Best of MikeOldfield: goo.gl/5FqCWf Subscribe here: goo.gl/xRrbjs Music video by Mike Oldfield performing Five Miles Out. (C) 1982 Mercury Records Limited
It was actually based on a real life incident in Mike's life where he was passenger aboard a small plane with an inexperienced pilot who was terribly clever and decided to fly directly into a terrible storm.
Wonderful song, voices, guitar, drums, atmosphere... Mike Oldfield hitting the nail on the head. Again. Maggie Reilly as always 🥰 Good music is like good wines. Never grow old, but to get better time after time ❤️🥳
So it was in Poland... (we were lucky in the 80's not to have to worry 'bout western copyrights ;-P - they literally played full albums on the radio, giving commands: record now!) :-()
I am so glad you found such great music. I made a point to raise my kids to appreciate good music from my own childhood and they are still grateful for the fact as far as I can tell. 16 yr old daughter listens to black sabbath and nirvana over Beyonce and that other shrill Rihanna creature any day of the week
when I was 15 in 1982 I heard this song on the radio . It was the beginning in music interest for me . Music is so powerfull to use imagination, emotions and knowledge . This was my 1st. record . I still enjoy remembering and listening to this music . I see there's good music today !! HOPE and listen 🥰
Oh boy, this song has just accompanied me throughout my life. It was released before I was even born, and the first time I heard it was in the early nineties, when I found it in my dad's record collection and put it on randomly. I have been in love with Taurus II and Five Miles Out since. Five Miles Out just invokes such a visceral deep reaction in me. It makes me fear, it makes me elated, and it feels like it plays directly on my heart strings. It takes me through such a spectrum of emotion that I always come out the other side feeling exhausted, but satisfied. Can't listen to it in public though because of the tears it draws from my eyes. :)
I love this guy. Many words come to my mind to describe his music, (not always good ones), but if I had to choose one I would stay with this: HAUNTING. Truly one of a kind artist.❤
I'm now 17 and I grew up on music like this, it's a big part of my life. I prefer to listen to a balance of newer music and the music I grew up with. Who's to say there aren't a number of kids who are the same as me?
first ever heard this song november 1989, was going through a painful split up, this song holds some great memories from the support of friends during that time, this song we played daily, loved it then love it now.... hare krishna mike x
The first time i heard this song, my brother played it to me. I hated it. After three or four (nowadays hundreds of) listenings to it I have to admit it´s pure genius! One of the best songs ever.
2021 and this song still gives me goosebumps. Back in the 90's I've discovered it by pure chance, I bought a Greenday cassette and there were some extra non-Greenday songs in the end, as was sometimes the case with these bootlegs. Turned out to be my favorite song on that tape, but I didn't know what the names was, and only learned several years later from a musician friend.
I always thought it a travesty that her original version of Everytime We Touch failed to have any success, yet Cascada had a massive hit with a bubble gum dance version.
@@TonyEnglandUK well, straight away I wanted to ask anybody - who's that girl, (running in around) ??? But - never mind - it's a film production - needs actress... Maggy is one and only.
I discovered this is in the 90s and it was a favorite alongside Moonlight Shadow. A few years down, my (now ex) bf wanted to explore each other's "weirdest" favorite music. It was no contest. I played this, he "hated" it on first listen, then couldn't stop listening on repeat till he knew all the lyrics and guitar riffs. It is that epic.
Mike Oldfield is quite unique I feel. Hard to categorise him. He is in his own little category. You either love him or you don't I guess. Not quite rock and roll it is something else. Clever and talented though without a doubt. He gets good singers and people to join him in his creations.
Mike Oldfield tells a story with an electric guitar in a way that is unique, he builds the feel of the clear sky and then the building energy & power of the storm & then I never worked out myself if the plane survived or not - but it works whichever way you imagine it. And throughout it are Maggie Reilly's haunting notes in that clear voice that is the sound of an angel guiding the plane to safety. I never realised it related to a near miss he experienced himself (if what another person wrote is correct) which makes it more poignant but it is as others have said a real masterpiece & I do not expect others to ever copy this style of unique music
Wow.. Guys.. I am flashed..had this on Vinyl and forget what a impressed Masterpiece... The Voice... The Guitar.... The weird introducing.... The bass... And finally the drums at 3:11...Chapeau...i take me hat 🎩🎩 for respect...
I had the double cassette, which had Tubular bells, Moonlight Shadow etc, I played it to death from my when I bought it as a new release until my late 20's, when the tape gave up!! BEST MUSIC EVER. I am trying to find the same "double" on cd.
I played the back end out of this at university - and the rest of the album - when it came out. Still love it. A mate used to get me to play it for the technical flying terms... (well, he was in the University Air Squadron)
I had the whole album on audio tape and lent it to a friend back in 83' but never got it back. When i moved into my new home in 96' which is around the corner and a 2 minute walk from his house i thought I would surprise him and asked if he still had the tape but he had moved out 2 weeks earlier, damn.
First of all, thank you Mike for your music. For years you brought us beauty and inspiration, thank you for that. I recently discovered your interview on "one to one", in which you explain this song was inspired by a risky and scary flight experience you had in Spain. So just as a side note: I always associated this song with Saint-Exupéry's many adventurous flight experiences. Some excerpts from his book "Terre des hommes" fit exquisitely well with your song. 😌
Mike Oldfiekd .great song and a great song writer. Platinum great album my favourite album.such songs as Sally .Maggie Reilly great voice. Songs of those days where great and listenable to the ear 👍👏💖🦋✌🌟
Oh man. My parents had this on 1st release lp. As i child pouring through their collection Mike Oldfield took me some special places. This song actually beats the door down on metal in its crescendo! Have you ever seen him recording??
The interplay of the two voices. Maggie's delicate voice with Mike's staccato. Brilliantly done to this day!
And what a beautiful voice Maggie has.
Its hard to write a song that sounds like nothing else ever written before ! This one does just that. Unique!
Dokładnie.
Splatoon OST
Loved this from the 80’s and even hearing it 42yrs later, it’s still just as good. I’ve always loved Maggie’s voice, pure perfection 🙌👍
i was depressed for 25 years
this song is how i experienced finally digging myself out of the shit
hope no more depression!!!
hope no more depression!!!!
Vocoder is perfect, Maggie is perfect, Mike's solo is perfect, this song is strangely great and uplifting.
Vocoder was most in fashion in 1982/83.
It was actually based on a real life incident in Mike's life where he was passenger aboard a small plane with an inexperienced pilot who was terribly clever and decided to fly directly into a terrible storm.
The whole album is perfect.

