Oh boy, this song has just accompanied me throughout my life. It was released before I was even born, and the first time I heard it was in the early nineties, when I found it in my dad's record collection and put it on randomly. I have been in love with Taurus II and Five Miles Out since. Five Miles Out just invokes such a visceral deep reaction in me. It makes me fear, it makes me elated, and it feels like it plays directly on my heart strings. It takes me through such a spectrum of emotion that I always come out the other side feeling exhausted, but satisfied. Can't listen to it in public though because of the tears it draws from my eyes. :)

2021 and this song still gives me goosebumps. Back in the 90's I've discovered it by pure chance, I bought a Greenday cassette and there were some extra non-Greenday songs in the end, as was sometimes the case with these bootlegs. Turned out to be my favorite song on that tape, but I didn't know what the names was, and only learned several years later from a musician friend.
Mike Oldfield tells a story with an electric guitar in a way that is unique, he builds the feel of the clear sky and then the building energy & power of the storm & then I never worked out myself if the plane survived or not - but it works whichever way you imagine it. And throughout it are Maggie Reilly's haunting notes in that clear voice that is the sound of an angel guiding the plane to safety. I never realised it related to a near miss he experienced himself (if what another person wrote is correct) which makes it more poignant but it is as others have said a real masterpiece & I do not expect others to ever copy this style of unique music
