Indeed it is well worth a visit Trev. The Transport Centre is near the main headquarters of the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) and Rushcliffe Park so plenty to do. Thanks for watching - Hayden.

Thanks Nathan. Had a look at the website, indeed sounds very interesting and good that they have managed to source a German narrow gauge engine.

My dad occasionally drove Barton’s to Glasgow. Think the route originated in Corby

Did you notice the slogan on the front of the Barton's Leyland "Parcels Carried"? This was a wonderful service and would be considered revolutionary today. Barton had a parcels agent in every town, suburb and village on its network. They were not necessarily at a bus stop. If you had a parcel or package to be sent you would take it to one of Barton 's bus stations, pay the charge and it would be on the next bus. If taken to an agent, he would then telephone Barton s to advise them there was a parcel to collect (local calls were free then) and be told which bus would do this. The driver would be instructed to stop and collect . A quick toot on the horn and out came the agent, gave the conductor the parcel and collected any incoming ones which would be under the stairs. In the meantime you telephoned to advise the recipient that his parcel was on its way. In many cases delivery was only a matter of minutes, often before the recipient got to the agent. The railways operated a similar service whereby you paid the "railway letter" charge and the recipient would collect the package from the receiving station. All gone now, but remember we live in the age of technology!!

What a wonderful service. I never knew about this - but then again I'm too young. A service that I'm sure would still be extremely useful if it was still around. Thanks for the information on that - very interesting and enlightening indeed!

HomeMoviePerson : you're welcome. I grew up with Bartons. At one time they were the biggest privately owned bus company in Europe. They even had a weekly service to Warsaw this was when the Iron Curtain was still there! Best wishes.

Moor pride taken in rebuilding those old buses than the state of London’s buses in the modern age, as London’s bus operators and TfL has no pride along with drivers - no pride at all better in the 1960’s with RT’s in Essex under LT.

It certainly seems like there was more pride back in the 50's and 60's compared to what there is now.
