Franz Klammer 1976 Innsbruck Olympic Gold Medal run. Live on TV. I was a little kid laughing for joy. One of the greatest wins in the history of the Olympics. Along with the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” US Hockey team’s - all college kids - win over the most formidable pros on earth. Franz was one of my boyhood heroes. No one road the raggedy edge like Klammer. A go for broke thing of beauty and joy. Dominated 4 years of World Cup downhill. Thanks Deb! Damn if skiing/riding aren’t the greatest sports on earth.
I am an instructor who has enjoyed your channel for a long time and I always look forward to your next video. Your explanations have reinforced/expanded my technical knowledge. Your enthusiasm has encouraged me to be more playful in each lesson no matter what the age. Thank you!
I am disabled now but my skiing was in the late 70 to early 2001 . Loved ir so much .. I was so lucky my father took me to see klammers olympic win and as an adult was in kitzbuhel in 84 to watch his last win there. Thank you so much for this post it brought back so many memories. I truly miss the thrill of the mountains 😢😢.Robert. .
Three legendary skiers! Love watching them both but all the while I was watching Bode I kept thinking “yeh, and Deb is skiing right up with him without poles and filming all of it! Get job, Deb!
This video brought the biggest smile to me face. I’m from Carinthia/Austria, like Franz Klammer. When I was little my whole family was glued to the TV every time he was racing. He was such a hero to all of us. I now have a family in NC and haven’t seen or heard from Franz Klammer in almost 40 years. How awesome to see that he is still just as cool as ever!! Thanks for this video-it brought back such wonderful childhood memories, and it made my day! 😃👏🏻⛷ 🇦🇹
Franz Klammer was my hero as a small boy. Always the most exciting skiier to watch with poles and skis in all directions but fearless and fast as the wind. Great to see that he's still in fine shape, even if he's not as wild as once he was! Salut!
Cool comment...I am the same as you, though I grew up in Munich but I spent many holidays in Kaernten near Villach and also skied a lot in Austria. I do not follow ski racing anymore but in the 70s I was glued to the TV and admired racers like Franz, Hansi,, Ingemar, Rosi. Wish I could go back in time LOL
Just a joy to watch. They both have such amazing touch and looseness in their movements. Deb, I love the direction you're taking the channel. This is fast becoming the top ski channel on YT. Great work!
I am 73 years old and still remember Franz Klammer’s Olympic downhill run when he almost lost control but turned it a Gold Medal time. It was great to watch him ski and crank out those short radius turns on GS skis. I think we all expected Bodie Miller to lay them over at high edge angles but you got to love how Franz can make a ski turn. It definitely is the craftsman not the tool. Thanks for another great season of ski videos.
Franz was my first ever star and hero. I was just 12 years old and was sitting at home with a broken leg after my first skiing holiday in my life. I was so in love with this new sport (coming from a land with no mountains - Belgium) that I started to watch the races on German television. Then a month later came the Olympics and of course that fantastic race of him. What a guy. I would still be starstruck if I would to sit with him on the chairlift like you did here.
When I was a kid learning to ski, back in the day, I couldn’t wait for Wide World of Sports to come on with Franz Klammer ripping the downhill! (Soft spot for my Crazy Canucks though…) Awesome to see Franz and Bode enjoying themselves with you Deb.
I am absolutely awe struck! Franz is probably my all-time ski hero and to watch these guys just skiing and having fun AND making it look oh, so easy was great entertainment. Thank you! I have now subscribed. John, London, UK.
I had my photo taken with FK when I was just 13 on my first ever ski trip to Italy way back in 1979. It was an experience I have treasured all my life. I always remember my father relating tales of watching FK on ski Sunday on BBC 1. Franz so so relaxed in his downhill racing his calf muscles would flap in the breeze. I am fairly sure he was competing in a slalom event, managed to lose a ski and completed the course on one ski. As you do!
Franz Klammer - the biggest downhill save of all time. Bode Miller - balls out take no prisoners racer. Contrasting techniques on turn initiation but both are aggressive. A fun video. Well done.
The retired life can limit the need for turns employing athletic performance. Not everyone can make turns like Bode and Franz, but everyone can choose to make turns shaped liked the turns made by Bode or Franz. Not everyone can ski as fast as Bode or Franz, but everyone can ski the slow line fast. Skiing is so much more than style on groomed snow and so was your “aprez-golf” treat. Thank you.
