Disclaimer - don't take a wire brush to your own car(!) I hadn't spotted it at the time but its clear to see that the deepest part of the scratch is still slightly visible during the self-healing test at the end of the episode. Whilst paint protection film will go a long way to protect your paint and keep a swirl-free and scratch-free finish, it doesn't protect against idiots with wire brush drill attachements! Still mighty impressive
(since filming and watching the footage back, i've examined the area several times and I can't see any marks - result)
My final thoughts - very impressive and I wish I'd got on the PPF train sooner!
Great insight onto PPF, smart installation Jim glad you're enjoying it. Pls don't do the wire brush thing again, that physically hurt!
That's my evening viewing sorted, will edit my post after watching!
Edited post-viewing - until your recent video with the blue M5, I didn't know full PPF-ing was a thing. I thought key, exposed points on a car were the recipient of the film such as bumper corners, wing mirrors etc. I've been enlightened and look forward to seeing part 3!
Thanks Jim
I think of all the detailers and PPF installers on RUclips this guy is by far the most skilled and knowledgeable. He's the best!
Hi Glenn, whilst I appreciate your comment, I figured I'd best just drop in quickly.. With regards to the ppf, I've only been installing film for a month. 5-6 weeks max and it's been on/off at that. Obviously, it would be nice to bring the knowledge and skills up to top tier stuff eventually but that is going to take years to master and perfect (like my detailing, has taken 10+ years) I'm very happy with the install on my Touring but I have to say, there are hundreds of guys & girls out there with waaaaay more skills in this department then me! Thanks for your support - here's to the next 12/24 months!
Great content as always Jim and the attention to detail is on another level.
Welcome to the world of PPF - Definitely a massive learning curve but it's truly rewarding and is a massive leap in detailing!
Jim, you’re my hero for being so thorough on your interior. I can only imagine what’s sitting under my rear bench right now.
Amazing! For a person that has created an incredible approach to detailing a car and to adopt a new system overnight and execute it flawlessly is extraordinary. Well done James!
No, this is wrong. Please come to China to learn. Cutting-edge technology, bare and excessive control knives are not perfect!
The engraving table needs to be perfectly controlled to understand GSWF technical training.
Great job Jim! Beamer is looking good. PPF sure seems like a messy and slippery process. Congrats on your new skill and service you can provide your customers Take care.
Thank you again Bryan! I have been very impressed with the film so far. Starting a big project this week on a yellow Italian. Full car coverage! Watch this space. Cheers!
I love it 🤣
I couldn't of just put a wire brush over freshly detailed paintwork, think I would of chosen a smaller panel to try it on first.🤣
Great work as always.👍
Great work Jim! The car looks great. I am pretty sure you will be getting a lot of business for ppf. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Really enjoyed watching you work on your own car, your a brave chap putting a wire brush to the PPF though Jim.
Hi Jim! Fantastic to see your work on the F31, it looks absolutely stunning with the protection added, very impressive. Stunning car 😉
Love watching as always Jim, thank you. Is it me, or does the PPF film give a slightly more hazy reflection than just corrected paint? That said, worth it for the protection value.
Question; I guess the PPF cutting machine has the vast majority of modern cars in its database. How far back / does it include / can older modern classics or indeed classics be catered for?
For example, a Mk2 VW Scirocco... think you knew where that was going! 😄
Good to see you enjoying the process, you clearly enjoy the results of your labours!
Jim so glad to see you getting into PPF, you were a big inspiration to my business when we first went full time, and I even called and asked for some advice once! Quick tip for your squeegeeing, coat the edges of your squeegee, it will make the glide much more smoothly, and help minimise the scratches, along with spraying slip on top of the film. Also BMW door handles are super easy to remove, pull them out for the doors. The M Badges come up super easy too, no software has them in the patterns, so just pull them off and re-tape them when done!
Cheers, Saad
Lovely 😍
Is that F31 lowered? Doesn't look standard x-drive height? EDIT: Just heard you have Eibach Sports on it, it has spacers too yes???
How much would it cost to PPF an F30, same as yours a 2017 shaddow 335d?
