There has to be some irony in a 59-year-old leaving a grumpy rant after reading one page of a book (partially) because he doesn't think 59-year-olds are that grumpy.

Yeah.... I mean, I guess I can understand a 59 yr old might take it personally. But, then again, at the same time-it's a singular 59 yr old FICTIONAL character; unless the book literally states outright or clearly insinuates that this is something common of what all 59 yr olds are like or such, then just because the character IS 59 & is a particular way does not at all mean it's meant as a statement about any or all real-life 59 yr olds, nor does it really have to be at all even remotely representative-of &/or true-to reality to still be a great character or a great book.😅😅 🤔🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️😁

TBF, too many povs is precisely why I've DNFed some fantasy books/series. It's just not my cup of tea, it's a taste thing.
I actually find negative reviews extremely helpful, well at least when they're constructive or detailed. People can more often than not identify much better what they dislike instead of like. So even a negative review can influence me positively in wanting to read a book that I think will fit my reading tastes!

Yes, detailed and constructive negative review that *AWARE OF THEIR OWN BIAS* make me want to read the book even more than the positive review
This is true for everything too. When i'm shopping for anything i go to the negative reviews to see if i can live with the cons or not.

This is why I always try to read the 3 star reviews. 1 stars can be filled with angry ppl and 5 stars can have a lot of biased super fans. 3 stars usually have much more thought and helpful criticism

I was also thinking this with 'The Frenchman's Creek' first review. Merphy goes to say sure the characters might be bad and you might not like the story, but how can you hate the authors writing... Like that's literally what bad writing is lmao sure an author can plan a story out, but if the content or characters aren't well written in the first place then no matter how creative or interesting an ending might be it's not worth it. It's like people that continue to say "ohhh just you wait, it'll get good trust me" "just keep going, you'll see in another 50 chapters or 34 episodes" and it never does.
I expected that second Ove review to devolve into “I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces.”

Harliquin novels are known as the "Trashy Romance Novels" that are super short and you can read in one sitting usually. For most people they're guilty pleasure to reading them because they're not usually well written and focus on so much Romance that you would think that all the characters think about. They're also the books that people make fun of when doing parodies of Romance because a lot of the REALLY BAD Romance tropes come from Harliquin novels.
The Fact that the person compared that one story to an Harliquin Novel has me feeling like they're not exactly.... Into romance at all in any form. And is very condescending and hyper focused on *their* definition on "Feminism" and will find any excuse to bash other views.
That quote that reviewer pulled from George Elliot about silly women writing lady things was quite misogynistic and gave "I'm not like other girls" so I don't know what her definition of feminism is🙄
@@mitchierainbow7353 lol I guess I should have clarified. the reason why I put "Feminism" in quotes for this person's definition was because it sounded like the misogynistic direction of it as you pointed out. Like you said, it does feel very much like a "I'm not like other girls"/"Masculine is the best over the feminine" vibe because they look down on those who even have a guilty pleasure of the more corny stories that is just sometimes fun to read. I won't lie, I do like a good "Headstrong woman who doesn't like girly" but I also do love the more feminine who do do mistakes and may not make choices that's exactly "best" for the story. Let girls have flaws people. And that whole quote was completely out of context as George Elliot was dealing with a *very* different time and different views. To use that quote in that person's context is very overly condescending to the people reading the book and enjoying it.
(I actually didn't see any indication what gender the person was, so that's why I'm sticking to they for now. xD if you can show me where to find that, as I don't use good reads often, it'll help me better.)

