  • What's close, steep, short and has a fun scramble to the top? Why that's Mount Si!
    Mount Si is the most popular hike in Washington State with well over 100,000 people accessing its trails on an annual basis. But even with it's massive popularity, there is still a way to find some solitude on your journey to the top. And that my friend is the "Old Trail".
    Join us as we get a cracking early start to beat the crowds and claw our way up to the summit.

    Thanks for that. It took me back to my youth in the '50's when I was about 10.
    A friend of mine and his uncle did that hike but I don't think we did the haystack. From what I remember, not much has changed and I enjoyed reliving that moment withg you and Jen.

    Just came across this video again. Your videos always stand out for the high quality footage and obvious enthusiasm you have for hiking in the PNW. I hope you will begin making hiking videos again sometime but, if not, thanks for a great "back catalogue" of hikes that really opened my eyes to this extremely beautiful part of the world.

    Great video recap. enjoy every hike you can...while you can. I used to love skipping out and doing the Mt Si hike for mid-week training. as I got older, health declined but I still smile as I see others participating and enjoying the Seattle surroundings. We are so blessed. My best ascent time was 1:25 up and about :45 down. Now, after bypass surgery I'm working my way back and reclaiming lost time. p.s. the Haystack was only tried once...as I have a fear of heights. what a view !

    So great to see it again. I grew up in Preston from 69 till 83. My whole child hood was spent in those woods. The wild 70's and early 80's was a great time to be a kid from Preston. No rules, no helicopter parents. Just crazy summers and lots of bandaids

    Good "Old" Si! It's a love/hate relationship lol. Definitely solitude from the new Si zoo. I haven't used the new trail in over 2 years and been up Old about a dozen times. Definitely a great trainer hike for backpacking/mountaineering.

      Si, like mailbox are one of those hikes better left for a weekday if possible. Thankfully they left the old trails for both and didn't decommission them so there is some solitude and a good workout. :)

    Back in the late 70’s , early 80’s I used to run/jog up to the very base of haystack then immediately turn around and run down… lots of black and lost toenails from the foot jamming into the toe box of my hiking boots!! I used to live a stones throw from the Rattlesnake lake trail… fun times back then!

    Whenever I come to Snoqualmie for the annual Twin Peaks Festival, I always look up at Mt. Si, which acted as the real "Twin Peaks" in the show. Super cool to see the trail! I can't make it up that steep trail but will try the flat-but-pretty Iron Horse Trail this year, whose 0% grade is more my speed. :)-

    Hey guys, thanks for all of the awesome videos. Could you do some kind of a Gear Check video to tell us what kind of equipment you're using and when certain gear might be useful for different kinds of hikes? It'd be great to have some idea of a good kit to put together for getting started on some of the more challenging hikes.
    A good pair of trail runners and a water bottle is enough to get you up Rattlesnake Ledge or Little Si, but when do you want to start using better shoes, bringing more safety items like GPS or first aid, or maybe bring some extra traction support like walking poles?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 лет назад +1

      I've been thinking about a gear video, but it would more than likely have to wait till the winter as that's kind of our off season. Otherwise I am still backlogged with hiking/backpacking videos from last season I am working on publishing. As far as what to bring, we always bring the "10 essentials". And on top of that I have my GPS and battery backup for my phone. I always bring a pole for the down hike. And I wear approach shoes since I like to do as much scramble climbing as possible even if it's not called for. Hope that helps for now!

    Great video, thanks for continuing to show people the wonders of WA. What app were you using in your phone for the trail map at 8:35? Seems handy to show the trails in such detail. Unless that is one fancy GPS device?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 лет назад +1

      That's the Gaia GPS app. The colored trails are my previous tracks from the mountain. Otherwise you can still see most major trails with it. www.gaiagps.com/

    Thank you for your videos. Ive been enjoying them very much. I have a couple questions if you have the time to answer: 1-How can you make you videos so smooth with your Gopro? Mine is always shaky. 2- what is the app you are using for the trail?
    Keep up with the good work!

  • @Jervisdude
    @Jervisdude 4 года назад +1

    I e climbed it 4 times. I always go to the summit. When I climb the haystack, I do it such that if I slipped, I’d survive. But I don’t stay long at they tip top. It scares the crap out of me.

  • @ericpmahoney
    @ericpmahoney 7 лет назад

    Thanks for the effort you guys go to to put these videos out. Two questions- Did you see the goats while you were up there? You ever think of doing a pack dump video?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 лет назад

      Didn't see any goats on Si. Not sure if it's too close to town, but I don't think we've seen them this close in. As far as pack dumps and gear review. We think about it. But I've got such a backlog of hiking videos that they take up most of my time. Maybe this winter in the off season I will have some time for that.

  • @juanitabechtold4411

    Hi! I love this video!!! So good and very inspiring and helpful. Silly question but did you go down the same way? And like you would a ladder? And with so much traffic how does that work? I’ve hiked up the old route of Mt Teneriffe and back down along the logging road and did go to the lunch spot of Mt Si with that snow and penguin sliding you mention but didn’t do haystack. Any advice? Thank you!

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Juanita, yes, you have to go back the way you came. Sometimes you have to face into the mountain as you climb back down. As far as traffic, expect a lot and know that "uphill has right of way"... on most occasions. Always be patient and wait for the path to clear. Hope that helps!

    At 17:22 she says that a lot of the loose gravelly stuff has already been kicked out of the way. I did the haystack recently and have to disagree. You can mostly avoid the loose gravelly stuff if you try but there is plenty of it there.

  • @Hiker-bigtex

    I am heading to Seattle for work and decided to climb Mt Si on my day off. Depending on weather (rain is forecast) I may do haystack but wanted to know how the climb down was? Great video!

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  6 лет назад

      Honestly, the haystack is overflowing with novice hikers making the summit. It's not too hard. If there was no snow/ice I would say it's pretty capable IF you have experience in facing into the mountain as you down climb. I dont know your level of experience, but if you are uncomfortable going up, you're not going to be any more comfortable going down. Proceed at your own risk.

    • @Hiker-bigtex

    Your vids are awesome; #adventuregirl stats is helpful too. How much food and water is advised for average 6-8 mile hike? I did Colchuck Lake for the 4th of July but differently felt the weight of the water going up. You should do a vid of what to carry on some long hikes for the amateurs viewers ✋🏼.

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  7 лет назад +5

      Thank you! Water is tricky. My rule is bring more than you think you need and even then have a backup way to filter more water if needed. There have been many times where I needed to break out my water filter or pack in snow to my resevoir to make it back to the trailhead hydrated. If it's summer and it's 90 degrees and we are doing 8mi, I would pack 2.5L of water. I would also chug water before hitting the trail and then have water waiting at the car. I actually always have bottled water in the boot of my subaru. I'm going to try to get around to the gear and such vids this winter when the avalanches start up again. :)