Great video. I’m not sure what you can charge in your area, but I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I paid £10,000 to get my 2022 G82 M4 full STek PPF and Feynlab ceramic. Full polish, car was delivery miles, and I brought it to the detailer with all of the factory plastics and white tape masking on the hood and handles. I’ll tell you if you want to offer this on the high end cars, cutting out the emblems and door handles is going to be a no-go. I had badges removed, and since they’re one time use, they were all reordered. Factor this into the cost when quoting the job. Thumbnail spoiler removed to facilitate the boot being PPFd in one piece. The spoiler PPFd and then reinstalled. Door handles removed so no cookie cutter door cup cutouts. Wheels off and polished, ceramic. Carbon ceramic brake calipers ceramic coated, outer windscreen, STek DynoFlex. 9,500 miles later, no issues, no delaminating, no PPF peeling back. It’s been flawless. But I paid for it.
Great video as always! I'm planing to include the PPF in the future as well. One question ... do you mind sharing what PPF cutting machine are you using? Thanks! 😊
31:16 🫣😱 Man, that’s brave! I almost lost my lunch watching that. Amazing work on the PPF though. Well done. 👏🏼❤️
This was very enjoyable to watch. Wish you weren't clear across the friggin pond. My '23 JCW Clubman is sitting in Southampton at this moment waiting for a ship. Should have had it delivered to you first.
Hi Jim, how you feeling about the rear light clusters now? I recently acquired an almost identical f13 335d to yours (unfortunately without that beautiful interior color) and have been considering that light mod for my car. you mentioned you weren’t yet convinced? Happy to swap my stock light cluster if your interested?
Simply stunning Results, keep them coming . With the addition of PPF as a package. will there be an Jim 2.0 helper. Or part timer. Or intern, ❤
That little pressurized canister you have gym that you’re using for slip solution for that thing would be perfect to put my ONR in or my N 914!
Must say fab edit on these 2 vids Jim...the choice of music was Brill. 👍🏻 love the interior of your car .
I didn’t see any hot water in a spray bottle. That will be your best friend for bulking mirrors and edges. Hardest car I have done to date was a full body Hummer H2. The roof is insane because of the rise and the channels on top of the rise. And the faux snorkel caps on the front. Best part is no patterns for most of the vehicle so it is all bulked. The doors are insane because of the paint going all the way around the windows and then recessing in. Had to remove the front windows to remove the mirror on the front doors. And the upper rear quarter panel, that was a unpleasant woman. All the “popsicle” shaped vents on the front windscreen cowel had to be trimmed out by hand. If anyone wants one done we charge $15k USD and don’t even really want to muck with it at that price haha.
I can't believe you actually went and did it. I thought it was a joke but when you went in, I had witnessed an atrocity, though thankfully on "the rubber". Interesting results though!
Take a moment to clean out your sunroof drains, having water leak into the boot could have really damaged all the electrical modules in the boot of my 535d recently following the non return rubber drain valve filling with junk. Great video, love the content 👌
An old guy from the trade told me to use petrol to remove tar and contaminates. Obviously it will probably strip all protection back to lacquer, but is there any reason apart from obvious safety that this trick shouldn't be used?
liked the long hour videos better jim! gonna miss those if you choose to move forward with this kinda concept. keep up the good work tho. you've inspired me to get into detail. cant thank you enough.
Also, why not ppf the whole car? I mean you’re nearly halfway done with it. Then it can be far better protected and it can’t be somewhat neglected compared to caring for a coating.
Brilliant Jim , there's no end to your talents , mind blown again . Keep it up 💯 .
Another gd vid Jim cpl of quick questions where do u get your nano mf pads from and will you be selling ppf or just for ure own application
Imagine having a pro detailer do your film and not some minimum wage wrap junkie at your local industrial estate body shop!
Maybe it's just me but the seam line by the M badge is just ugly, also removing the door handles is very simple on this car and I think it would've made the install cleaner hiding the edges beneath the door handles.
Biased or not, that is a beautiful looking estate for sure. And PPF is the best invention that ever happened to carguys.
Always a great day when WD posts
I would love to know what products you are using, as I have a similar car. Any chance of a product list?
I put a bumper protector on this morning though I was all over it with my felt squeegee and fast glass to slide it about. Then I saw this.
Hi Jim I love your videos and your work I've been a subscriber for several years but sorry I'm not a PPF fan
This is much more watchable in separate episodes than one whole chunk. Who has time to watch one and a half hours of detailing in one go? Not me. Thanks Jim.
