Ion Antonescu, is one of the last great personalities that Romania had, he was forced to join the war with the Germans, after Hitler chunked North Transilvania for Hungary, as he was afraid that the rest of Romania will be either invaded by the soviets either by the nazis, was certainly that will happen, Antonescu did not allowed jews to be transported from Romania to the concentration camps, but, he approved jews to be killed for the Army headquarters from Odessa explosion, which were wired by the soviets, but he wrongly thought that the jews were involved, also didn't tooked actions agains the progroms, and the movement of Jews to Transnistria, and their settling there was horrible. But you have to take in consideration, that they were considered wrongly as enemies of the state, but still did not allowed their departure for concentration camps in west when Hitler asked for that, these jews have died by progroms and extremely harsh conditions of living. And if Romania wouldn't have been taken the nazi's side, would have been conquered like Balkans and Greece, or would have been conquered by soviets, reconquered by nazis, and then again by soviets.
@@unmarkedx6982 A lot of jews were romanians citizens, back then, in my native town, around 10000, Hungarian Hortist regime deported all of them in spring 44, when their govern was Eicheman's puppet, today are still many jews in Romania.

You can't. As long as Democracy and the concept of "Unalienable Rights" exists, these kinds of leaders will continue to arise. By it's very nature, Democracy spawns this kind of thought in people simply because it gives them the freedom to think that way. The only real solution is vigilance, which is why I have always believed that it's important for America to have a strong Military, so that we can defend ourselves and our allies from these kinds of people.
You can watch a documentary video (not a photo) of Antonescu's execution if you make the right request in an Internet search engine. He was finished off with several shots at point-blank range from a pistol, as the firing squad did their job badly (were their hands shaking?). Now many people in Romania call this execution a "ritual murder", since half of the policemen involved in the execution were allegedly Romanian Jews. I've seen a list of names somewhere.
Practically all executions are themselves ritual events. Antonescu was executed mostly for killing Jews. Whether a Jew was a conservative or a Communist, he had good cause to want this horrible man dead. The men executed with Ion Antonescu were Mihai Antonescu (no relation to Ion), President of the Council of ministers who did much of the bidding of Nazi Germany; Constantin Vasiliu, ultimately responsible for militias that killed Jews: and Gheorghe Alexianu, colonial boss of the annexed province of Transnistria (including Odessa) , which became a slaughterhouse for Jews. The firing squad aimed for his heart and hit it, and the gunshots to the heads of the condemned were intended to be absolutely certain in case any one of them pretended to be dead. Regular Romanian soldiers had cause to despise him for turning them into cannon fodder on behalf of Hitler. Just look at the death toll. Calling his death a "ritual murder" is the unfortunate and despicable use of a word commonly used in an unfounded accusation of Jews for killing a Christian for blood for Passover matzo (overt blood of any kind in food is a violation of kosher dietary laws). . .
@@paulbrower4265so, if Jews also killed Romanians (because they did) am I allowed to go to PALESTINE and shoot left and right like a maniac? Just asking ;)
@@paulbrower4265 Amazing, almost everything you wrote is wrong. Read his trial, it's the tip of the iceberg. 1. Antonescu was not killed for killing jews. He was killed because he was dangerous to be kept alive by the russians. After his arrest in August 1944, Antonescu was kept for a few weeks in a secret( then) location near Snagov, then quickly sent to Russia where he spent his days incarcerated until 1946. The reason for this quick and secret move was because the romanian communists who took him were afraid of his loyal officers and army attempting a rescue mission supported by the germans - like they did with Mussolini. He was loved by the soldiers, so that whole "had cause to despise him" is bs. He was only brought back to Romania after the situation settled down and the war was over....for the propaganda "trial".. 2. The russians knew that Ion Antonescu had been in talks to surrender Romania to the western Allies through Mihai Antonescu for almost a year, so they needed them both removed as quickly as possible. 4. Constantin Vasiliu and Gheorghe Alexianu - that was propaganda as they were the ones in charge of Transnistria. What you should know about Transnistria is that the romanian army and general population(romanian) of Transnistria was removedaccording to the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact by the russians and replaced with russian population ( like what happened in Ukraine recently). The romanian army was humiliated and the romanian population beaten, raped and humiliated on their way across the border. When the romanian army took Transnistria, Odessa was romanian payback for RM pact, the Odessa costly offensive and the bombing of romanian officer headquarters in Odessa. Which led to another payback from the russians. The jewish population from Odessa was not from Odessa, most were moved there just a year before. 5. The execution squad was made of men who never saw the front, they were just bad shots. What is missing from the video is that Ion Antonescu managed to get up on an elbow after the first shot and called to be shot again, which he was, with a rifle. That is why the footage is cut and the doctor goes straight to Antonescu before rushing away from the camera. Then, the 2 pistol shots occurred. So yeah... please read the entire "trial" depositions. If you're interested I can also give you a number of book references about the actual truth, not this bs wikipedia read video.
Just one side note that at 7:27 - 7:37 the picture shows officers of the Royal Hungarian Army, while you speaking about Rumania's side change. I do not know it was intended to be placed exactly on that sequence. Yes, Runamia's side change was not only the acknowledgement that Hitler's third Reich is a bad side and they lost the war, but also the geopolitical hope they will get back Transilvania which they occupied from Hungary in 1918 and got legalized by the Versailles packt. Finally this change paid hinself as Rumania got back the entire Transilvanian region from Stalin.
Occupied from Hungary? What Hungary, maybe Austria-Hungary. Where the rule came from Wien not Buda. And also in the medieval centuries, after the fail of Hungarian Crown, the principality of Transylvania was a sole entity, often alienated themselves with the ottomans against the leftovers of the hungarian crown, that had no continuity after Ottomans subjugated them.