Thanks, Deb. I am 72 and have skied since I was 6 years old. Wonderful to see and appreciate the skills of both legends. Too bad YOU didn't jump into the mix. Keep the videos coming, great job!
So grateful for what you do on this channel, Deb. It's not just the technical instruction, though that's made an enormous difference for me as a second season skier, but also videos like this that inspire us that make this channel so special. Thanks for sharing your love of the sport with us and your expertise.
Both Bode and Franz have been inspirations in my skiing. Franz's Insbrook Gold medal run remains an all time Olympic highlight and Bode captures that same at the very edge, pushing it to the limit attitude. Thanks Deb!! And I think I ran into one of your classes heading out to the bumps a few weeks back at Taos. Awesome!!
I just caught this video and can't believe how amazing it is. Seeing the real greats just bombing and enjoying skiing??? Wow... major thanks for the great content! Again!!!
Bode Miller is just in a league of his own. First video I have ever seen of someone following behind him for a "fun" run 😂 He makes it look soo easy and effortless. PS love the content Deb 👌🏾
so light, flow with the go, yet precise and aggressive on the edges, really using the legs. Carving like that is essentially a permanent squat with the ass just brushing the piste ha!!
Omg I can remember his run Olympics screaming my head off when he almost fell on a few turns. It was the most exciting run in my opinion in Olympic history.
Wow! What an absolute honor that must have been....For Franz and Bodie ;) Seriously, though. You are three of my favorite skiers of all time and this was a super entertaining video! It seems like the people sharing the slope had absolutely no idea they were in the presence of such epic figures in the history of the sport.
That was awesome. I still remember Franz Klammer's Olympic downhill runs. And Bode Miller, how great is that to ski with both of them. So interesting to see the differences in styles of skiing.
Grandissimo kaiser Franz. Un carisma che manca ai campioni di oggi. Dopo 40 e più ricordi indelebili. Avversario temuto e rispettato dei miei eroi Thoeni, Plank ecc.ecc. Bellissimi ricordi. Fortunato a vivere quel felice periodo dello sci.
So great to watch the variations of turn radius!! So many northeast skiers I watch while going up the chair stay stuck in a perfect rhythm of radius, never switching it up. For me it’s a dance with the mountain of changing rhythms, speed, and technique. The way Bode ripped it, without of course the medals!
Wow, by just a few weeks I missed two of the greats of all time, thanks for sharing the amazing personal moments of legends that we otherwise would not hear about. Awesome.
Yes, their weight displacement, unweighting, and weight transfer are both very different, but both beautiful. Wild, that they were both Downhill World Cup champions. Brings back memories seeing those OLIN MARK VI skiis and some of the others. My first skis were the Head 240, but my favorite ski brand Is Rossignol. I really miss skiing alot. I forgot, how great you are and were also Deb. Thank you. Skiing is the greatest sport on earth.
Absolutely Awesome, I grew up watching Mr. Klammer on ABC Wide World of Sports! The name synonymous with Alpine Skiing! You all are so special to me and love to learn from you all to improve my technique! The season is over, now to study for 2023!!! Thanks Deb for your passion and sage advice! Stay safe and healthy! Best, Jeff
Thank you, Deb great video of two of the greatest skiers ever. I'm close in age to Franz and I learned how to ski from several German friends that are around 80 now. Franz is right on about style this is the way my German friends skied and they taught me so much and the whole style of a European skier. Love all the old ski's you use as a back drop. I own the Dura Fiber and long Rossignol ski's you have. They both were great skis in their day along with Raichle comp boots.
Wow I thought watching you ladies in the last video was amazing well Deb your stuff is so good . Following Bodie and Franz . I am in Ski heaven . I love Franz’s comment “ I know how to Ski “ . Priceless. I agree he knows how to Ski
Bode dragging elbows like a motoGP Racer....Franz turning fast and effortlessly ...warmup for the bumps....and just like that... The season has melted away
I love your reference to riding a motorcycle and comparing it to carving! My husband rode 450 A class in motocross growing up, learned how to ski in middle school, and learned to carve and dragging his elbows in high school. He said that riding dirt bikes helped him develop his skiing style because of the similar body mechanics and familiarity with leaning over while riding out the momentum. How fun 😝
Deb...wow! What a finish to the season. Two amazing skiers and yep - different styles but both amazing. Impossible to say which style I prefer....both magnificent!