Hiya , what's your process to avoid rusty rotors after washing the car?
Happy holidays!
always admiring your work 👍. Do you think that the ppf is the mandatory option for a detailer.
Easy Jim, nice to see you chose to go down the PPF route, was it our chat that perhaps persuaded you by any chance? 😉
Dear Jim, with all due respect, it does hurt my soul that you place plastic bottles on freshly polished surfaces of the car.
congradulation on your great video. Can you please tell me what kind of head light you use ?
Some day some poor bastard will have to take that crap off this car. May God have mercy on his soul
I had the same issue with my F30, BMW suggested fix was a new fuel tank…
Installing PPF is an art form... and you have mastered that!
Of all the auto detailing channels WhiteDetails is my favorite. You give me what I love about detailing and that's getting to look at the car from all the angles, appreciate the textures of the materials, the reflections, and body lines from a variety of distances and light conditions. Like the grill of a Bentley, or carpet pile/nap in an Aston Martin. I like that you stick to nice cars I want to see, nothing rundown or a waste of effort. Also that you take the time to show the finished product. Thank you for many years of amazing work.
Yes, his detailing and production skills combined are at the top of the industry, bar none.
I’ll guarantee you it fails at the emblem at 19:18. 2 years tops.
Really nice car 😮 the interior and exterior options are spot on.
You and alan am details done this course together i bet stunning work but
How much for front end PPF on a BMW f90 M5 2019
Hi Jim. So how much does it cost to PPF the front of a car ?. I have an old classic SAAB 9000 Aero which is having a full respray in a few weeks time. So it makes sense to get it protected once the paint has had time to harden and outgas.
Depends on shop and product used. I had a new Corvette done, $3600, a new CX-5 also done, $2,400. XPEL PPF.
thinking of doing this myself as well, good to see someone else at home doing it!
A nice addition to your portfolio, it looks outstanding.
Amazing stuff Jim - as always! 😊
Great job, the car looks amezing 👍
White details : the conessiours choice of detailer
That PPF cutter is really cool!😮😊
Love the car nothing like a 35d ❤️
Great video, some observations that I’ve taken away:
- Don’t scratch your cars PPF with a wire brush 👍🏼
- Jim said the word condom 😂
- why is no one talking about the fact Jim used a scraper on the bonnet 😮 gave me chills
- Finally, there was no need for the slo-mo of the pillar coupled with the music, very seductive. But I’m here for it 😆
All seriousness, a great video 👏🏼 a question I thought of was if you would consider offering as a service, putting PPF on the gloss black for interiors?
Stunning Motor Jim, glad to see you back in a Beemer again. Slightly biased having a 2016 LCI F31 335d Tourer myself. Astounds me sometimes with spec choices (I.E missing pro nav). What colour is the interior, is it cognac? Looks like the rear wheels especially have spacers as well do they? How does it ride on the lowered springs? Does it have adaptive or fixed dampers? Got Schnitzer springs for mine but not fitted yet
Mmmm, I wonder if Jim has found a way of cloning himself? He seemed super busy doing the detailing, now doing the PPF as well, there must be more than one of him. :)
Guessing, maybe he will be cutting back on the detailing and doing more PPF, presumably it is more profitable. Obviously there is a large initial investment/outlay. Best wishes
Jim, I have watched both parts of this journey you are on with your new ride, and I gotta say, I really like it. It’s a beautiful car and I would be very proud of it. 👊And as a PS, PLEASE don’t do that thing with the wire brush. My anxiety can’t take it.😅
Amazing job as always. I like the new addition to the WD family. I hope you have a good work/life balance though. Please get an assistant!! It'll make the PPF application so much easier for you, if you have a good helper, like Terry. And a bit of company would be nice too, as long as it's the right person.
Here's hoping for no3. Cracking job and blogs. Really enjoyed and that PPF nuts! Is there something similar for the windscreen? Great to watch 👍
Spectacular, amazing job you’ve done there, wire brush had me cringing, you’ve added another awesome service to your customers
I have had two BMW cars from 2020 of mine PPF'ed with XPEL. What I have noticed is that especially the edges on the front bumper, front sides and rocker panels really need extra heat and drying otherwise tiny small dirt particles will start to get trapped when the film is newly installed and fresh. So make sure to let it dry and use the heat gun for additional hours than the recommended time I would say. The hardest part with PPF I find when I have installed small pieces on my own, nothing big is the delicate feeling to cut through with the knife steady and straight, that is a skill you can practice to really get top notch results where knife is needed.
