    Once my lyft driver was Deaf and I had lovely conversations with him in ASL at all the red lights (This was in DC so there were a ton) and it was great. He was an awesome driver. Got 5 stars from me! What a weird thing for people to assume...

    I can never hear emegerency vehicles, But the sirens have the bright lights, just yesterday I saw the lights and I pulled over for the ambulence to go by. I have eyes, I can use my eyes. When I took my license test, they didn't mind me being deaf. Honestly, for many things in life, you don't really need hearing. :)

      brickzzzzzzz lol I can't see the lights in the daytime but I usually see everyone else pulling over, so I just follow suit

      I never hear emergency vehicles either, but I am almost always the very first person to pull over. Unfortunately, other people who rely on their ears, don't hear or see the emergency vehicle and fly past me blaring their horns and getting all angry because I pulled over. Then not even a minute later they realize there's an emergency vehicle and finally pull over. But by then, the emergency vehicle has had to slow down/or stop just to get past them. It's ridiculous.

    Ahh! Love to you and your sister! Awesome that you brought her in for this vid! And I love how well done the vid is! You CRUSHED THE MYTH! 😃
    I remember back when my hearing started to really go bad, one of the first things I looked into was if I'd still be able to drive because, in my naiveté, I DIDN'T KNOW! Thank you for not only busting the myth, but also making it entertaining! You're the best! ❤

    FYI...even deaf people that only communicate in sign language and don't speak can drive too. Using your voice isn't a requirement on the drivers test.

    My mom has known sign language for many years, (she is hearing) even taught it to me. I am not so fluent in it now, but know a lot of the basics. When I was younger my mom and I actually had friends in two different places that were deaf. My mom was always able to communicate so easily with them. I remember they both could drive just fine without any issues. I think it is great you spreading awareness to these topics. I found you through Drew Lynch. I think there are so many things people do not understand and you shed light on them. :) I am so happy I found your channel.

    This is the best "how can deaf people drive?!" video yet. A++++++
    Like another commenter mentioned, when there is an emergency vehicle behind you, you're gonna notice the cars in front of you moving to the side and deaf people aren't going to think, "Ooh, they're making room for me to pass. Sweet!" And whenever an accident happens, the excuse is usually "I didn't see ______" And not "I didn't hear ______"
    I'm a deaf person who cannot drive just because I never pursued my full license but because of the common misconception, I have to explain that the reason I don't have my driver's license is not because I can't hear.
    I'm a cyclist though so I do have to share the road with hearies who cannot hear my bicycle.

    I don’t usually comment but I love your videos. Watching you with your sister was a lot of fun (to be honest, at first I thought you duplicated yourself into a character as you look so similar). One thing, these days cars are so sound proof that sirens can be hard to hear even for the hearing. Definitely a visual task! Thanks for all your videos, they make me think.

    I just saw the rikki crossover, and I have to say that I am a fan of you now. And I think I have become a better driver now that I am hoh. I get less distracted. Studies have shown that deaf people are better drivers. I want my deaf/hoh discount on my insurance.
    And I have to add that people can be blasting music and not hear things around them like deaf people. My radio volume has increased 20 dbls over the last year and change. My comfort level on the radio is like 10 dbls from max.
    Also how do we know when to move over for emergency vehicles? How about when we see everyone else moves over we get the clue!!!!! That is a big tell. I notice that before everything else.

    Love the video! You and your sister are too funny! I am hearing and I think it's hilarious that you have to address this subject. My answer would be that same if you asked..Can hearing people drive? Yes if they can pass the drivers test, or they don't lose their car keys...or get their car impounded. There are hearing people that can't driving. Driving isn't related to hearing.. it's related to brain function and motor skills. Good video!

    I like how law and order SVU actually shows this in a episode, maybe more people will learn that deaf people can drive by it and this cute video. Unfortunately this guy was the victim of a bump and rob and got shot for his car and thrown in the river but they were able to identify him by his implant. Still shows that deaf people can drive.

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +1

      Elyse's Life yes, This is assuming you are taking up ASL, learn the ABC's first then go look up bill vicars on RUclips and start with lesson one. Try to do one video a week then practice using those words you learned by signing them as you say them or signing it while someone else says them. This keeps you using the language so you memorize it better. Happy signing 😊

    I never thought about it until I got to college until I saw a group of deaf students get in their cars and drive away. I imagined they would have problems telling if something on their car is breaking, and I have since verified that to be true now that my hearing has got worse.

  • @josephinemcmahon7286

    Deaf people CAN drive. I am deaf and drive my car, no way do I allow anyone to take away my independence. HOWEVER, ambulances are a big concern for me as while I can HEAR them, unless I SEE them, I don't know what DIRECTION the sound is coming from. One day it wasn't until that ambulance was on my tail that I could see that I needed to move fast - STRESSFUL!!! So hearing ambulances IS problematic and I understand hearing people's concern about that!

  • @alexysautumnelf

    You don't have to take a hearing test, but they DO require a vision test. So, you don't have to hear, but you do obviously have to see.

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад

      I watch for lights a lot too! I also noticed that I pay attention to reflections in other cars if that makes sense. Like if I am crossing a road, I'll check the side of cars further down the road to see if there is any reflection of an oncoming car coming my way.