I’m a great admirer of your channel and I honestly believe you’re doing a great job. But on this episode you got me big time because I’m romanian. Please excuse me for this intervention but intentionally or not a couple of things are missing in this story. First of all the war against soviets in 1941 was considered justified by romanian people because of the brutal year of 1940 when Romania had to cede to USSR Bessarabia and northern Bukovina, and horrific crimes followed up there against romanian population. Antonescu was seen the right person to save the bleeding romanian pride in this business. The war that romanian army sustained and continued against the USSR over the Nister river was seen(still is by some) kind of unnecessary as long as Romania had already taken its lost territories back. The Odessa genocide was following a terrible incident: the entire romanian military high command was blown up which resulted with the deaths of over 100 superior Romanian and German officers. (Antonescu had very hard feelings towards communist Jews for whom he blame for the attacks and provocations against the retreating and ailing romanian army back in 1940 after the soviet ultimatum. He remembered that the next year). That fuelled the terrible subsequent reprisals, sadly. The aftermath, it’s process organised by “People’s Tribunal” entity of the newly installed communist regime in Romania was a sham mostly. In 2006 Antonescu was cleared off for 2 of its accusations, proved to be unfair. During his regime thousands of Jews fled from nearby Hungary to Israel through Romania but sadly that’s not in this video mentioned. Undoubtedly he did some dirty actions that held him accountable for. Antonescu is regarded in Romania as a hero who did his best to save what was to be saved, was a first class military officer who served its country with dignity and respect. In 2006 a contest called “Mari romani” “Great romanians” of all time Antonescu was in a top ten list chosen by the romanian voters. Before judging someone it’s necessary to put all the facts not only what’s convenient to say.
I will give that he lived in a brutal time and the choices were hard. But still, no matter the circumstance, killing innocents in reprisal or people because of their race or religion are hanging crimes. No country should allow such things and if they do they become unto beasts. In this country we are still trying to get over the damage done to our own decency by reprisals against the native population. We were guilty, it was a crime and some of those we hailed as heroes in that long ago time were actually despicable villains. In this country if you kill a single human being for a cause other than clear self defense you can spend the rest of your life in incarceration or in some of the more brutal states can be executed. Antonescu may not have been the worst of the supporters of Hitler and may not even as bad as our 'Allie' Stalin. Still .....
That's a lot of verbiage. I get that you want / need to vent. Which key facts are incorrect in the video? Were thousands of civilians murdered? If not, where's the evidence?
@@kmvoss But that was "only" 9400 Jews. Iasi was a massacre not only by the police there, but the neighbors of the Jews also helped out enthusiastically and then stole the property of those they had murdered. Nice folks there.

Romanian here. 1. Full-blown Allied countries like Czechoslovakia and Poland were left in Stalin's hands *anyway.* So, why *wouldn't* Romania cause Moscow some pain before the decades of being under its thumb? Most of the Jews killed by Romanians were *Soviet* Jews. IE, the enemy. We really didn't lose anything by joining the Axis. To the contrary: following Italy's surrender, for 1 year (September 1943 - August 1944) we were the second Axis Power in Europe, or in other words, *Germany's main European ally.* That's about the peak of Romania's status within Europe. 2. Antonescu was one of only 4 wartime officials we executed. Lowest number of wartime Axis officials executed in Eastern Europe. In all, we got away with sentencing only 187 Axis officials, at least 14 of which were rehabilitated after the fall of Communism. Antonescu also was the only one who didn't appeal his death sentence. He *wanted* to go, so I'm not quite sure how "avenging" an execution this was. 3. Unlike the Germans, we actually won in the end. Our Jews are gone. From well over half a million before WW2 to 3000 today (tops). My native city has a Swastika and two SS lightning pairs painted on the sidewalk of one of its main streets. *For years.* There are literally 0 Jews for dozens of miles around, so nobody is complaining.

Notice the different treatment of Finnish and Romanian leadership. Both countries had to choose sides, and they could have had some independence (as Finland exercised) on the side of Germany that they would not have had as allies of the Soviet Union. The difference is that the Finns did not do massacres. They acted honorably, and they were able to get off lightly.

Calling his death a "ritual murder" is the unfortunate and despicable use of a word commonly used in an unfounded accusation of Jews for killing a Christian for blood for Passover matzo (overt blood of any kind in food is a violation of kosher dietary laws). . .
@@paulbrower4265 AntiSemitism is still alive in Romania, and together with the Ukrainians and Poles they just can't help hating Jews !!
Looks like you can spell correctly "Hungarian", but intentionally spell "Romania" as "Rumania" and "Runamia".

Iași pogrom - Check it out. Ion was a mass murderer of Jews. He's your greatest? Yikes.
@@kmvoss But that was "only" 9400 Jews. Iasi was a massacre not only by the police there, but the neighbors of the Jews also helped out enthusiastically and then stole the property of those they had murdered. Nice folks there.

Strange news - antonscu fleed to argentina and newer faced a trial , but that was not uncommen in 1945 days - you might think that the allieds put an arrest warrant on number 1 target Adolf Hitler but they did not , maybe that why he lived to be really old out in Katagonien (Argentina) living on land owned by the former dutch queens husband
