get an M2 and you can, that thing is crazy forgiving. im brand new to golf and have really been struggling with the driver. i got an M2 last week and suddenly every drive is much much straighter. i hit a 341 total at golf smith while i was testing it out. which is what sold me.
+CalebChaseGolf beware of their numbers man, me too on their computers i hit it pretty long...,not that much on the course... Get Game golf and compare More reliable
I hit my M2 and a buddies Grenade this weekend. They were on the fairway within 2 yards of each other. The soft feeling shaft of the Grenade was noticeable, but felt nice.
I know this is a long drive video but i just finally reached a handicap of 1.4 witch is enough to qualify for the open. You have helped me SOOOOOOOO much with that. Before I watched you, I was a a handicap of 9 about 10 months ago
The shaft flexing in a way that increases the loft would also point the face left. Rick is blaming huge blocks on a shaft that's too soft, so many conflicting comments regarding this shaft and no rational thought.
+Tom Cooke I think you're referencing the way adjustable drivers work - the open the face, then when you square it address you've removed loft. But presenting the open face at impact is just a high shot moving right.
+Eric D - Adjustable driver necks twist the loft about the axis of the shaft, we're talking about the shaft flexing i.e. kicking forward. The shaft kicking forward in the downswing causing an increase in loft cannot also cause the face to point right.
I have used the Ping LS tec for 2 years and loved them until I tried the M2 2 weeks ago. The ball fly's off the face and even on mishits. Scary good. I'm selling my Ping LS TEC and have ordered the M2. All I can say is WOW
purchased the M2 at the start of the season after swinging the g25 for the last couple i reccomend you do easily gained 15 yards off the tee and just seems to hold the fairway on mishits!! go test it out first though to be sure good luck!
Here's the point. I'm 60 years old and still a scratch. It means one to 2 club difference for me for my approach shots. On par 5's i'm 15 yds minimum closer to the green which allows me to reach it in 2. My flexibility isn't what it once was so i'm relying on technology to help me. Maybe when you get to 60 with some physical limitations, you'll understand where i'm coming from. Secondly, this driver to straighter than the LS Tec. Lastly, I play 3-4 times a week and spend 4 hrs a week practicing my short game so I certainly look after that aspect of the game as well
Nice vid, and as usual nothing gets near TM M2, it just has to be classed as the best driver out at the minute and @£279 new its cheaper than all the top brands best drivers!
Different shafts, different swing speeds, different points of contact on the club face, different swingpaths..... the only thing that this aims to prove is that these club comparisons are meaningless.
Actually, the impact of the shaft on the ball is tiny, less than 2%. The biggest impact of the shaft is psychological. Mark Crossfield did a nice set of clips on this a while ago. So the big difference is strike and clearly the M2 works better for Rick in terms of lining up the sweetspot.
I agree with Crossfield when he says that a good player can manipulate the the release in such ways that the shaft becomes irrelevant (what matters is swingpath, clubhead speed, impact). Nonetheless I doubt as to whether that applies to most golfers.
I wouldn't take everything Crossfield has to say as gospel.. For him, shafts may make very little difference, but for the majority of golfers it's far more than just 'feel'. It can have a direct influence on that strike, and even the clubface.
I have the M4....an excellent driver with adjustable loft. My former club was the Ping but the face eventually cracked. Another good club at the time. Each time that I try the Calloway though it just doesn't perform well.
Rick Shiels -- or anyone reading this: I understand that since the coefficient of restitution (COR) cannot be increased beyond 0.830, that the manufacturers try to get more distance by increasing the time the ball sticks to the clubhead. The longer it sticks (with the 0.830 COR) to the clubhead, the father the ball goes, for some reason. There is a USGA limit for the time a ball sticks to the clubhead, just like a USGA COR limit. Which driver has the longest allowed time to stick to the clubhead??? That would be the longest driver. Yes???
You should put that M2 in the bag. Much higher MOI than your M1. And if you feel like you need lower spin than M2 with the same MOI than put the King LTD in your bag
nice fair vs. I found the bombtech works best when playing a power fade. the head of the club seems to want to do that and the low flippy kick point of the shaft makes it hard to draw the ball. If you set up for the power fade it is very controllable. It is very loud too! very very loud and forgiving.
+Get Back To Golf - No I'm purely talking about the effects of the shaft. You said 'flippy' kick point. Do you mean that the shaft releases early causing the club head to 'flip' through impact?
The shaft in the grenade is garbage. That is the product they are selling. If you want a proper shaft it will cost you more than the M2. People need to know that before they drop $300.
