Woeful review. This car is bulletproof. Mine has done 260,000 kms and no problems. Overtaking is amazing on country roads. I was recently on an 800km round trip and it just flies past 18 wheelers. At one point, I was doing 180 and had one hand on the wheel - the car is that composed. Not once did I feel like I was fighting the car. It is rock solid. After very long drives, I arrive feeling relaxed and calm. I'm probably going to buy another.

The Lexus GS450h was the right blend of comfort and speed (when launched it was Porsche/M5 quick - 5.2 seconds to 60). The older cars, like mine, were faster but economy was worse. I've owned BMW 5 series and 3 series but neither was as quick or reliable as the Lexus. Overtaking with the electric power boost is so safe and hysterically funny.
If you prefer your daily drive to be comfy and economical, rather than exciting but bumpy, give this comment a thumbs up...
I managed 43 mpg on a 200 mile trip up the M1 which in such a heavy car, with heavy traffic & delays, is quite an achievement for a car quicker than it's v8 stablemate. It has a detuned 3.5 litre petrol engine with two electric batteries combining to give maximum torque/power throughout the rev range. It doesn't have a CVT but instead Toyota call it an e-CVT planetary system which changes shape as you increase speed. With the power available you won't notice any drone and no gears = less moving parts to wear or go wrong.
Even the nickel hydride battery is long lasting and Toyota themselves bought back some high mileage examples to see why it was so reliable. At the last service my Lexus garage gave me 12 months battery warranty for free which included battery replacement (cultivating my loyalty) which considering its an 11 year old car demonstrated a modicum of faith... Great car and fairly unique on the road - such a shame the GS was discontinued.

What is the point of Fifth Gear??? They keep being subjective... and ignore some of the official technical specs.
1)the car gets 345 hp combined, not 286(286 come from the gas engine only)
    2) if they really care about looks and handling they should have tested the F sport as FredrickGFX suggests
    3) Vicky ... BMW... Range Rover... that is hilarious
    4) This particular CVT is one of the fastest gearboxes and it seamlessly transfer torcque and power without considerable losses... And if you floor the car at 100 km/h the tachometer would go instantly from 1k revs to 6k revs without any drama ... this is something that any DSG or sequential-shifting gearbox cannot do!

CVT's are boring as fuck and indeed feel weird since the sound of the engine doesn't match the acceleration as in a normal torque converter or dual clutch.
Also, this car weighs like a ship since it has to carry batteries and an electric motor (which is not always in use) around so a normal car with only a combustion engine is naturally going to feel more nimble. Hybrids are good at many things except being sporty and this is no exception.

Jason sums it up spot on of what this car is about. Add reliability and these cars (if been serviced by the book) as secondhand is a very good alternative to a equivalent German diesel car if you daily drive long distances. If you drive within the speed limits in normal trafic, the "CVT-experience" is none existence in this car. The engine doesn't hit peak rpm until around 80 mph, and you rarely need full throttle to do normal and safe overtakes or accelerations from on ramps to get up to speed.

  • @warren52nz
    @warren52nz 9 лет назад +17

What year is this car? I don't see it written anywhere nor did I hear them mention it. I can tell you it's not a 2007 or a 2008. I have a 2007 and it's 339 HP not 286 and it's 0-100 is 5.2 not 5.9. And it's quicker than any of its rivals. I drove a BMW 550i before getting the Lexus and it was noticeably slower.
I also got 45 mpg over a half hour period at 110 kph on the cruise control, twice. But 35 is more like the long term average if you "drive" it.
The CVT isn't a "black" mark it's brilliant! Gas engines have a sweet spot for torque and another for economy. By letting the transmission vary the ratio constantly the computer can put the engine on that spot and leave it there! It's pure genius!
I have to admit it's not much to look at but in terms of luxury, performance, economy and reliability it will run circles around any European car in its class! Make that ANY car in its class!

after over 20 years of driving Audi i switched to Lexus and never looked back !! In normal driving you do not accelerate like these testers always do ! And than the V6 with the Toyota/Lexus planetary gear cvt is very good. The trick is after a short while of high rpm´s you can lower the throttle and it still accelerates whil shfting up and engine rpm comes down. I like that very much but its not possible with these shit 4cyl. which are always under heavy load and stress and louder. Imho a Lexus deserves a V6 at minimum but the consumption is 1-2ltr above yes.... by god its worth it !!!

@@slimtimothy1 the f sport is slightly more sporty inside and out. The stability at speed is just as good as any car out there. The four wheel steering is a revelation it corners like a go kart the back wheels can lean 1.5 degrees my first time experiencing it this also my first auto but I’ve driven and Audi auto and that was horrible the Lexus auto main feature selling point is it’s smoothness hence sports luxury its no bmw killer but the sports mode really wakes the car up into a bit of a savage in a good way but as a penalty I tested the car in sports mode for an entire week which added £10 on top of my normal £33 weekly feel up 😝

i find it so stupid to compare a hybrid to a diesel. the hybrid on the lexus can barely compare to a petrol automatic, from the efficiency and reliability standpoint. Has anyone seen the HSD? it's simpler than a manual. the AC is powered electrically - so no mechanical loss when it's on, there's no alternator, no aditional starter motor, no belt for the AC and alternator. and best of all, there's no DPF. The diesel may be more efficient in urban environments, but it's definitely more complicated and less reliable. bottom line - the toyota - lexus hybrids manage efficiency and reliablilty at speeds below 70 km/h. something that the diesels don't do anymore.
another funny thing is the fear of new tech, despite diesels adopting the euro6 pollution norm. hybrids have been around for 10-15 years now? people are afraid of battery failure... hell, the hybrid is 50% more economical than a petrol engine. in 10 years the battery would have paid for itself. there are taxi drivers who got 400k km on their battery (in 10 years). What is all the fuss about?
own an auris hybrid MY2015, my first petrol after a long list of manual 'box diesels. it's excellent to thrash around in the city. i am considering a gs 450h as a weekend/holiday car... i've had fears about winter driving with that rwd and high torque, but apparently there's a bloke in russia who doesn't have any stress with snow blizzards at night when driving his gs450h.

I used to read Autocar and the other car magazines regularly. Since 1994 to be exact. I'm 46 years old now. The bias has always been towards the German cars. I bought a BMW E34 535i in 1998 based on what these journos used to say. Handling was good no doubt but reliability was not great. The car became a money pit. I've had 6 different Toyotas since then and other cars as well. If you're spending your hard earned money, buy a Toyota / Lexus. They are extremely reliable. I drove an LS400, 1998 model, in 2008. It was the smoothest car I had ever driven. Everything worked. The astonishing thing was it had 212,000 miles on the clock...

This review is typical of the British motoring press.....I suspect bought by BMW as usual.
In real world terms the Lexus is cheaper to run because:
    A. It will almost never go wrong
    B. You are less likely to get ripped off by their dealerships on servicing and extremely dodgy "free" health checks
Minor differences in fuel economy are not as big a deal as people think and of course petrol is cheaper than Diesel. (I do 40,000 Miles a year by the way) The other main differences are a great interior compared to staggeringly dull BMW. I spend most of my time in my car, not outside looking at it!
One other staggering ommission is the actual price it would cost to spec a 5 series to the level if a GS ££££££!!

Has it ever crossed your mind that - maybe - dumb drivers, just as dumb people, form a clear majority? BMW sells well for this reason only. Just as diesel cars oversell petrol or hybrids: because the crowd always goes for what makes less sense. For many, BMW ownership means a high IQ, but that may well be the opinion of those who misread flashiness for class. Lexus is for the few who understand the difference between Hollywood car races and driving in the real world.
