I am 72. This song is without doubt one of the outstanding pieces of modern music ever written, produced and performed considering the restrictions in technology prevalent to the 1980's. It is hypnotic in it's repetition and beautifully backed with an understated rhythm. The extended version with I think 3 guitar riffs repeated stuns the senses. This guy was and is a giant of contemporary music which considering his catastrophic upbringing and early years supporting an alcoholic mother without most of the social skills enjoyed by most of us is a triumph of his spirit and humble humanity. Although no angel, he was undoubtedly gifted by a higher power to produce such spine tingling songs.
Graham, that's what I've always thought about Mike's genius. You put it in the best words possible, and I thank you for that. Keep listening to such superb music, mate!
Graham's great comment on the subject reminds me that, probably, "Crime Of Passion" is perhaps one of the most impressive and masterfully crafted piece of a pop song. For me was the beautiful island in the middle of the eighties pop ocean. Mike Oldfield stated in his own biography that his difficult situation in his early days was what turbo-charged his music with that energy and quality. In fact, most of the greatest artists ever in human history were tormented people.
Agreed, this can be mostly said to musicians which always acted against the mainstream and those get fewer and fewer, like you sometimes cannot tell from the backside of a car if its a Mercedes or BMW any longer. It merges more and more into one, mainly trying to catch preferably everyone, but that doesn´t work or last for long, only for a certain moment. Can´t remember any musician or song of the past 20 Years which would be worth to remember.
Mike Oldfields music is so unique. No other artist ever made music like his style. That mesmerising guitar is everything. Loved him since my childhood.

I'm a singer and songwriter myself and a huge fan of Mike Oldfield. Barry Palmer is absolutely the best singer that has ever sung with Mike Oldfield! Not only Barry's very good voice, but vocally he fitted so well to the sound, harmony and musical style of Mike Oldfield. Just perfect. I don't understand why Mike Oldfield didn't continue making songs with Barry.
I can get your point, Barry is a superb singer, but Ian Anderson, Maggie Riley, Bonnie Tyler and Anita Hegerland were quite as good and i enjoy Mikes songs featuring them as well.
The Medieval feeling of these harmonies is something that never, ever gets old. Moody, very English music with bright contrasts between light and shade.
I can listen to this song a 1000 times...a 1000 times shivers running down my spine...a masterpiece that hits a sphere which is hidden very deep in my soul...
I'm late and as heaven is there , I'll be at the 1000th time soon . This is heaven . Heavenly classic piece of British 80s ! Goona again hit the replay button ~!
Holy crap. I saw this maybe once when I was a kid back in '84 or so, and then it was lost to me in time. I only remembered fragments of melody, and always wanted to find it again, but never could. UNTIL TODAY! Totally randomly, a friend at work asked if I liked Mike Oldfield. I acknowledged, and then the guy said there was a song by him I might like. So I looked it up on RUclips, and put it on. 2 seconds in, and I immediately knew! The guy from work got a huge hug.

This Song makes me feel sad but at the same time happy and, in some way, peaceful... Furthermore, where I live, there once was a nowadays long forgotten Railway, which was taken down over 60 years ago, but you can still see some bridges or the little Hill of Gravel on which the Rails used to be. Even though I never saw this Railway in Action, I somehow, you could say, fell in love with it and wish nothing more than see it running once in my life. Every time I hear this song I get reminded of this beautiful Railway.

Lyrics
On a bright day she passed away, in the morning
It's a cruel way, to take her away with no warning
He took her hands through every midnight hour
And then he saw her fading away like a spring shower
I can see a complete life's time
Pictures and posters of times and fashion
Nineteen years with no reason or rhyme
Taken away in a crime of passion
He stood to see if he could catch her breathing
But it was no good, he understood she was leaving
He looked outside the frosty windowpane
And then he saw her moving away, Elizabeth Jane
I can see a complete life's time
Pictures and posters of times and fashion
Nineteen years with no reason or rhyme
Taken away in a crime of passion
I see freedom in sight, it's a long climb
But she would not give up the fight for a long time
And I see a light come shining in tonight
Baby, it's all right, we couldn't have changed it with second sight
I can see a complete life's time
Pictures and posters of times and fashion
Nineteen years with no reason or rhyme
Taken away in a crime of passion
I see freedom light shining in the night
I see freedom but she wouldn't give up the fight
I see a light go shining in tonight
Baby, it's all right, we couldn't have changed it with second sight
I see a light go shining in tonight
Baby, it's all right, we couldn't have changed it with second sight
I see a light go shining in tonight
Baby, it's all right, we couldn't have changed it with second sight
I see a light go shining in tonight
Baby, it's all right, we couldn't have changed it with second sight
