    One quick comment. As I was editing this together I noticed that this black version is very reflective. So that's something I'll be looking at more when I get to the final review. Especially how it might compare to other glossy black watches.

    I'm wearing my Mako 2 as I watch this and it is one I will never sell. It was the first diver I bought, I paid 115.00 USD on Amazon and I simply love it. I've wanted to buy a nicer bracelet but the stock one is super comfortable. I like Orients products.

    I have many Orient Star watches, and is so sad and anoying the pictures and videos cant make justice of the beauty and impressive finishing of all, I know people will say "thats too much for an Orient" but im sure this watch worth every dollar, the finishing looks superb, the lume should be as amazing as the first diver (one of the best in the market) and the green dial is just stunning. People you should begin to treat and value Orient Star as they deserve, around the same cstegory as Tissot, Hamilton, Longines, Laco... How many more times they have to prove they do amazing well done watches?

    You instantly went up 100 notches in my book for the Glock cleaning pad or whatever that is. Love it! Awesome diver too, Orient is a great value brand that actually delivers and performs QC.

    The new Orient Star diver is just beautiful! I own an Orient Star Sports Outdoor pvd w/ grey dial and it's a keeper... absolutely bulletproof! I'm very impressed with the brand and have wanted one of their dive watches.
    However well executed, the 43mm size of the other OS diver has kept me from purchasing one. My Seiko Williard and Monster already fill the larger diver slots in my collection.
    The LE version of the OS 1964 is nice but is too much like the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 53 Skin that I already own.
    I really love the classic monochrome look of this piece, it has a refined elegance to it. The finishing looks beautiful and the 41mm size is just about perfect. I've been eyeballing the black-dialed Longines Hydroconquest 41mm and this looks like a very attractive alternative.
    I look forward to your full review, thanks!

      @@jjsifo1 Yes, they really make great watches. Of course mine has the old non handwinding shake to wake. Lol. Yours has the newer hacking and handwinding movement, I'm sure. But the old XL is very reliable. I got mine back around 2009 I think or maybe a bit later. Still 12 or 13 years with no problems. I even brought it for a service a few years ago and the watchmaker said, it didn't need one, but he changed the gaskets and re-lubricated it. Good for another 13 years. It might last longer than me!

    I go to Japan often, Orient watches are very popular and are high quality. It's just a smaller less known brand that's why you don't see everyone talking about them. They have amazing craftsmanship and will last a lifetime expecialy the star series. This will be my next watch definitely a classic bond looking style.

    Looks good, Shane. But I couldn't see the power reserve hand,... Was it the lighting?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Год назад

      It's the lighting. It's a very thin silver hand, so it was just reflecting the darkroom back at the camera. In normal lighting conditions is easier to pick up. One interesting thing is that this is the first Orient Star I've seen where the power reserve wasn't recessed with a grooved texture. It's just printed directly on the glossy black mirror dial, making it much more subtle.

    • @Rick-ve5lx

    Really pretty watch but the price might be a bit high. Citizen just released the titanium fujitsubo diver with very similar styling and specs and that costs around 700 dolars with the bracelet.
    This watch sits right in the middle of the newly released citizen and the seiko 62mas reissue. I think that is a tough position to be in for a watch because you can pay a bit less and get the citizen or pay a bit more and get the 62 mas.

    IMHO, the RE-AU0602E has the much better dial colour.
    =quote=This green version is is a matte green dial with a matching matte green bezel surface. The green gradation on the dial is inspired by the Ryusendo Cave in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, thought by some to be the most beautiful and mysterious limestone cavern in the world. This model reflects the spirit of the divers who dive deep into the underground lakes to survey the cave and unlock its mysteries.=unquote=

  • @MJFallout
    @MJFallout Год назад

    Huh, I feel that could be a $400 Vostok if Vostok ever decided to make a $400 model. It's because of the bracelet style, and how it's so distinctly -roughly- contrastfully fitted,
    the unconventional retro looking dial, where also everything is printed,
    the simple, no nonsense knurling on the crown also,
    the bezel insert also, it just being a bit understated.
    And I'm not saying that to diss either of these brands. Vostok has its own charme and place in the watch world.

      Orient Star is the higher-up brand of Orient. Kind of like Grand Seiko is for Seiko, but not near the same quality level as that.
      Technically they are separate companies. With Seiko Watches is owned by The Seiko Holdings Corporation, and Orient Is owned by The Seiko Epson Corporation. But they are connected overall by the larger Seiko Group. Honestly how it all works is a little confusing.

      For years I've thought of the Submariner as the 1911 of the watch world. It's an older iconic classic that multiple companies took inspiration from and have made their own versions of. To the point, you could almost say a Subby is a type of dive watch and not just a single watch.
      Just like with the 1911. Colt is the one that created it, but these days most companies have their own versions of it. So if someone says they have a 1911, you know what kind it is, but you usually ask what brand.