+frank hoxsey If you are playing an x-flex you are generating speed. I personally have the m2 with The rogue shaft in x-flex. It is surprisingly long. To my point with a proper shaft the argument of price is invalid. Of the people that I know that purchased the grenade all have returned. That is how I had the opportunity to compare. If you can stand the noise I'm sure the head is good. The shaft is garbage for higher swing speeds or aggressive swingers.
4 out of 6 yes, because the shaft couldn't handle the swing speeds, but at half the cost and a week or so getting it dialed, i say its the clear winner
Not necessarily - there are shaft options that are available for the same pricepoint as the stock - very much like the M2. I am an independent builder and Grenade is what i specialize in for my RH driver heads.
+Chris “Birdiexris” Embardino you can throw a graffaloy pro launch in for $60 I'm sure. Can you put a rogue or a fujikura? And keep the price under $300? I would say no. A true matrix black tie? I keep hearing it is 200 cheaper which it is not. That was my point. Put a comparable shaft in and your at the same price as the big boys. I'm sure the head is good most are. The engine/shaft is crap. For slower swing speeds I'm sure the shaft is ok. So sell the product to that type of player. Be informative to your consumer. Especially being a small USA company. It's more than just pulling the pin.
you should have the proper shaft in the grenade bc know if i remember it was too flexible and not stiff enough for you...you would think you would be a LOT longer with a stiffer grenade fitting.
Rick, we here in the states know the Grenade is good but you need to get a Krank F6 or F6.5 Much better driver and better shaft I switched from an M1 to it and added an easy 40 yards carry
Exactly, the Grenade only had 2 shots that he didn't put 10+ yards off of the fairway. It should be 3 successful drives for each in both rounds, that way we can actually see the distance they hit.
4 years later I’m going to give u an answer. The shaft isn’t “correct” for him. If he hit it straight he’d have to slow down his swing or change his swing path which would defeat the purpose. Drivers today are all good, it’s all about the correct shaft
Possibly, as 3 woods are not as tightly regulated as drivers (COR, hotter face). But then again, why hasn't it been done yet on Tour??? And what defines a 3 wood? I'm not sure. Could be defined by the loft. Then a 10° 3w would not possible (?)
Benny Frank the 3rd anything under 12 degrees loft is a driver. You can put a 3 wood head in a driver shaft all you want but it's still a driver from 1980
Tough to test those two clubs due to how different the clubs look and line up to the ball seems like how big the Grenade face is changes your swing from the taylormade
I used a 9.5degree Cleveland HiBore with Fujikura R shaft years ago (and still miss it!!) At 86 years old I now hit a TaylorMade adjustable driver which I never adjust with a 45oz overlength shaft. As you see my ballspeed has now decreased as well so I look to bandaids.........:(
Fair to say. While that shaft is good it's the wrong bend profile for Rick Shiels. Send him the Grenade with the Matrix Red Tie option and it would be a different story.
Stop with the ad hominem attacks. The Bombtech Grenade is just an inferior product. That's why you don't send samples to be tested by unbiased reviewers. It's the most technologically retarded driver on the market. Look at MGS CG placements for further info.
Rick you seem to be swinging up more on the Grenade as opposed to the M2. Looking at the loft at impact all the hits with the Grenade were between 20 and 25 degrees while the majority of your shots from the M2 hovered around 15-17 degree range. Is that based on the different shaft? Also do you think with more similar launch angle the spin rates with the Grenade would be a bit lower and more likely to compete with the M2?
the longest hit on the taylormade had dynamic loft of 14.7 2:53, but most of your strikes on the green ugly thing were 20+. Bring that loft down, and you'd prob more similar numbers imo.
Perspective and expectations are interesting beasts. Rick hits a 304 yard drive that's 18 yards offline and he reacts like he's stubbed his toe. I would be riding that driver down the fairway cheering "yeehaw" all day long if I hit that shot.
rick is your extra distance due to swing improvements or do you put it down to the tech? watching older videos you're hitting it a lot further now than before!
Howdy Rick.. is it worth changing the shaft on the Grenade to something that is more to your liking and retesting.. it is a shame that they use such a dodgy shaft as standard! Keep up the good work!!
Well not a dodgy shaft per se but just too flexible for his ss. Agreed, would be nice to see a fully fitted retest... BUT my guess is, grenade would go about the same as M2 ;-)
obviously the shaft killed you. but the fact you were writing off some strikes with the M2 and they were on the fairway and long says alot about the forgiveness
I'm sorry, but this seems like a worthless review. All this shows was which stock shaft was better for you. In the future, please use the same shaft in each so we get an idea (apples to apples) - unless you are doing a shaft review (in that case, please use the same heads).
God, I hate it when I heel it 304.
;)
Lol
lmao