I always like seeing reviews that are the opposite of how I felt because it really widens my perspective on somethings. And differing opinions can lead to some really fascinating debates and discussions.
That one review for the Frenchman’s Creek: “I’m gonna repeat this one sexist remark which I know *sounds* sexist, but it was said by a woman so it’s okay”
It's like the "it's okay I told this racist joke, I have a black friend" but even worse because (a) he didn't know Elliot at all, and (b) she's dead so can't confirm or refute the actual intent of that remark as it relates to HIS argument.
While Ove might not be respresentative of all 59 year olds, I can at least call him representative of the only 59 year old I currently know the best, him being my dad.
Same my dad is 57 and often curmudgeonly.
The review at 12:30 😂. They clearly haven't read enough epic fantasy. They should start Wheel of Time next. Then 5 POVs won't seem like much at all.
i can't believe that one Ove critic's biggest beef was that he didn't know any 59 yr olds who were as curmudgeonly as Ove. Like THAT'S why you drop a book? There's millions of 59 yr olds in the world, i gotta think 1 or 2 are scrooge-like, and if not, there's this thing called suspension of disbelief, that is quite wonderous in enhancing one's enjoyment of a story.
"I personally haven't experienced that therefore it either doesn't exist or doesn't interest me" is such a silly mindset.
Plus, just because a character fits in a certain age group (or other group of people), doesn't mean they are meant to represent or relate to that group. A character can fit in a group and still be an outlier

No, he is a person that has trouble getting older and the fact that the book depicted his age as past their prime bother him, he should have keep reading but he definitely fell out of love there... To each their own i guess

For real, I took her recommendation to read The Lies of Lock Llamora after getting into her channel to see her reactions to One Piece. I find it super hard to get into more adult books, but I'm instantly intrigued by this book. Its excellent

I feel like people should really explain what they mean about bad writing😅 because often times it comes down to preference and it's not fair to say a book has bad writing JUST because it is not their preference.

Omg, I'm brazilian and I got so excited when I found out there's an english version of "the posthumous memories of brás cubas"! It's a classic here in Brazil and it's considered one of the hardest books to read in portuguese, which is why I haven't read it yet because I'm scared I'm not going to be able to understand anything hahaha. Machado de assis is, like, our william shakespeare and it's really great to see that his books are being read in other languages too.

If A Man Called Ove takes place around the time it was written (2012), Ove would be born in 1953. I’m thinking 59 year olds in 2012 might be less tech savvy (generally) than 59 year olds in 2022. My parents were born in the 60s and struggle with new technology constantly.

Are you serious? When I see someone talking mad garbage about One Piece I immediately have so many counter-arguments ready that I could write essays in response.
Funny thing is, Odas strange character designs were the main reason why I neglected One Piece for years after becoming an anime and manga fan. I thought "This is not how anime characters should look like! This looks like something out of american cartoons!" And today I adore Odas style. It is so unique, playful and sometimes simply hilarious. I can not imagine One Piece looking any different today. Heck, it is even extremely jarring to imagine it looking like most anime do.

Retribution Falls is so good! I really think you'll enjoy it. The world and characters are so unique (I definitely get Locke vibes from Frey)
11:38 Oh, definitely read Retribution Falls (and of course the rest of the Tales of the Ketty Jay series, there's 4 of them in all), I came to it on the recommendation that it's kinda like Firefly in its character set up. But on reading it found that was true but it's more piratey and steampunk with magic, and it's a lot of fun, a bunch of rogue-ish characters you actually end up caring for and even book 4 and the end of the story sticks the landing satisfyingly.
I thought Ove was perfectly realistic because my father-in-law is almost exactly like that! He even falls in the same age demographic.
For Frenchman’s creek, it’s my first time reading du Maurier, and I’m so impressed by her writing! Especially the first chapter how she started it reminiscing abt the past and then we entered the story in a dream like start.. it’s beyond beautiful! Also characters who see the magic in nature is everything to me + pirates!! It’s a CANDY!

No, I stopped reading Ove at page 1 as well, and I just turned 20 last month. Something about the first page is just very obnoxious. It's an old retread of a tired joke, with dialogue that sounded really out of touch with how older people really are.