I had the pleasure of skiing with Klammer for a day at Sugarbush, decades ago. He was kind and held himself in so the group could keep up. I followed right in his his tracks on two runs, just one turn behind. It was like water flowing downhill... smoothest skier I ever saw.
Franz is amazingly quick in turn to turn and good cut. It is so nice to see the previous generation still have it and how good they are in modern pists and skis. I grow up with Klammer and Stenmark.
Fun, thank you. I skied with Franz at Alpine Meadows, that's him, always turning. Great Guy. And so cool to see all the old skis behind you in the opening. The Ski, Pre 1200, K2 4?? Olin Mark 4, Red Sleds, no Rossi 4S ? We used to race the (old) tram on Gun Barrel, Plake was swinging 215 Red Sleds, while we all had soft 185's. Then at the bottom of the hill Plake would do perfect ballet moves, while wearing 3 different color polo shirts, layering collars up, then of course rocking the hawk, good times. Im still banging at 64, I posted a vid of Big Bear. Thanks for the memories. Peace.
OMG...Bode Miller and King Franz, my idol since Innsbruck and his gold-medal run for the ages. I will never forget watching it on TV. The single most exciting moment in sports that I have ever seen. I can still hear Bob Beattie's voice filled with excitement.
I just now discovered your channel because it has come up on my algorithm since I went skiing the other day locally here in SoCal. What a treat it is to be coached here by you, another LEGEND. Keep it going, and thank you!@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong
Two of the most incredible persons on skis. When I first saw Bode Miller in a downhill race I knew he was something special, downhill skiers usually hold on, Miller 'climbs' the track to get a better line at a hundred miles an hour. Mindblowing.
Love your videos Deb and what a joy to watch them both. I m old enough to remember Jean-claude, Franz, on to Phil and Steve, then into Bode's era; and it's all fantastic. Smooth elegance to race track edging. I wanna go ski!
Deb, what a great wrap up video for the season. (Bodi can rip it). Your videos are absolutely the best. I’ve forwarded your videos on my ski group. Thanks so much!
What a great video Debbie! I had the rare for me a once in a lifetime op way back in the 80s to ski with Franz Klammer on my home mountain at Timberline Lodge Mt Hood Oregon. Franz was promoting his line of skis and ski clothing back then. Myself and a few employees of the ski shop that was selling his line was involved with a promo video that was made for him, part of it was on the local news that night. Your video brought back a very fond memory of being able to ski with one of the best skiers in the world!
1:46. Happy to see Bode use the SLOW flag as a GS gate. I do the same thing, but I'm just pretending to be an Olympic skier. In my defense, I pretend it's regular slalom in olden times when you didn't hit the rigid poles, so a very tight turn really is enough to slow down.
I think the difference between Bode and Franz is simply core strength and flexibility. They are both on top of the skis and positioned in a good stance. For us senior types doing squats and dead lifts can drastically improve our core strength. Flexibility is a challenge as we age and is a never ending battle. Getting the skis to snap out of a turn is more difficult as we age too. I know Franz learned the classic wedeln technique, which Bode probably was never exposed to. For groomers the basics are: put the skis on the edge and pressure them through out the turn. The skis sidecut, length, and stiffness; with edging and pressure will determine the radius of the turn. Because Franz is skiing in such a narrow stance, the angulation is therefore limited as the skis cannot get a high edge angle. For skiers still learning about angulation (and inclination) the following is a good exercise. On a flat area, narrow your stance and try to put the skis on edge by moving your knees (actually the hips since knees cannot move very much laterally). Now try the same thing in a wide stance. It will be much easier to get the skis on edge. Repeat with forward stance, a balanced stance, and then a "sitback stance." The in "the center" balanced stance allows for the highest edge angles. Many people have seen Bode coming out of a turn in a setback stance. Bode can get away with this because his backward stance will straighten out the turn, which a racer wants to do (i.e. not overturn). However, very few skiers have Bode's stomach muscle strength that pulls his upper Body forward again for the start of a new turn and athleticism. Marcel Hirscher can do this as well. Watching Mikaela Shiffrin's style where she is almost always in a balance athletic stance is probably the technique for us mere mortals to use. Just remember that having fun on the mountain is what is all about. Just because you have a different technique doesn't mean you are a lesser skier. Stein Erikson, Hansi Hinterseer, and Franz Klammer have a technique that is just beautiful to watch when they free ski but is not used much these days.