Ikr!
Rick prefers an exotic, stiffer shaft.
"Bottomed, heely, weak." I wish I could say that about a 304 yard drive.
Yeah, I thought that as well. I'd take the bottom heely weak one all day long ;)
Same lol
get an M2 and you can, that thing is crazy forgiving. im brand new to golf and have really been struggling with the driver. i got an M2 last week and suddenly every drive is much much straighter. i hit a 341 total at golf smith while i was testing it out. which is what sold me.

Just proves how forgiving the M2 is.
I think rick not having his beard is making him not hit as hard lmfao
I know this is a long drive video but i just finally reached a handicap of 1.4 witch is enough to qualify for the open. You have helped me SOOOOOOOO much with that. Before I watched you, I was a a handicap of 9 about 10 months ago
I have the M2 but for the money the grenade shows it can hold it`s own I`m sure with the correct shaft it would of served you better Rick
I know you did the best you could with what you had but I'd love to see a comparison with the same shaft in both.
Nice video! Please repeat with the same, preferred, shaft. Let's really compare apples to apples.
Average driver buyer in golf shop... "Hey, which one makes the loudest noise and has the brightest graphics?"
I would be interested to see what the BombTech would do in the upgraded shaft. You are crushing that M2 though Rick.
why not change the shaft in the grenade to your m1 shaft to maximise the distance? dynamic loft was up near 20°, shaft over flexing perhaps?
The shaft flexing in a way that increases the loft would also point the face left. Rick is blaming huge blocks on a shaft that's too soft, so many conflicting comments regarding this shaft and no rational thought.
+Tom Cooke I think you're referencing the way adjustable drivers work - the open the face, then when you square it address you've removed loft. But presenting the open face at impact is just a high shot moving right.

+Tbtomthomas oliver - Get in the bin lad.
No point having a drive that doesn't go straight no matter how far it goes
Unfortunately mine goes about 150 yards on the parallel fairway.
try hitting behind the ball more and less across the ball
Which end of the club do I use?
+streamleazefishhouse well the grippy part typically goes in your hands
dam.....
I hate it when I duff my driver 300 yards!
I'd like to see a review on the grenade 2 driver and possibly their driving irons. Hearing some crazy numbers from those!
Who's here in 2019??
😀
Yep
👀
2024 lol
that grenade thing looks like one of them B-class drivers in the pro-shops discount bin.
Like a club I would have bought at Target or Walmart when I was a kid bc it was a "huge" driver

Rick, I've been with the grenade for awhile. I have had similar shaft issues, but I reshafted mine with an x tipped white tie. Now it's a beast.
Nice vid, and as usual nothing gets near TM M2, it just has to be classed as the best driver out at the minute and @£279 new its cheaper than all the top brands best drivers!
Watching this in 2021. Wow Rick looks and even sounds young.
TaylorMade M2 proves again that it's the best driver available right now!
Different shafts, different swing speeds, different points of contact on the club face, different swingpaths..... the only thing that this aims to prove is that these club comparisons are meaningless.

