I have been on a journey to learn Chinese for 3 years thanks to Trevor James and yourself. Even though I feel like I've learned so much (maybe HSK 2.5ish lol) it still seems impossible that I will ever be able to understand a native speaker who isn't purposely trying to dumb down their speech for my benefit. I can pick out the words, but by the time my brain processes them, I'm too far behind to catch up. I won't quit, but I have a LONG way to go. This may be a decade+ long project for me
In my opinion, the way to speak fluent Chinese is just like the above 👆 said: To communicate directly with Chinese speakers, it is best to live in a Chinese environment for a few years. But learning to write Chinese characters is relatively difficult, which requires long-term mechanical practice and a lot of reading. I'm in a similar boat learning Japanese... probably gonna be a long project. If it helps to know, I'm just starting to be able to pick out words in conversations even though I have been learning for 2 years. We all learn differently, and at different speeds. Keep listening to tons of stuff in Chinese, and trying to speak! We're gonna make it!

If you stare at the face carefully it definitely looks uncanny. His facial expression is limited and his eyebrow is fixed in place when he blinks. Even when he moves his face around, there's little changes to his facial structure. He also refrains from moving his face on extreme angle, which is weird.

I’m 54 and recently went through ‘mid-life’ (yes, I know 54 isn’t technically mid-life!) crisis…but my ultimate conclusion was, other than good health, the most important to a happy life is in fact, having something to look forward to. Without hope for the future, we spiral and only go backward…or worse…downward.

This is a great interview and thank you for performing it. It has the right mix of empathy and curiosity. Many interviews, e.g. those performed on NPR, comprise of reading a list of questions. There is no involvement whatsoever by the interviewer with the subject. No reaction to any content and no possibility to seize upon new or surprising information. Your interviews differ and give relief to the standard canned interview.

I have been on a journey to learn Chinese for 3 years thanks to Trevor James and yourself. Even though I feel like I've learned so much (maybe HSK 2.5ish lol) it still seems impossible that I will ever be able to understand a native speaker who isn't purposely trying to dumb down their speech for my benefit. I can pick out the words, but by the time my brain processes them, I'm too far behind to catch up. I won't quit, but I have a LONG way to go. This may be a decade+ long project for me

I'm in a similar boat learning Japanese... probably gonna be a long project. If it helps to know, I'm just starting to be able to pick out words in conversations even though I have been learning for 2 years. We all learn differently, and at different speeds. Keep listening to tons of stuff in Chinese, and trying to speak! We're gonna make it!

If you stare at the face carefully it definitely looks uncanny. His facial expression is limited and his eyebrow is fixed in place when he blinks. Even when he moves his face around, there's little changes to his facial structure. He also refrains from moving his face on extreme angle, which is weird.

I find it impressive that it didn't glitch (at least through a quick skim of the interview) despite quick movements. But yeah he obviously made sure to face the camera the entire time.
His eyebrows don't move either, they're pretty much locked in one position the entire time lol, mouth glitches out and his tie has a green screen effect almost. His videos on tiktok look better but here it's pretty obvious. There's still thousands of people that think it's 100% real and that's what's really concerning for the future because 3-5 yrs from now it'll be near impossible to tell

About deepfake or not, I notice 2 parts, the first say "yes" it's at the end of 06:51, last frame before 52 when the head went from up to down quickly, at the down position it looks like another face.
The second say "no", it is at 21:34 when he jumps on his chair, even frame by frame no difference.

Definitely deep fake. Time lag glitches throughout where the filter face freezes with quicker head movements. Not enough asymmetrical micro facial expressions, flat filtered complexion. AI based on 60 minutes interview when Elon was younger.

I think he alludes to using deepfake. But as Xiaoman said, it is impressive. For a live video call, the computing power to create this with no stuttering or lag is amazing. And true, he can only move his face so far before it can't find the reference points. But the expressionism is spot on. And he's not claiming to be someone else, albeit he's trying to look like someone else, but he's not using it to ask for money, like a lot of those Shorts have from people using a voice AI of Elon trying to get people to buy into cryptoscams.