Best video! Bode and franz. Wow! You can really hear the tech bode was talking about through his turns. The snow jibbered, but his ski bit. Wow! I usually lose an edge on sugary ice... it scoops out... weird feeling. Like a rail vanished below my feet.
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong was on here and saw your comment. If you see this just know im 36yrs old and went from terrified on the beginer hill to skiing double blacks in one season, in part thanks directly to your channel. I stuck with my 65's so long in my lessons even though they were unforgiving specifically because of your videos. So thankful I did! THANK YOU!!
Man, my Rossignol ST comps are sitting back there in that shot. I had a lot of miles on those things. That was a great one--I miss those days. Still out there myself also getting it done.
Thank you so much for this amazing video, and for doing what you do and for being you. Hugs and respect from Italy. (lovely to see you rocking those Sl fis fischer skis)
One of my favorite videos of all time! Used to race in school in the late 70s and Franz was such an inspiration. Cut my chops at Cannon Mt in NH-later to be the home of Bodie Miller…he was at Cannon just two weeks ago. Thank you!
Holy smokes Deb... chasing Bode Miller and Franz Klammer down groomers at Taos on a sunny afternoon. A dream come true -- probably for you too... =) The closest I ever came to one of these pinch-me on-slope moments was chasing Steve Mahre down Roller Coaster during a clinic at White Pass many moons ago. Thank you very much for this one.
Body Miller casually carving is jaw dropping. That's poetry. The fluidity. What a God on snow
Franz Klammer is an inspiration. He's 68 and skis like a demon.

This video is SICK! I love the skiing, the attitudes, the best feelings. Klammer is a ripper and Bode's carving unreal.

Merveilleux Franz Klammer! Quel beau skieur!
Desole pour Miller, mais j'eusse préféré voir Ingemar Stenmark, le plus élégant de tous!

I remember that run so well. I had never skied, but watching that run convinced me that I wanted to learn. Now, at 70, I still ski regularly.
I am 69 now and ski ski as often as the grandkids let me!
He was completely out of control and somehow hung on. One of the greats.

What a demo, two of my favorites. Bode skis like I do with those deep cut GS turns, but man he gets so low to the terrain. That is why he was so fast.
Wow, when Bode starts to crank it up. Holly crap, it looks spectacular.

I love them both. I was a product of Franz, thank you for the good old days ….
Franz Klammer - the hero of my youth....
Wow! That was beautiful to watch! Thank you for sharing
Straordinari campioni! Grazie di questo video!
1:46. Happy to see Bode use the SLOW flag as a GS gate. I do the same thing, but I'm just pretending to be an Olympic skier.
In my defense, I pretend it's regular slalom in olden times when you didn't hit the rigid poles, so a very tight turn really is enough to slow down.
Noticed that too. I am sure he saw that sign way up ahead.
Slow flags at ski resorts usually mean that you need to speed up...
Just Wow that looked amazing.
Best video! Bode and franz. Wow!
You can really hear the tech bode was talking about through his turns.
The snow jibbered, but his ski bit. Wow!
I usually lose an edge on sugary ice... it scoops out... weird feeling. Like a rail vanished below my feet.
god this is one of my favorite ski channels
Love it. Thank you
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong was on here and saw your comment.
Super cool. I lived one year in Santa Fe and skied the basin I think 80 times that winter. Taos once that year... Good times.
Lucky for you Deb, thanks for sharing your wonderful experience.
One of my favorite videos of all time! Used to race in school in the late 70s and Franz was such an inspiration. Cut my chops at Cannon Mt in NH-later to be the home of Bodie Miller…he was at Cannon just two weeks ago. Thank you!
I was smiling through the ENTIRE video:) Thanks Deb!!!
SUPER DEB !Thank you for this video🎉😊❤
Really good Soundbites of (Franzzz) and ski footage is brilliant. All videos, instructional with you and Alan V. Great stuff. Thanks Deb
