mind and you will plan accordingly. I've had to be creative a few times... once in a campground specifically for vehicles. Luckily the bordering campers were nice enough to let me string between the trees border of our sites. Bikepackers I think would generally not go to, or be included to use such a campground, and would rather be in the wilderness. If I where to be doing a trip say, in the Southwestern US where I know I would be in various treeless areas, I would probably go with a tent or bivi. And then, what if you travel above treeline..... remember as you get to the alpine areas, trees become smaller and weak, unable to support you. In regards to the BC trail, you would not have an issue finding a spot to hang your hammock. If using commercial campgrounds, I would tell the manager that you are a hammock user first to see if they can accomodate a spot for such. Knowing your optimal tree spacing can also help them place you. I found that during my first year of using my hammock, I always undefeated how big of tree spread I could string between. I actually will be making a hammock video for the spring. Contact me any time if you have questions.