Hey Ric Shiels, could you test the bombtech irons? That’d be great. Thanks.

You should put that M2 in the bag. Much higher MOI than your M1. And if you feel like you need lower spin than M2 with the same MOI than put the King LTD in your bag
With Bombtech's attitude toward Rick who gave it a damn good review when he didn't HAVE to is NOW .....BUM-tech...imho
Fuck is up with that software?! 330 out the toe? Yeah alright mate.
He aint fooling nobody.
BombTech seemed to hang up in the air too much especially for a 9 degree
Yeah the launch angles for that driver were always close or over 20 degrees
Notice the high launch also, wishing he was using a stiffer shaft like he mentioned at the end to see the results.
I feel like he's getting secretly endorsed by Taylormade if he lets it win
nice fair vs. I found the bombtech works best when playing a power fade. the head of the club seems to want to do that and the low flippy kick point of the shaft makes it hard to draw the ball. 'Flippy' kick point would point the face further left... No?
Tom Cooke only if you are quick with your hands.. or cast it from the top.
+Get Back To Golf - No I'm purely talking about the effects of the shaft. You said 'flippy' kick point. Do you mean that the shaft releases early causing the club head to 'flip' through impact?
flippy meaning it lags behind and you need to over compensate for it
+Get Back To Golf - Then how do you explain the increase in dynamic loft?
u shouldnt have uploaded that because they werent as equally struck
The shaft in the grenade is garbage. That is the product they are selling. If you want a proper shaft it will cost you more than the M2. People need to know that before they drop $300.

+George Palumbo to my point in another post that the shaft is the wrong bend profile for +Rick Shiels.
His last hit was a perfect hit actually.
remind me why you use the m1 over the m2?
This was recommended for me...Didnt expect a baby Rick.
5 out of 6 strikes with grenade were terrible!
4 out of 6 yes, because the shaft couldn't handle the swing speeds, but at half the cost and a week or so getting it dialed, i say its the clear winner
+cal snow I agree. Sully even states in his guarantee it needs to be swung 200 times to get dialed in.
+cal snow it's not half the cost. It's a 100$ with an upgraded shaft it is the same price.
Not necessarily - there are shaft options that are available for the same pricepoint as the stock - very much like the M2. I am an independent builder and Grenade is what i specialize in for my RH driver heads.

Thank you Rick for fulfilling my request.
hey Peter review the bombtech wedges!!!
You can't " crank down " a 9.5 M2 to 9.25' !!!! Closest is 8.75' then the lie angle will have a variation of 4' ..
Test the grenade wedges! I really want to know if I should get them or not
Can you do a long drive comp with two very low budget drivers, I would love to see the results
@7:41 I’m gonna keep smashing these right...man of your word! 😝
Rick please do a video on opening snapchats and answering questions
you should have the proper shaft in the grenade bc know if i remember it was too flexible and not stiff enough for you...you would think you would be a LOT longer with a stiffer grenade fitting.
I know your struggle with heeling it 304 but when I do that it's not clue to where I want it lol. Nice video
Rick, we here in the states know the Grenade is good but you need to get a Krank F6 or F6.5
Much better driver and better shaft
I switched from an M1 to it and added an easy 40 yards carry
Hi Rick, I am a big fan of yours and i would really love it if you posted a video of you hitting shots to a pin 100 and 150 yards out on the GC2.
maybe if youd hit it straight, we could see how far it would ACTUALLY go
Exactly, the Grenade only had 2 shots that he didn't put 10+ yards off of the fairway. It should be 3 successful drives for each in both rounds, that way we can actually see the distance they hit.

Do M1 and Krank Formula 6
Rick, do you think a 3 wood at 10 degrees loft with a driver length shaft would go further than a 10 degrees driver?
Possibly, as 3 woods are not as tightly regulated as drivers (COR, hotter face).
But then again, why hasn't it been done yet on Tour??? And what defines a 3 wood? I'm not sure. Could be defined by the loft. Then a 10° 3w would not possible (?)