This goes out to all pilots who help to defend the free world. You are badass.
This song was a hit in 1983 in Denmark, and I still remember it, Mike Oldfield is a genius.
Oldfield was far more successful in mainland Europe than UK another shame of UK.
This song - and the album - was also very popular here in Germany. Oldfield has a cult fanbase here
So it was in Poland... (we were lucky in the 80's not to have to worry 'bout western copyrights ;-P - they literally played full albums on the radio, giving commands: record now!) :-()
Can't tell you how many times I've listened to the Five Miles Out album. It is truly fantastic. 🎸
I am 14 Years and The only one in my Class how Like Mike Oldfield what ist wrong With my Generation This Type of Music is so nice and Epic
Normal phenomenon if you ask me. Most of the people prefer pop, rap or crap

When I was 17 in the early 2000 I was the only person I knew my own age who'd even heard of Mike Oldfield so... yeah.
The structure of the song is so... Different or weird, and the videoclip is so random, but... I can't stop repeating it 😍😍
I still have the vinyl, timeless!

One of the best songs by Mike Oldfield, which means that this is one of the best songs ever created.
👍
So true
Oldfield. A flawed narcissistic genius who turned repetition into an intense ‘low cultural’ art form.
@@morse1883 ?
in english please
@@morse1883 you sure don't care about Oldfield. Despite commenting in EVERY song...

Wow, this is the first time I heard this song. Love it! Maggie Reilly has a gorgeous voice.
Listen to Moonlight Shadow, Maggie is the vocalist. Haunting.
there's a demo version of this in which Maggie sings all the vocal parts
Weird... scary.... angelic.... unique... bombastic... catchy tune..
The more often you listen to this song.... the more you like it :-)
I love the sound he gets from his guitar , such a lovely tone , always been a fan :)

The airplane is either Miles or inspired by Miles. AND THE SONG IS GREAT!
Every song of oldfield is a masterpiece! Incredible!
Maggie Reilly is superb! She makes this masterpiece!
Agree with everything you say. Mike is an underrated talent made much better (IMHO) by the supporting vocals of the fantastic Maggie Reilly😊

Maggie Reilly has the most beautiful voice.

Listening to this for the 1st time in 1982 when I was 17 introduced me to the wonderful music of Mike Oldfield
I've heard this song many times since I was a kid and now I just noticed there's Tubular bells on background at 0:12 😯
