He had a mini heart attack when she said, “your secret is out.” And then went silent. Bless his soul he thought she knew about his attraction towards herself!!
When Emma first sees Mr Knightley in different prespective, when she realises how special he is. They both played these characters perfectly ! We can feel their feelings and thoughts. My favourite adaptation of this beautiful novel.
Romola Garai and JL Miller just give incomparable performances here and throughout the series. They will always be, for me, the definitive Emma and Knightley. A superb production all round.
Same, I came here after listening to a podcast which mentioned that these two have no chemistry compared to the Paltrow Emma. For me they have the best chemistry among all Emmas and Knightleys
@@docbailey3265 definitely. She is a very joyous person, but you could see her expression change from lighthearted fun to a subdued, wondering look of attraction.
Their dance makes me cry every single time!!!! JLM is soooo good at showing himself struggle with his feelings and vulnerability in this dance. Amazing acting.
Yes I love that our dear Knightley has not one but two “Ohhhh crap she knows!” moments here. The second is Emma’s “Why, you!..if you will ask me!” It’s really the first time that you see how totally Emma has him under her power.
Having watched this several times, I feel Miss Bate's is more observant than we all thought, when she is standing with Mrs Weston watching them dance, she looks as if she can see the magic between them, we know Knightley is already in love with Emma, and she is getting the first stirrings, to me it seems Miss Bate's can see it.
This is one of my most favourite dances in an Austen adaptation (and there have been a lot). Infuriating how much longer it takes them to get it together
Not yet...her moment comes later. Once Harriet tells her she is in love with him and she thinks Knightley is in love with her as well...then Emma realizes that she is in love with Mr. K.
Why is it every time I watch this, when they are dancing with an arm around each other gazing into each others eyes I want to yell kiss her already, but if he did Emma would melt and realise who she really is in love with far to early then there would be no story.
Life was rough for most people. Only the few wealthy people faired well with the help of hundreds of maids and butlers. They are still prone to die in childbirth and other diseases though because vaccines and other drugs weren’t invented yet. I would not want to be in that time period. Even walking through the muddy streets is already a no no.
I really dont know you guys but the "littleness" sounds such a harsh and tough offense. The worst curse and names wouldn't have made me blush for, almost poor, Mr Elton
@@kellybaxter2558 the secret she was referring to here was that he dances well. After he swears up and down in a prior scene, "I don't enjoy dancing, and I'm not good at it," she finds out that he's very good at it and does in fact enjoy it in the right circumstances. (It comes out later that the whole reason he was grumpy about dancing was because he was jealous of Frank Churchill because he thought Emma liked Frank and didn't want to see them dancing together the whole night.) But when she tells him his secret is out, he's afraid that she had figured out somehow that he's been secretly in love with her for years.
It’s a miniseries. Title is “Emma” based on Jane Austen’s novel. There are many “Emma” adaptations, this particular one is made in 2009, starring Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller.
This version always has me torn. I don't like Romola Gari as Emma, she has these weird little moments where she acts as though Emma is a bit giddy. Though I do like Jonny Lee Miller as Mr Knightley.
Nah. In clips her mannerisms seem a bit off, but in context of the whole movie she seems very bright but just a bit ditzy, as one might expect from an overprotected 21 year old.
I think Romola does a great job of portraying a protected, wealthy, self-assured young woman with a kind heart, who because of her privileged position, is blind to the complications and tensions in the lives of other poorer people.

My favourite version of Emma. Perfect chemistry between these two ❤
She is my favorite Emma. From smiles and giggles to adoring gazes…
I really love both versions from 1996. but this version is my favorite. And Emma and Mr. Knightley and the film itself as a whole. and the music!

I love it!
OMG yes!!! And these days it's all communication via electronic devices....

Exactly what I was thinking! He is the perfect picture of an introverted and quiet man struggling with his feelings!

Jonny Lee Miller is perfect as Mr Knightley. As a teenager and young adult, he was my pick from Jane Austen’s heroes.
he has a beautiful speaking voice. It almost has a musical quality to it.
Yes hes lovely
Yes. He narrates the beginning of the film. A very warm, resonate voice. I could fall asleep to him reading.

Beautiful music, beautiful dance, wonderfully acted...

I just noticed this is the song they play at the beginning of each episode! Beautiful song! 💕💕

Good acting, unbelievably bad music. It's like a kindergarten show soundtrack, with some pathetic gestures at an archaic sound.
I thought the music brought out the feelings of both people, especially Knightley who is made breathless by the closeness to his beloved Emma.
