    • @anchored555

      Yes, many foreign retirees have entered Malaysia under the MM2H programme, and you are right, that only grants a right to reside for a fixed (renewable) term of years but not Permanent Residence. They have already changed the conditions drastically several times, and this uncertainty is what all applicants have to deal with. As for PR and citizenship in SG, these are now much harder to get, in part due to the deluge of foreigners with assets/credentials seeking to come here.

  • @anchored555
    @anchored555 6 месяцев назад +31

    All depends on what you want, where you are in life, your resources and your risk appetite. Malaysia seems great for foreign retirees. Cheaper housing and food, expenses etc. More bang for your retirement buck. But if you develop a serious health condition, would you return to SG for world class medical care or remain in Malaysia for treatment, assuming you have a choice? Also, if you have young children and want a good education and bright future for them, you likely have to opt for international schools (higher English standards) so they can go to western universities to launch their careers overseas. Over the years, many Malaysian children were sent to attend school in Singapore (many even crossing the border daily) because their parents wanted better education for them. Malaysians themselves have lamented the declining standards of English and education in recent decades, so it surprises me that the interviewee says the education standards are very good. (I guess “good” is relative, or maybe he was referring to the Chinese vernacular schools which Singapore phased out decades ago but Malaysia retained). Older Malaysians generally speak much better English than younger Malaysians who grew up under an education system that deemphasized English and prioritised the national language. (In the latest PISA rankings which rank 15 year olds on Maths, Science and Reading skills, Singapore topped the world while Malaysia ranked 55 out of 81, behind Brunei and Vietnam.) Many bright young Malaysians have also left for better prospects overseas in Singapore, Australia, UK, US and elsewhere. The Malaysian system is based on race politics that favours a certain race, and if you can accept that, fine. But many cannot, and so have emigrated elsewhere, (the Chinese population of Malaysia was 40% of the total population in 1957, but dropped to 22.8% by 2017), so I find it interesting that many PRC Chinese have been moving to Malaysia in recent years even as many Chinese Malaysians have left. Eg Peidu Mama accompany their children to attend international schools in Malaysia, which are much cheaper than those in Singapore. But most foreigners in Malaysia live in a bubble, relatively unaffected by this race policy unless they have to compete with locals for places in university or jobs, or want to get involved in local politics. So their experience of Malaysia is quite different from that of local Malaysians. However, foreigners can still be impacted in other ways. Historically, the ruling race in Malaysia has long been very sensitive/uneasy about the numbers of ethnic Chinese in Malaysia (that was why SG was expelled in 1965), so it will be interesting to see how they respond to increasing numbers of foreign Chinese in Malaysia, most of whom seem oblivious to this historical and political background. Policy flipflops are not uncommon, and can also seriously affect foreigners. For example, Forest City apartments were 70% sold to Chinese nationals. However, when Mahathir became PM again in 2018, he suddenly banned the sale of Forest City property to foreigners and declared that buying such property did not give automatic residency rights. Imagine if you had bought a unit there. 🥶So yes, property is much cheaper in Malaysia than Singapore, but the discount comes with hefty risks and little certainty because the rules can change at any time. Not everyone has the stomach/deep pockets for this. To newbie foreigners, Malaysia appears superficially similar to SG ie tropical climate, flora and fauna, close geographical proximity, racial mix, food, languages, culture, shared colonial history, etc, except they have more space and a lower cost of living (and what’s not to like about that?!). But only locals know and understand the real differences. Don’t get me wrong. I like Malaysia - but only for holidays.😊

      I lived and worked in Singapore for one year and found it suffocating - too crowded and people are not so easy going. I wouldn’t do it for the money really. My mental health is far more important than money. Also there are plenty of private hospitals which Malaysians use because we usually have private health insurance. And when the interviewee mentioned the quality of education is good - he meant the international schools.

    • @anchored555
      @anchored555 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@aquachillieActually, Luo was referring to Chinese vernacular schools, not the international schools, or national public schools when he said the education system was good. As I said earlier, what suits one may not suit another. For example, you found SG crowded and suffocating when you were here for a year, but I have lived happily in SG for 60 years, travelled extensively and increasingly value the compactness, efficiency and convenience of having important world class facilities close by eg hospitals, airport, public transport, shops, cruise centre, ferry terminals etc. If I want a break, I can get to the airport in 30 mins and choose from dozens of different destinations because Changi Airport is a major airhub. I can be in Malaysia by car in 30 mins or Indonesia by ferry in an hour. Phuket, Bali or Bangkok in about 2 hours. HK, Colombo or Manila in 3+ hours. Perth or Shenzhen in 4+hours. SG is also a cruise hub. The world is my oyster! So I’ve never been able to understand those who complain that SG is too small and boring. I think of SG as the capital city of a huge diverse travel hinterland. You may live in a bigger country and take hours or even days to get to the airport just to get out of your country. Some countries are so big (eg US) that 2/3 of their people don’t even have passports and never get to see the outside world. Now that’s boring. Anyway, to each his own. As for private hospitals, they are often not as well equipped or resourced as public hospitals here. So for medical emergencies, knowledgeable people actually prefer to go to public hospitals. I don’t believe the same is true of Malaysia.

      Well said. It’s only foreigners who still debate whether SG or Malaysia is better. The locals of both countries already knew the answer long ago. That’s why 1.13m out of the 1.86m Malaysians who emigrated overseas chose SG, while only 91,000 Singaporeans chose to live in Malaysia. At the end of the day, where you choose to live depends on your personal preferences and circumstances. No right or wrong, and what suits one may not suit another. 但是政府不照顾国民。贪污太多,种族主义。政府受惠但是不用于民。
    国立学校,国立医院,国立设施都留在基本素质而已。
    人民工资,生活压力这些一直没有进步。

Indeed Malaysia has much potential, but unfortunately struggles to rise above corruption at the highest levels, communal politics and institutionalised racism (ketuanan Melayu) against non-bumis. These are aspects of Malaysian society that most foreigners don’t see because they live in their own insulated parallel universe. Unless they happen to buy property or come under the MM2H programme, that are affected by policy flipflops.