Man, I'm so happy I started reading again last year after like a 3 year stretch. It's led me to find BookTube™ and I'm so happy about it.
The Ove review by the marine corp vet got me laughing so hard, its so american to be insecure enough to say people like this don't exist because they are the same age and they aren't like that.
(Take the next piece with a grain of salt because i have not read the book and only seen pieces of the movie about ) As a swede everyone knows someone that reminds them of Ove, its almost a swedish stereotype executed well from what i understand. So the american reviewer saying maybe swedes are like this is funny. Although basically claiming no americans are like Ove is kinda hilarious and also classic american not being able to comprehend other cultures existing.
He then proceeds to brag about his personal achievements, as if they prove his point. Yes, he admits to not being typical, but at the same time does not understand, that Ove is one person, not a collective of people his age. Also says he keeps up with technology, yet is a clear Apple fanboy.
I know! Just because a character is a certain way, doesn’t mean the author is saying all people are like this 🤦♀️ old man needs to grow up

Haven't actually read the book yet (it's on my shelf, I'll get to it once the reading for my degree is done lol) but I have seen the film so many times and I love it. I definitely know a couple of Oves, especially back in Sweden around my parents' neighbourhoods. Some of them are 70+. Some of them are like, 40-50. Even if I don't know one person that is Ove to a tee, I know so many people who have little bits and aspects of Ove and I just feel like it's so spot on. And yeah, completely missing the whole 'this book is set on the other side of the planet' is just. So American, it's hilarious x)) At the same time, it's so annoying that Swedish books can't even be about Swedish stereotypes without someone coming in and going 'this is wrong' because for me and a lot of other Swedish people, it's not. So if anyone needs better representation, tbh, it's not middle-aged (or older) American men, it's different culturessssss because white people have different cultures too x)

I'm 71, own a MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, iPhone, Apple Watch and love tech. I have a 40 year-old son who is an absolute Luddite. So age means little. IMO, Ove was on the autism spectrum. He needed counseling that he never got. I did not enjoy the book. I know too many miserable people to want to read about another.
Yesterday I was talking to this girl who apparently hates Machado de Assis' _As Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas_ (one of my favourites) but absolutely loved José de Alencar's _Iracema_ (one of my DNFs even after three tries in different times of my life).

The ember blade is one of those books that definitely could be condensed but at the same time I don’t really want it to be cause I want to be in that story for as long as I possibly can

Call me old fashioned, but maybe don't review a book if you've only read one page. Also the reasoning behind it is so strange: "this character isn't like me or anyone I know at my age, so I'm going to go on a rant about it."
I personally haven't read the book, but this is just a reminder to take rating with a massive grain of salt.
A Man Called Ove is also a Swedish film - its good.
The only one I had read was One Piece and I did not make it through the first 3 vol book. It was also my first manga and I am still only on my 3rd. I have discovered that I just don't really enjoy absurd fiction unless it is in horror. I have been enjoying Junji Ito which I picked up on your recommendation. I read Gyo and am working on Uzumaki.
Continue reading One Piece until the end of Arlong Park. This is where a majority of people get hooked and discover that the series is more than meets the eye.

That one reviewer clearly has never heard on internalized misogyny i.e. just because you quoted a woman doesn't mean that woman wasn't being super misogynistic and dismissive.
But seriously though, I know you don't typically read middle grade but I would highly recommend The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch, the narrative style sounds really similar to Bras Cubas and it's got secret societies and alchemy and magic (like "real world" magicians kind of magic, like pulling a rabbit out of a hat kind of "magic") and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Edit: pretty please make a shirt that says "a silly lady who reads silly lady novels" because I will give you all my money

Have you read Brandon Sandersons Alcatraz books? They are very underrated and the kind of meta humor you are describing in the posthumous memoirs of Bras Cubas really reminds me of the Alcatraz books. So I think you might like then.
I’m rereading The Reader by Traci Chee right now and I just keep thinking how much I think you would like it! It’s a YA fantasy, but it has really interesting worldbuilding, beautiful prose, aaaand PIRATES! I’ve only read the first one in the series so I don’t know how the other two books go, but I have a lot of faith in the author from the first book. That said, you probably have hundreds of other books you want to check out all the time ❤️

I'm reminded of how, thanks to Google Play Books stealing reviews from Goodreads, I saw a scathing review of a book series I like, directly targeted at the characters, who are all anthropomorphic non-human animals.
I know the author would hate to see that review, because of the passion he had put into writing the series (the review was for the first book) and the design and development of the characters, especially the titular character of the series, who is a wolf.
This was too much fun to watch
