woow this helped me understand some MUs in SF6 why some ryu players do backdash into st. HP to beat the throws. Pretty helpful brian and i still do think some things from SFV might work on SF6 as well.
Never did understand just how delay tech works...now I'm going to have to sit and try to learn that sort of timing. Also, hello to all the twitch peeps.
I'm surprised you did not talk about tick throw buttons into shimmy, which works with almost every character and allows them to still shimmy in those situations where they can not walk out of throw range fast enough. Gets beaten by reversals still of course, but its an important option.
Tick throw buttons into shimmy is the most basic way Bison can shimmy simply because of his slow walk speed. He can't shimmy like most characters that has an average walk speed. This or the backdash technique that Brian showed in this video are usually the Bison player's tools to bait a throw techer.
As someone who only really casually played Melee and Smash before getting into SFV, I think the throw distance is the one thing that still troubles me. Probably doesn't help that I play Marth and he has a notoriously large grab range, but it always feels so short when I try to throw and long when I get thrown, usually by Juris since they seem to love doing it. I guess I just have to play more to get used to it, like everything else I've gotten used to so far.
that was a great vid.. i really struggle with this... everyone just delay buttons though.. thats the one i struggle with the most.. i wish they delay teched still
I always thought I got scooped instead of my shimmy working because I was ducking and extending my hurt box. This video gave clarity in these scenarios.
Something I've learned to appreciate about Juri is that she's got a 3 frame that's also a low with good enough reach to beat traditional shimmies. The only other character I can think of that has this is Chun-li, even then you don't get much off of it and there's still always counterplay. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm overestimating these buttons though.
You can also use slower buttons to punish delay techs. When i play Ryu i rarely go for this option but it's a good thing to have in your arsenal: in situations where you can't use a shimmy due to spacing and you're pretty certain that your opponent will try to delay tech i sometimes use st hk instead of the regular st or cr mp to pressure. The slow startup of st hk makes it come out at the timing of a delay tech and it will lead into a spinstate crush counter. It's risky since it loses to immediate wake up throw, jab or ex dp but you get a huge reward when it lands. A safer option is delayed cr lk > cr lp xx heavy dp, you will block wakeup jabs and ex dps. It loses to immediate throw but beats delayed throw. Its harder to execute since you gotta manually time the cr lk and it offers less reward on hit.
Once we start to implement this type of techniques, Lord daigo steps up and once in the corner he will wake up walk forward and backthrow you into the corner to beat both meaty throw and shimmy
You can beat the shimmy by delay teching on wake up but it’s hella dangerous. What you do is instead of blocking while delay teching you walk forward. If done correctly it should still catch the wake up throw and beat your opponents shimmy but it leaves you completely open to a meaty.
Some of this I hadn't considered... I go for shimmy probably too often, because I always felt it was one of the safest options without totally forfeiting pressure (especially as it's safe from ex dp wakeup). I developed really bad habits playing with Cammy at low levels because sort of brain dead pressure works. I no longer play with Cammy but I've retained a lot of the bad habits... or I go too far to the extreme trying to escape the bad habits (playing too conservatively and sacrificing pressure). Going to lab some stuff when I get the chance, make sure I have a handful of little set plays for each specific knockdown
loving the diagrams, really nice...can you shimmy in other games like BBCF or DBFZ to a lesser extent? for example the DR in DBFZ would beat a slight backstep but maybe backdashing is a replacement for some parts of that?
I've watched a handful of your videos and now is when i noticed i wasnt subbed to you. You might want to have a call to action somewhere my dud. Thankx for the awsome content.
ok imma sound like an ass but why don't people understand that if they delay tech shimmy and if they don't just shimmy i feel like its the simplest thing i don't i feel like im being an ass but when i to plat and learned shimmys i realized what i have to do when they did that. typing this out i realized im being an ass but idk care anymore lmao
So is this tech also affected by you your movement? Like if I was vega how got the knockdown and the opponent was mashing throw and the vega decided to shimmy, would vega be able to walk out the throw range just because he has a very fast back walkspeed?
E. Honda's back throw :-D It has such range that I often throw players trying to shimmy me 😛 E. Honda's throws have 0.9 reach, which is only beaten by Alex 1.0 throws, most of the cast have a reach value somewhere between 0.8 and 0.85.
Is it actually worth delay teching, aside from situations where throw kills? Isn't the risk reward ratio better if you just block or block delay normal?
Depends on player matchups and when not on corner imo since you get spacing and you cant shimmy on corner and youre left guessing if its a throw or a meaty
I feel like shimmies are too strong in this game due to how safe amd rewarding it is(unless you're playing a character who can get huge damage from a low such as Karin)
@@Brian_F I don't have any problems taking the throw midscreen. The problem is the post throw situation some characters have in the corner(Seth, Kage, Ibuki, Cammy, Sakura, Kolin, Karin, Sakura, Ed etc can walk up and press a medium/heavy normal and be plus and close to you for a shimmy). If taking the throw in the corner meant you're back in the neutral or something like you need to block one heavy normal and then you're back in the neutral(like Balrog's post throw situation where you need to use the dash due to the distance between the characters after the throw) then I'd agree with taking the throw. The mentioned characters above can shimmy without much risk especially against characters which don't have any long range cancellable lows and interrupting their walk up is really risky especially when you're playing a character which doesn't have any 3 frame normal.
