I think part of the joy in the hybrid model is powersplit device that mimics a traditional CVT is able to just pull and pull almost like a freight train, even keep pulling hard far past 100 mph. Like yeah, it isn't like every other luxury sports car out there.. So what! Stand out, and enjoy the driving experience. I think too often automotive journalists want all the same things out of every car. I love your channel man, I've been subscribed for years and years, and I do know how you feel very strong about CVTs. I don't like them either, I can't stand the belt type, but Toyota lexus uses just a pair of electric motors and a plantary gear set to mimic a transmission. Pretty cool actually! @francisjtuk I use the EV button quite a bit for town driving. Also, it's better to accelerate up to desired speed fairly quickly and then back off the throttle and let the engine settle into hybrid mode. It's possible to cruise at 70mph at 1500 rpm, even up to 80mph.
The GS will always be a better-looking vehicle over the ES. The GS is a proper Luxury or Luxury Sports Sedan. I'm a big fan of the ES350, however You might have a valid point concerning the es350 looking very similar to the Avalon. With that said, both cars are great!
if that car feels slow on kickdown , then there is something strange with the car ,, kickdown in sport mode should really give you fast and instant acceleration. Exception is before the engine and battery have the correct temperature, it will feel more sluggish indeed..
18:00 And I have to say the paddles are useless. It doesn’t really do a great job of mimicking gears. It also takes forever when I actually pull the paddle.
the part under the hood of the video shows your knowledge by heart of all the stats of the cars and every competing car or sibling cars. Well done sir very nice review
I hope they don't discontinue the GS lineup and just improve upon it. Otherwise people will have to look somewhere else for a mid-sized RWD/AWD luxury sedan. And once people get hooked/addicted to the BMWs/AUDIs/MERCs driving experience, its hard to get them back.
It's interesting how you felt about the nimbleness. The GS450h has a tighter turning circle compared to the 2019 ES, smaller dimensions as well as objectively better lateral grip. I wonder if it's perhaps a difference in the driver's relative position in the car as well as visibility that makes it feel like that for you.
TOTO Cult They didn't take them off because this car never had them to begin with. This is an older Lexus model on their older platform. The new ones have it.
I currently drive a white on red 2016 GS350 F-Sport that I bought almost four years ago which I still love & is easily my best car so far, but would want to buy a 450h next if I bought another GS. Don't electric motors fill the lag before V6 kicks in? So the lag & sluggishness is just you thinking it is laggy because you hear V6 with a delay, but the car catapults immediately.
This is a great Lexus GS Hybrid to buy period. I do not understand why he is comparing it to the ES (Front Wheel Drive Car) & Electric cars as it is a hybrid with descent speed (300 HP plus) and great gas mileage (high 20s mpg and low 30s mpg). What more can you ask for?
The new ES looks better but the GS gets the edge in interior design and options. Let’s hope they don’t discontinue it, the ES can’t compete with the Mercedes E, BMW 5 series and Audi A6.
Definitely right about the title... I totally forgot about the GS. I hate the fish hook LEDs on the GS, IS, and the Lexus SUVs; separate from the headlights. The ES and LS are way better looking!!
To answer Sofyan’s question, sales took a nosedive when Lexus offered the 200t/300 as the entry level GS/RC/IS. Those entry models can not be had w/ AWD which took the value out those cars. Most Lexus buyers either go for the FWD ES or AWD sedans/crossovers.
LEXUS NEEDS TO MAKE THIS CAR A GRAND COUPE LIKE THE BMW 6 SERIES OR AUDI A5. THIS CAR SHOULD BE A STRAIGHT UP PERFORMANCE CAR WITH A COUPE LIKE SHAPE. MORE HORSEPOWER AND A TON OF FEATURES. Lexus YOU have failed this car, not the consumers. And Lexus does not even have a SUV coupe like the Mercedes, BMW, or Tesla. Lexus is reclining. And remove the over abrasive looking grill. Its too big for the car so make it smaller with bigger aggressive air ducts.
Great review. When comparing you need to remember to compare 'apples for apples'. This is a 'Hybrid' and not an electric vehicle like the Tesla and this technology has been proven over time and time again by Toyota/Lexus. You get a taste of electric vehicle but it isn't a Tesla.
Bryan Marquez Most people would say it’s TOO much red. But for those who don’t think that, a few luxury brands will offer it as a special order, and we believe GM offers it on the Corvette and Camaro.
Actually the GS450h is much quicker than GS350 from 100-200 (GS450h performance is equal to LC500h in 100-200), there is some limitation for the hybrid system if you do 0-100
Lexus should make it's hybrids performance oriented like Acura. I really don't think luxury car buyers outside of the Tesla community care about fuel economy.
You're right, the hybrid premium on this is BS considering for Toyota and Honda it's less than 2k. I know the Lexus gets bigger motors etc. but it's (too) obvious they're gouging luxury buyers. FWIW hybrids don't have a real CVT, the gears are fixed so there should not be any lag from neutral and of course the motors have no mechanical delays at all. The lag you experience is probably a computer thing (it tells the motors to go first, then the engine spools up and you get full power or something).
