    FINALLY someone who also thinks it looks bad!! I’ve seen so many people praise the set design as being much better than the writing, claiming it looks pretty despite being terribly written. I just cannot agree. For the ridiculous amount of budget they have, I shouldn’t be able to see that Galadriel is swimming in a studio tank of water rather than the open ocean. I shouldn’t be able to tell the costumes are made of cheap and blatantly modern materials. I shouldn’t be thinking about how fake the trees look or the poor lighting jobs that ruin the atmosphere entirely. When I watch The Rings of Power, everything feels like a set. It doesn’t feel like the world goes on forever outside of what’s shown on screen, it feels like if the camera pans to the left I’ll see the studio lights and the crew and a tangle of wires and the catering cart. CGI backgrounds only do so much, and somehow theirs don’t even look that good. I don’t understand how this show can have such a good budget and still look bad

    Season 1 WAS filmed in New Zealand, and there was a massive kerfuffle with Amazon because they used their influence to insure the local workers, as usual, got the worst deal imaginable out of it. Then, they decided they could do it even cheaper elsewhere; hence Season 2 was filmed on a bunch of sound stages in the UK.

      This makes so much sense. Season 2 just kept feeling too fake to me.

    It's not just you. Comparing Rings of Power x House of The Dragon, there are some points of difference:
    - The directing work in HOTD is much better, giving dynamics to the interactions between the actors and the scenery.
    - HOTD prioritizes real locations and practical effects, even when there are dragons in the scene.
    - HOTD's costumes are better in general design, quality of materials used and adjustment to scene contexts (dirt, for example). Furthermore, it doesn't feel generic, everything is reminiscent of Westeros, it's impossible to confuse it with another fantasy or period show.
    - The choice of CGI seems more correct to me in HOTD. There are several types of CGI, from realistic to more cartoony CGI. The design and texture of HOTD's dragons try to achieve realism and that's why they film shots in the real world and put the dragons in the scene. They insert CGI into the real world instead of inserting the real world into a digital world.
    - The use of light is more natural in HOTD.
    - Both shows certainly put color filters in post-production, but while HOTD tries to be raw, RoP goes overboard with the strong color tone.
    All these visual aspects make RoP, unlike its competition, not very immersive. It seems so clean and fake, as if the show constantly reminds you that it is a show from a billion-dollar company.

    • @nobu3358
      @nobu3358 14 дней назад

      First 2 episodes of rop are better than the entire second season of hotd.
      The only things better when it comes to hotd are dialogues and acting. But overall, I was bored af watching it. Especially those daemon scenes. Wtf was that, they dragged it for an entire fucking season.

    • @pedrodias7566
      @pedrodias7566 14 дней назад

      @@nobu3358 Lol no.
      I think the first season of HOTD is better than the second overall, but the big moments are still much better than RoP. Rook's Rest is better than RoP season 1 and 2 combined.
      RoP has embarrassing scenes, like the one where Pharazon usurps Miriel. It's such a lower level of script and acting, it only rivals HOTD for carrying the name of LOTR and Tolkien, but in fact it should rival Wheel of Time.

      this is a crazy thing to say cuz house of the dragon season 2 is one of the laziest things HBO has made in years. Every character is wearing the same shit every episode. Every single character is stuck in the SAME ROOM or PLACE for 7 episodes straight... it's insane.

    • @light_bringer_82
      @light_bringer_82 13 дней назад

      Didnt like house of dragon: bad story and script, the dragon cgi worse than game of thrones, the charecters are not interesting, slow pacing, the show fails to push the sory forward in season 1 and season 2 gets worse. Feels like your watching a bad soap opera with dragons. Rings of power has a more interesting story, cast of charecters, music,cgi and a more intriguing villain. Also, id take fantasy over repetitive boring politics based on european history. Lets not forget that George rr martin is not happy with the show and claimed we will see more toxcicity in season 3

    It's actually the first time I hear someone talking about this and i could not agree more! (like + sub!). I stopped watching halfway through the first season. It was boring and i simply didn't care about this show. I didn't care about the characters, i didn't care about the story, i didn't care about the worldbuilding and despite many other opinions, i didn't think it looked good for all the reasons you've mentioned. You were also able to find words for what i disliked about the Harfoots designs and the Hobbit dwarfs designs. Thanks for this upload! (I also liked how you described your feelings towards Narnia or Harry Potter ❤) P.S.: PLEASE give Peter Jackson and his team the rights to use the Silmarillion. I need a good mini series (or movies) about that age that feels and looks like LotR.

