  • Henry Rinnan, one of eight children of a shoemaker, was born on 14 May 1915 in the Norwegian town of Levanger. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. During the Winter War which was fought between 30 November 1939 and 13 March 1940, Henry Rinnan tried to enlist with the Finns to fight against the Soviet Union, but was rejected due to his poor physique as the army rejected people with dentures and Rinnan had dentures in his upper mouth. The German invasion of Norway began on 9 April 1940, and two months later, on 10 June 1940, Norway fell to Germany. During the invasion, Rinnan drove a truck for the Norwegian Army.
In January 1942, Henry Rinnan recruited three agents for his operations. At the beginning, the members of the Rinnan’s unit were only involved in intelligence and infiltration. The group - which later consisted of around 50 - 60 Norwegian informants - was known as Sonderabteilung Lola - meaning the Special Unit Lola - or after the war as the Rinnan gang as they all worked for Henry Rinnan. Rinnan worked closely with the German Security Police in Trondheim, where his main contacts were German officers Walter Gemmecke and Gerhard Flesch - a commander of the security service and security police in Trondheim. Rinnan is said to have been very impressed by Flesch, both as a tall, handsome man with a great uniform and the power he had to decide over life and death in his district. Flesch usually listened to Rinnan's advice when the Gestapo planned an operation and is said to have personally tortured prisoners in Rinnan's presence.
The Rinnan group was not formally a part of the Nazi Party intelligence service the SD until 1943 when Rinnan received a formal position within the occupation. Before this, he had reported on people in the resistance to Flesch and Gemmecke, so that these people were arrested, tortured and possibly killed, or put in concentration camps. From 1943 however, their activities were expanded to include torture, murder and military action. From September 1943, the group had a base at Jonsvannsveien 46 in Trondheim, which after the war became known as Gang cloister. This base was equipped with cells and torture chambers in the basement, where several were killed under torture.

They say in this documentary that he was liked at school. The truth is that he was bullied at school because he was so little. Even as adult he was only 161 cm high. This is significant to why he later become a torturer! It`s not a excuse ofcourse, but it is a part of the story!

Well, during the Second World War there were those who fought against the Nazis and those who supported their killing machinery, even betraying their families, friends and country. I hope that I will never have to face such evil and if I do, I do believe that I will make the right decision. Great video World History, thank you so much for your hard work.

Nothing unusual for Norway. Read about discrimination and torturing of Norwegian citizens who were born from German servicemen. Torturing ranged from teacher's initiated bulling and beating of half-German school students to detention in prisons and widely spread in incest affected Norway psychiatrics facilities till 1970s (could be later in some rural incest practicing places). Some of those half-Germans were used for medical experimentations allegedly conducted under government research programs.
There was a huge lawsuit against Norwegian government on this crime against humanity in 2007. The probably most known victim of such discrimination is the brunette from ABBA pop group, who got lucky to get refuge in Sweden.

@@lisapet160yes ww2 was a fd up war. I lost family in croatia to mo stars worse than the ss. The ss thought they were brutal. That should show how bad they were. The ustase. They made the ss look like boy scouts. They were true fanatics, and brutal, and just killed any way they could.

Well, but it was a national post war trauma. Look around. Do you see more consequenses caused by WWII even till this day?
In 2005 I spoke to a German historian student. He said that the Germans took the responsibility post WWII, and that the Germans never really got to speak their opinion. I can see that, I replied, but remember in a historic perspective it happened only 60 years ago.Maybe the time is yet not right. The German looked at me and smiled but didn't say anything. I don't know what that ment
edit. If 60 years is not enough, how can we expect that everything fell to place the first decade post war?

George Orwell’s book “1984” describes a totalitarian state where you could be arrested for “thought crime”. The story of Rinnan and his colleagues inviting people to engage in conversation about the Nazi occupation reminded me of the paranoia that goes with living in a society where no one is safe, guilty and innocent suffer equally and all you have is your minute by minute existence.