The lag is the momentum shift needed in the big electric motor. To accelerate the gas motor needs be spinning faster, so the electric motor has to slow down (since the wheels spin approx the same speed).
Wait, why would the large motor need to change speed? I thought the engine drove the small motor and the large motor is not directly connected to the speed of the engine at all.
The motor generator 1, the engine, and the wheels are all three connected through a planetary wheel. Motor generator 2 in on top of the engine shaft (i might have switched numbers). But if you keep any of the three shafts constant, the other two are essentially directly connected. This video explains it well: ruclips.net/video/E_xCssR8qQI/видео.html
Marijn Stollenga According to that video though, the large motor is linked to the speed of the wheels so it wouldn't change. The small motor would just apply torque to start the engine and the two would speed up/slow down together.
The thing is when cruising along the engine is at super low RPM or even off. Then when you want to accelerate the engine has to jump back to 5k rpm to get max power output and the electric motor has to correspondingly slow down (since wheel speed essentially doesn't change in the mean time). Regular engines don't have this speed up problem because they simply can't go to 0 or 1k rpm while driving which is why they are much more inefficient. Probably if you leave the sport setting on in the 450h the engine will stay at higher RPMs to speed up quicker, don't know what setting this dude is driving in.
no, it's because everything about the GS is outdated, interior, powertrain, fit and finish, handling are all from 10 years ago, look at the LS, LC both car are not that powerful in class but everything else is on top
Yes, you simply cannot expect an outdated model to perform well in its segment when there is no effort put into the redesign. Even something classic like Wrangler, G wagon, and Land Cruiser need constant model refresh and updates to survive well.
Ditching a RWD sedan for a front-driver is such a pity, but obviously not room for both. Lexus really should add AWD to the ES and a twin-turbo treatment, if they want people to get the new ES seriously. The ultra-wide rear track hints at that...
Alright guys, I really love the GS, but let’s get used to saying our goodbyes. It’s rumored that the ES AWD will be launched first in Europe in Dec. It’s only a matter of time... 1993-2019

This generation has the same issue that the 2005-13 RL had. It size prints very small compared to what it actually is.
That grill is humongous
Sean R it looks way more stylish than the Avalon. IDK what Toyota was thinking there
Alexis Bravo true 😂 though
GRILL ??? WHAT GRILL ??? lol
personally don't like the huge grill, I liked the 2013 one more
Lexus stands out on one major thing .....RELIABILITY and low maintainance costs over time !!!
Holy crap I might as well just get a GS-F slightly used.
Do manufactures have a specific reason why they don’t offer a red interior with a red exterior color?
Bryan Marquez Most people would say it’s TOO much red. But for those who don’t think that, a few luxury brands will offer it as a special order, and we believe GM offers it on the Corvette and Camaro.
Redline Reviews I was going to order the new Camry xse , I wanted the red paint with the red interior and the dealer would not do it
Redline Reviews you should review the new Mercedes s class
One time where I work I cleaned a bmw 328 blue exterior and red interior, wtf he was thinking
Bryan Marquez That’s a smart dealer. Red cars with red interiors are eye sores. A grey or white exterior with red interior is proper.
Actually the GS450h is much quicker than GS350 from 100-200 (GS450h performance is equal to LC500h in 100-200), there is some limitation for the hybrid system if you do 0-100
BTW the gear shift is ok, shift down to keep high rev and get faster gas pedal response
Lexus should make it's hybrids performance oriented like Acura. I really don't think luxury car buyers outside of the Tesla community care about fuel economy.
Which Vincero watch model are you wearing in the review?
Lexus needs to have a relook at their front end design and their infotainment system
Ashwin Krishna Coming in 2020
If the GS 450h F Sport had more power it would probably sell better.
anasim agreed, Infiniti is killing them with their hybrid power
anasim 3rd out of 3 in recent MT comparison with CTS Vsport and Audi S6.
no, it's because everything about the GS is outdated, interior, powertrain, fit and finish, handling are all from 10 years ago, look at the LS, LC both car are not that powerful in class but everything else is on top
Yuan And the new ES! The Lexus LC and LS are quick still.
Yes, you simply cannot expect an outdated model to perform well in its segment when there is no effort put into the redesign. Even something classic like Wrangler, G wagon, and Land Cruiser need constant model refresh and updates to survive well.
You nailed it.
The blue actually distinguishes it as a hybrid, not an F Sport
Ditching a RWD sedan for a front-driver is such a pity, but obviously not room for both.
Lexus really should add AWD to the ES and a twin-turbo treatment, if they want people to get the new ES seriously. The ultra-wide rear track hints at that...
Alright guys, I really love the GS, but let’s get used to saying our goodbyes. It’s rumored that the ES AWD will be launched first in Europe in Dec. It’s only a matter of time... 1993-2019
Michael Rafael the Lexus GS is discontinued in Europe, it's still available in North America, but for how long we don't know. I hope they don't get rid of it.
You can see the writing on the wall. It's only a matter of time until the GS gets the chopping block.
A used one with over 120,000 miles will still be expensive probably over 20,000 Dollars Inflation will be the Matador that finishes off the Consumer .
k super important question here: do the watches come with one touch automatic windows?