Jim please get into the habit of sliding your blade back in after a cut so it’s muscle memory. At 15:15 you were pulling ppf with an extended blade and a slip could get nasty quickly! Nice job on the install!
I heard you mention Eric from Drive Protected on a recent podcast I listened to. He’s driving in from Canada this weekend to train me here at the shop. It’s the second time I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from him. He’s an incredible PPF installer and even better man to be honest and has helped me a lot in my PPF journey. I use Suntek here at the shop as well and it was really awesome hearing someone (You of course) that I’ve looked up to over the years speak of someone I personally have worked with. Thank you for all of the great content and I can’t wait to see where this takes your projects in the future! God Bless!
Excellent work, always a joy watching your videos. Where did you get the vinyl template for the plotter ?
Superb job Mr White 👏 its a very nice looking car the colour is very nice and forgiving, I wish I could get my five series to that standard it is also mineral grey. Great insight into your new line of work, your a talented man also great series of videos to show the improvements on your new support vehicle 👏 keep the videos coming. Thanks Jim 👍
Car is looking awesome Jim! Question regarding the PPF over stone chips - does it just go over them nicely? does it end up bubbling? do you get issues with laying it over existing stone chips etc?
I have seen 2022 cars with fuel level faults. usually when you brim them the level sensors just get stuck at the top. He probarbly caused the issue by being generous. Such a nice car over all !!
Hi Jim, amazing car and results! Are you considering an employee at the moment like when you had Terry by your side? Maybe you can film more and work may be a bit less lonely.
I'm surprised that PPF hasn't been popular in the UK before as I've had that fitted to all my new cars for the last 8 years in Australia. It really is a great product and saves the high impact sections on the vehicle as we travel thousands of KM's in the outback and confronting road trains ( Lorries towing two to three trailers at once). Great video as usual.
Brave with the wirebrush 😅😮
I loved watching this about ur own car , the ppf is very impressive! Ive just had it fitted to my motorbike👍 i cant wait for part 3 ! And any other videos u post .
Hi Jim
Another great video..
I admire your attention to detail..
The car looks fantastic
great video, nice upgrade from the Jag. Whats your experience with the newer BMW steering wheels ? Does the paint wear off and is it ok or not to clean them?
Looking great Jim love it
Top level workmanship again Jim . Stunning BMW you got there . Such a good idea to protect the paint with PPF
You just keep amazing us every time. Don’t think I would have made it through lockdown with out you mate.
Awesome job Jim.
Definitely a pro fit and not for the DIY man. 😎👌😊👍💯
fabulous video. loved it
You trying to scratch your own ppf had me seriously laughing out loud 😂😂 Thanks for another top quality video 👍
The squeegee is back 🤣🤣 I understand it is a necessary tool. Fantastic episode and great to see you grow and develop the business. Pleasure to have episodes so close together. Keep up the great work
Looks great. Job well done. Even though it is illegal here in Canada I would still tint those two front side windows to match the rears (or one shade lighter). It looks so much better to have the tint the same on all windows (I never tint my windscreens though)
Excellent video once again Jim. Really loving the new content and more so the new wagon, it’s a great spec and it’s nice to see you happy mate. Well done, part 3 come on 🙏🏻😊
Great video Jim, yes we defo need part 3 or perhaps an ongoing series of the maintenance of impressively good work on the BMW
Great vid as always, you are the best. Let us know about maintenance of it, is it worth ceramic coating it or pointless ?
Does anyone know what is the make of the headlight that Jim used?
Scangrip
I can’t even deploy sellotape without getting it tangled. Nice work.
Every time I watch Jim detail a car, I realize the gap between an amatuer and a professional is larger than I imagined.
Impressive how a proper detail can take an otherwise mundane car to being very desirable. Top work.
My favourite detailing channel by far. Awesome car too!
Love your obsession with the minutia, not only satisfying to watch, but instructive as always.
“Swirls - no swirls”😅😂