Good driver for the price.
Thanks Stephen
BombTechGolf not really, you can buy a year old driver for same price that's longer!
I would very much like to see you test the Bombtech Wedges.
Great vid, nice swing
Tough to test those two clubs due to how different the clubs look and line up to the ball seems like how big the Grenade face is changes your swing from the taylormade
You have that monitor juiced for sure
the loft ( that you didn't mention ) was 5-10 degree higher on the grenade shots. that's why it didn't carry as much.
first shot with M2 was 17.8 and first with grenade was 20.1
Do bombtech wedges next!
Your club head speed and drive distance is totally different now in 2020. Crazy to compare old videos.
Ummm.... Rick why aren't you playing this M2 with that shaft? Crushed!
I used a 9.5degree Cleveland HiBore with Fujikura R shaft years ago (and still miss it!!) At 86 years old I now hit a TaylorMade adjustable driver which I never adjust with a 45oz overlength shaft. As you see my ballspeed has now decreased as well so I look to bandaids.........:(
Legend says his beard left him to go on the pga tour!
How often you at Lytham ? Do you do personal lesson's ?
bombtech has some pretty affordable wedges coming out. think you can get your hands on them?
What are the shafts and lengths?
Come on Rick! Put a swing on it...do we need to get you some lessons from Crossfield?
L
Fair to say. While that shaft is good it's the wrong bend profile for Rick Shiels. Send him the Grenade with the Matrix Red Tie option and it would be a different story.
Stop with the ad hominem attacks. The Bombtech Grenade is just an inferior product. That's why you don't send samples to be tested by unbiased reviewers. It's the most technologically retarded driver on the market. Look at MGS CG placements for further info.
Just goes to show you, the Grenade is a dud. All hype, no boom!
Everything is good, Rick is just showing stock driver Vs stock driver. And that's what he did.
Of course it would. If you swung a brick on a piece of string and got similar ball speed, launch angle and spin it would also go 339 yards.
the longest hit on the taylormade had dynamic loft of 14.7 2:53, but most of your strikes on the green ugly thing were 20+.
917 vs epic
Hey Rick,
Would love it if you could review the optishot 2
Thanks love the videos keep up the work
How do you crank down adjustment on a driver.i have the taylormade r11
rick is your extra distance due to swing improvements or do you put it down to the tech? watching older videos you're hitting it a lot further now than before!
Has Rick reviewed the bombtech irons or wedges at all?
These long drives are about hitting it hard and seeing what happens.
Im actually surprised the Grenade didn't go further. 339 with M2 was unexpected.
"Nope no good" 304 yards *facepalm*
great honest review.. fuji just makes a better shaft lol
Good drive for me is ~275 yards.......... when you said "no good" and it was 304 yards lmaoooo
Got half way through vid, had to turn it off. Couldn't stAnd watching u spray it all over the lot
Rick can you test the first m2 drivers vs the m5/6 drivers.
Was just about to comment on a bottomy, heely, weak shot goes 304 down the fairway. Then saw that 353 people beat me to it....
Just goes to show a fitted or proper flex shaft makes a big trajectory difference even if the distance is close.
Seems like the shaft in the Grenade was just to weak.
EDIT: Rick said exactly that towards the end of the video.
Hey Rick can you do a review of the hole bomb tech 4.0 club set for us not so rich people looking for better then canadian tire clubs
Love my grenade set. 4-P 52,56,60 3w
These reviews don't mean anything because you're bot consistent with your ball flight. You sliced one 80 yards
According to Rick and most of the commenters on here, the shaft sliced one 80 yards...
Good ole clean cut Rick August 2019 anyone
Well when you can't hit the damn bombtech straight, you can't have a fair test. The Grenade is a long driver, mine will go 345-350.
I'm sorry, but this seems like a worthless review. All this shows was which stock shaft was better for you. In the future, please use the same shaft in each so we get an idea (apples to apples) - unless you are doing a shaft review (in that case, please use the same heads).
Wish my weak shots went 304 yards. Have you thought of changing the Bombtech shaft to see how much more yards you pick up or loose.
My brother just got the Grenade. He also keeps leaving it to the right. He has a stiff shaft and feels really floppy.