      Eventually, I'll do a comparison video, but it will be a while out. That said... They are close, but I think the Seiko has a slight edge in terms of quality. Especially with the case and bracelet having Seiko's Diashield coating applied.
      Personally, I like the MMR's case design better, as well as the handset. The Orient's are a tad flat. Plus you have 70hrs of power over 50.
      Although there are some things the Orient does better. Better lume. More comfortable thanks to a smaller case. As well as the Power Reserve meter, which the Seiko doesn't have at all.

    Hey sean.
    Can you answer my question please. I really want this dive watch. I have a offer to trade in a watch towards getting this dive watch from orient. I have the orient star heritage white dial. Is this dive watch worth trading in my star dress watch?. I really like an adore my heritage. But at the same time i really want this flagship dive watch from orient. What are your thoughts?.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Год назад +1

      That's maybe a tricky decision. Short version though, if you adore your heritage, don't trade it in. Or at least I wouldn't.
      I'm still a few weeks out from a full review. I've worn it enough that I know what I'm going to say, but I have other videos I have to do first, like Lume-O-Ween.
      The 1964 is good, the black dial is extremely refelctive, but overall it's a good watch. Lume is good, the build is good, and the power reserve is very subtle so it has a very clean look. So it's good for someone who wants a dressy diver, something a bit retro. Or someone who may want a Submariner that isn't an homage.
      Where things get complicated is in terms of value. Typically with Orient and Orient Star, every watch I see punches way above its price. Where I feel like it could stand on its own against watches that cost 2x as much. This is the first time I've had one that I don't feel that way.
      Comparing it to my Seiko MMR (which has about the same MSRP), id say they are about the same in terms of value. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but value they are on par. So the 1964 is still an ok buy, but it's not what you typically expect from the brand. Or at least that's how I feel.
      Anyway... long story short it's good, but I wouldn't risk trading something you absolutely love for it.
      Hope that helps. Feel free to ask me any more questions.

      @@RelativeTime You have answered my question. An my thoughts. I will not be trading in my heritage. Too be honest, i go an back an fourth on thinking if i really want this diver from orient. Before i thought i did. Now, i think i dont have to have it. I think the star diver pepsi bezel diver you have is just as good as this 2nd edition. Id love to have the all blue version. But they are getting scarce an alot pricier these days. After reading your comment i made my mind up. Also, i think the 1st edition is the much better watch out of the 2. But thats impossible to find. You still have a great watch. But ill be keeping my heritage.

      @@RelativeTime Indeed, yes. I have three Orient/Orient Star watches, and i was really excited to get a look at the ‘64 V2, but it just didn’t seem to look as good in the flesh. I know it’s usually the other way around, but it just didn’t wind my main spring.

    i dislike the approx. 2 year ago release of this newer orient diver (should be same as your video here that pepsi bezel one) since it has too many roundish design markers on BOTH the bezel and dial ; and at 43mm it is abit too LARGE to be a daily wear piece , of course for professional diver , larger at 42 to 45mm is nothing wrong functional wise . the newer editions with more regular rectangular markers looks much better , especially this smaller case width one discussed here.

    Nice video, but I strongly disagree with you that the Orient Star is the best watch Orient ever made because the 300 meter Orient Saturation Diver watches far exceed the quality standards as it was in the 1960's. Please check it out for yourself and perhaps this could be new content for another video. Cheers.

      Like all Orient Stars, prices on the grey market flucutate wildly, so you have to really shop and look. Although MSRP is 140,000 yen, about $951 USD right now.
      I'd have to go back and look, but I probably forgot to mention it in the video. It's an unboxing, so most of it is off the cuff and unplaned. At least compared to my reviews.

    Can you please compare it with the Trinton with power reserve.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Год назад

      The original Triton? I think you can still find some, but they have been discontinued and replaced with the non power reserve version. Suposedly Orient wanted the power reserve to be a "Orient Star" exclusive feature.
      From what I remeber it was the older movement they used to use in most orient stars. The 40N5A. I think it's pretty simmilar, the major difference with the newer F6N47 is a longer power reserve. 40 hr vs. 50 hr.

  • @Andrew.W75
    @Andrew.W75 Год назад

    No one seems to have mentioned it here, but for me the power reserve ruins the dial design, the original looks much nicer!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Год назад +1

      A few people have. It's fairly polarizing. Some love it ( I do ), and some hate it. Although in this case, it's also Orient Star's "thing". At this point, it's their signature feature, as they have it in almost every Orient Star watch.
      That said, this is probably the most subtle implementation I've seen from Orient with it. You can see what I mean when you look at the older diver compared to the 1964.

      @@RelativeTime Thanks for taking the time to reply, I'm just not a fan of power reserve complications on automatic watches. They make more sense to me on a manually wound watch along with a longer power reserve.

    Prefer the look of the V1, the second version looks a little cheap and dated to my eyes. I am not sure why you'd take this over the 62mas options from Seiko though, unless you're a very devout Orient fan. All those polished surfaces on the side and will be a scratch magnet and not hidden like that caseback. It would be acceptable on a dress watch but this is going for a tool vibe?