    You are completely right, everything seems fake, but this is a problem with all the new TV shows and movies, everything is too bright, too clean, their costumes seem artificial, like they are cgi, their attention is going to details, but they make the details too perfect for the real world.
    I understand that the elves need to be clean and almost perfect, but the others don't make sense.
    Even when the character is dirty it seems painted, just fking throw the actor in mud, or in a similar situation the character is in, the vulcanic eruption, throw some real ashe on them, burn their clothes randomly, don't do the pixel perfect cuts and bruises

  • @friedrichdergunstige1252

    I think this is generally an issue with all costume departments today, and make up artists. They are "too good". The costumes are too well made. Even the fake weathered ones look too neat.
    A big issue with the harfoots specifically though, is their read cheeks. I mean it just looks like they get out of bed each morning and apply some makeup, because nobody looks like that. If your cheeks are red, that's not a permanent things, that's flushing that comes and goes.
    The digital "sheen" of everything, which also plagued The Hobbit isn't doing it any favours either.

  • @jzayas5698
    @jzayas5698 15 дней назад

    No, you are not alone.
    I don't think it is because the places "exist" in real life (compared to the Trilogy). I think the fact that everything happens in a matter of seconds kind of loses the viewer. For example, when the Numenoreans arrive to the small village before Mount Doom erupts, they arrive from their ships to the village from one scene to another. Same when Halbrand and Galadriel get to Numenor for the first time. They spend 0 time getting the viewer to feel like it is a real world where these characters exist in.
    In the Trilogy, Gandalf explains it takes like 5 or 6 days (can't remember exactly) to get across Moria. They actually spend time inside Moria. Once they get out, they spend a couple of scenes showing the Fellowship walking through several places (the Misty Mountains before arriving to Moria), the plains before getting into Lothlorien, etc.
    Other than the acting, the plot and everything we know, the pacing is horrible in this show. They spend too much time on stuff we don't give a damn, and too little making the world feels believable. They spend too much in eyecandy that it just looks stupid. For example the action scenes prior Mount Doom eruption, Galadriel's girl boss moments, the fight between the black elf (I can't even memorize his name, thats how much I care about his character) and the big orc. Everything in RoP is so repetitive. The harfoots storyline is as depressive as Isildur's. The armors, the weapons, everything is so over the top.

    • @firsttimereaders
      @firsttimereaders  15 дней назад

      Fully agree. And I am with you on the pacing. I cannot get through it becuase it feels so poorly paced.

  • @pabliux142
    @pabliux142 14 дней назад

    Just watched The Fellowship yesterday, and could not agree more with your thoughts. As I grow older, the sensations that the Shire brings to me are ever more warm and comforting and nostalgic. And Moria and other grand creationg like the Argonath, makes you believe that there was a greater past, where grandiose things were built that still leave the inhabitants of the world in awe.
    But crucially, the fake feelings of RoP vs the tactile experience with LoTR is also existing in places where it should not. Nature seems a lot more believable in LoTR. For example that same forest near the Argonath towards the end of the first movie, or the forests that surround the Shire in that famous scene with one of the Nazgul.

    Its a fantasy world man .. its so funny you guys expect all of it to be film with in the real world... i agree the series is not perfect.. and no where near the lord of the rings trilogy... but im glad as a lord of the ring fan that at least more of the story being digitalised rather just being on books and paper which one day will forget.. and i hope someone will go deeper in to the first age of the middle earth im hoping some one will make a movie or series about morgoth's rising and fall... and dont be stupid.. expect it to be cgi because that way they can show the fantasy world as it is... nose real world back ground and ironically dont think there are places in real world thats can film such even... it will have to be cgi

      This is an interesting point. I think the same...it's fantasty, but I'm unfiarly comparing it to LOTR which didn't feel fantasy to me. It just felt too in the real world. It started with The Hobbit movies to me with it feeling too CGI and fake, but you make a great point. I am glad they are at least trying to make these things.

    1:20 they walk around beautiful locations on their holiday trips which they can afford even more by saving money using CGI instead of filming at irl locations.