    In case you wonder why people say that, deaf people can DEFINITELY drive, it's just harder sometimes. When you drive near train tracks, you may not hear the bells and some who are completely deaf may not hear the roar of the train, but the deaf will know the train is coming because of flashing lights and the red and white cross things going lower. So you can definitely drive, it's just harder.

    Is it real that people listen for cars coming around them instead of looking? That doesn't sound real at all...lol.
    Serious question, from a dhh chick who's terrified of this driving scenario...what do you do at railroad tracks, across 55mph highways where you can't slow down to stop and look, but they don't have the little rails to go down? How do you know there's no train? Lol it's a silly fear I have. But it's there.
    I love your videos as always! 😊

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад

      Hannah Leigh lol personally I'd keep an eye out for lights and if I'm really not sure if a train is coming I'd slow down anyways for my safety if I think one might be coming. But train lights always give you the heads up before hand when the train is coming so it gives you enough time to stop. At least that's my experience with them.

  • @christopherclayton7390

    I never had doubts someone who's deaf couldn't drive but my main question is what if someone is honking at you or something like that.... that you may need to hear for whatever reason? I guess it's not often and a very situational thing but still curious about it. I think someone should make a device that reacts when it hears a horn. Like maybe if someone honks it flashes a light in the car or maybe gently vibrates the seat or something.

    Also I'm learning ASL and it's hard because my friends always ask me why would u want to learn that if you can talk and I say to better communicate with people who can relate to my problems but it's very hard to find a friend who is as dedicated to learning ASL as I am do u have any advise on how to communicate with my friends so that they understand that I am still the same person just that it's a little bit different because they don't understand that it's important to me to be involved in the H.O.H. community and to learn ASL

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +1

      Again you can show them these videos if you want to. Part of the reason I made these videos was to educate people I know and others about what it is like to be in my shoes. I think that is the biggest reason why people don't understand is because they haven't experienced it themselves. It helps to share your own experiences with them like you might speak and they can hear you perfect but do you hear them perfect? When it comes to ASL I feel like my reason I learn it is because I want that equal access to communication. I want to be able to understand something 100% Not sure if it is the same for you but I think the more you talk about your experiences with them, then maybe they will start to learn more about what it is like being you.

    Hey Jessica how did you get your hearing aids? Insurance doesn’t cover a hearing aid for me and and they are expensive out of pocket. I was thinking about calling the vocational rehabilitation center near me and seeing if they can help

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +1

      So I lucked out and worked for a place for 3-4 years where they put money aside for me for any medical expenses and by the time I left that job I had enough money to cover my hearing aids. Not sure if I'll have enough money next time I need new one though. I heard about a department of rehabilitation center here that helps with getting hearing aids. So I think you are on the right track with asking them if they can help.

    Hey Jessica I have left comments on your hearing aid videos cuz I recently got hearing aids and I'm adjusting pretty quickly the only thing is that it's kinda hard to adjust in my school life one of my teachers refuses to add captions or give me a manuscript so it's extremely hard for me to hear what they are saying or if we are watching a video it is hard to understand I have to put two and two together and deal with what I get when I asked my teacher said oh um the packet I give u kinda sums up the idea of the video but I don't think it's quite fair that the rest of the kids in my class might be getting some details that I'm not so I was wondering if you had any advise on how to educate my teachers and peers that just because I have hearing aids does not mean I can hear 100% clearly and that yes I want to be treated normally but there are some needs that I need

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney
      @JessicaFloresLimeMoney  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Ana!
      Hope you are well! GURRR not putting captions on education videos annoys me. Do you mind me asking where you are located maybe they are required by law to do that for you. I'll look into it. In the mean while, you could have them watch my recent video about hearing aids or captions if they are open to watching it. Maybe the principle would be open to watching it? If not you could take parts of what I said and mention it to them about what it is like and describe that to them if you are comfortable doing that.

    • @JessicaFloresLimeMoney

      Good question! I told the person testing me to point where they wanted me to turn or else I wouldn't know what to do. So that is what they did. Worked for me! Also, I know that for the written test they have ASL signed versions of the written test for those who want to take the written test in ASL can. I'm sure they get interpreters for the test if you need it too.

    I usually end up seeing the cars pulling over and then I'll look in my mirrors and see the sirens incoming. Then I pull over. It's the same idea as if a person is playing the radio in the car super loud and the sirens are coming how they gonna know? Same concept. My best friend doesn't drive because she's got serious anxiety issues which is understandable, so she catches the bus. My sister in law is NOT deaf and she has anxiety also and does NOT catch the bus. She is lame. She needs to learn to be independent.

      Good question! Forgot to include that in the video. When it comes to honking, in America, usually people get honked at because you're not paying attention to something. But if you are always scanning the mirrors you would eventually at some point glance in the rear mirror to see the reaction of the driver behind you. Their reaction will tell if they are honking since they usually do this "common move" gesture or if something's wrong they will wave to get your attention. At night time though, people tend to use their high beems more than actually honk to tell you something is going on. But bottom line, if a person just pays attention to road and what's going on the front and back of them, they'll be able to figure out if someone honks. Hope that answers your question!
