Yoga is an ancient art invented by great treasure of knowledge acquired over thousands of years by yogis. I think there is nothing wrong in acknowledging their efforts and I feel its a way of showing gratitude to them. It may be counter productive or not as effective if you modify it without good understanding of it. And yes Yoga is a part of Hindu culture and not a part of Hindu religion. Hindus are not bound by any rules to do yoga everyday nor you should be a Hindu to perform yoga and also you won't become one if you practice it. If you still feel practicing yoga as it is, is a threat to your beliefs and it may drive people away, then as a human being, you should reconsider your reasoning. Hindu culture is not based on blind faith. It has a scientific side to it in the from of yoga and Ayurveda.
all I can say is your heart is full of hatred my friend.. we don't expect you to accept or follow Hinduism.. We never do.. All we expect is thank them for all the effort our ancient yogis put in for all of us .. but u can feel free not to..
+abraham sheer You tell your white women and gay brothers to stay away from YOGA, As for our bizzare religion WE LOVE IT, there is absolutely nothing you can fukking do about it.
dont see a problem with all these modifications of yoga BUT JUST DONT CALL IT YOGA. yoga is rooted in hinduism but can be used as an low impact form of exercise
charan chand bhai what do you mean by that. you are disowning your know heritage.Muslim do hajj Christian follows the holy order of Christ and hindu do yoga(karma yoga, bhaki yoga and jnana yoga)
yoga is a hindu practice , yoga is mentioned in the hindu scriptures like upanishads , vedas and geeta , yoga originated from lord shiva which is a major god in the hindu philosophy
In a free world, I suppose the mutation of Yoga into various forms is a hard reality.. but it can be blunted by the promotion of the core values that underpin YOGA as a practice.. But the fact that needs to be known is that Hinduism is a misnomer.. When the body is steady, and the mind is stilled, what NATURALLY emerges within oneself (a higher self other than the physical body) is the essence of Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism..
@2006minesh Yeah we hindus might have had yoga and meditation as part of our religion , rooted in our culture.... for thousands of years . But yoga along with Hinduism/Sanatana Dharma belongs to entire humanity . We are all brothers in humanity . What the west is doing is essentially the Asanas and calling it "Yoga" :-)
interesting documentary, as a European, i think it is Ok that yoga develops and changes into new branches, because everything changes. the food we eat, the music.. etc. In its roots it is the same thing, but the approach to it changes. There are millions of people in this world and different types to enter into yoga attracts different types of people. Before yoga was practiced only by Indian men, which is just half of the possible population. Today, various types of people find their style, hipsters, elderly, this who love trance music and so on And it is great! People find their own way. But it in the roots, it is still the same purpose - to practice asanas and also be true to your real self.
Thank you so much for posting this. I think it is a very good documentary.. Who owns yoga? We do. It is a personal practice and we take it where we need to... :) Namaste. :)
Yoga reduced to a show, a performance, a commercial commodity. What a shame! There are no two or more aspects of Yoga. Yoga is a Holistic Way of Life. One cannot deny the origin and roots of Yoga. One will be foolish to refuse the basic texts of Yoga. One cannot separated Yoga Practice, that is True Yoga Practice from Om, Namaskar, and the Hindu Cultural and Spiritual Values.
Anand Krishna Well, a true Hindu believes that change is the one permanent thing in the material world, so its futile to be rigid. Perhaps for someone on path to enlightenment, one can do it properly...but even if its done as an exercise, its not harmful, so who cares...Ya, as a hindu myself, I feel the normal human emotion of 'possessiveness' when people take it without due credit and adapt it without the hindu roots, but on hindsight, possessiveness is a human nature worth overcoming
My dear A. Shekhar - many thanks for your comments. I have statistics of working with more than 2000 people of a community that is engaged in the asanas on daily basis, almost religiously. Without practicing the other limbs, they become very hard, arrogant, even violent, endangering themselves and others. This is my concern. Namaste
Anand Krishna While I do not think it is good to take an aggressive stand against a stranger like you, I feel that fear mongering is a great disservice to our culture. I think Ramdev baba is more knowledgable than you, so I will definitely believe him and say that any yoga is good for you.Never fool an indian about yoga :)
My dear A. Shekhar please accept my pranaams, certainly you have the benefit of being an Indian, and perhaps in India, where there are so many yogis. I also agree with you that one should not "take an aggressive stand against a stranger". Indeed, Baba Ramdev and perhaps your good self are much much more knowledgable than me. Hence, i shall discount your rather judgemental and emotional statements about fear mongering and etcetera. I seek your blessings my dear brother, praam
Who owns yoga? Ans.1.08 billion SANATAN DHARMI aka HINDU own yoga. Yoga originated in India and was practice by hindu for almost four thousand years and the father of yoga is half snake half man Patanjali and supreme lord shiva which western world and usa calls a demon. calling a father of yoga a demon and then daily morning practicing yoga. usa and western world are such an Hypocrites
03:09 "...and that's why I think the asana aspect of yoga can be displayed as a competitive sport." What other aspect of yoga can be displayed as a competitive sport? Is there a contest for long one can sit in silence without fluctuations of the mind?
Does it matter if it was found in India...and is rooted in Hinduism????...If it works for our body, like paracetamol releases the headache, like water quenches our thirst, like food fills our hungry body, what is wrong in practicing it...???? It is for you and not for others! And those who are scared of being converted into Hindus, ask those Christians, Muslims and Buddhists around the world who have been to India and learnt Yoga from the traditional Yoga schools and their Gurus....they will be more understanding of ancient Indian tradition and Hinduism, but conversation is never part of Yoga culture, as Yoga is for all human beings,...it doesn't separate you or single you out, it treats you equally, as anyone else....Yoga unites the world...and never separates!!!!
I suppose the humanity, especially westerners, will continue to search for unique ways to advance economically, and physically. If yoga is the method of achieving this goal that people choose to use, then hopefully people will take on the proper philosophies and teachings from their practice, as opposed to using it for physical purposes only, or even attempting to make it religious, such as the Christian group...
As an Indian I have been thinking about whether Yoga in itself is 'cultural appropriation' lately, in my opinion it isn't - Yoga just like the martial art Tae Kwon Do is a practice that has arisen out of a culture, not a cultural entity in itself. If someone was to practice Yoga for their own personal fulfilment then I have no issue with such but unfortunately a lot of None Indian Yoga practitioners extend this further and begin to give themselves Indian names and wear Sari's, this is when it becomes completely unacceptable in my opinion - This is when someone is stealing my cultural identity and pretending that it's theirs. And using the excuse that you're 'Hindu' so you think it is justified to give yourself Indian names and wear Indian cultural attire doesn't cut it either, wearing a Sari does not make you more 'Hindu' and neither does calling yourself 'Narayan Mahadev'. Go ahead practice Yoga for your own mental and physical well being, but don't give yourself an Indian name and wear Indian clothes and pretend that that it's a part of your cultural identity, it's not - All you are doing is essentially stealing another people's culture.
I'm sorry but as an Indian, I have to tell you to stop being so sensitive. So what if a non-Indian wears saris or bindi? So long as it's not done to mock Indians, I see no problem with it. BTW, I notice you are writing in English. You do realize that it's not an Indian language, right?
Very interesting documentary. Oh my, there are so many yogis and teachers bending the purpose of yoga for their own ego, image or bank accounts, that it ruins the point of this holy practice.
interesting yoga sure is cool;i never even thought of anything but yoga being mine and to share and practice i love my yoga i call mine red road yoga i teach small classes with aboriginal teaching i am just beginning pls pray for me to introduce this with grace and fun a'ho ,my name is rae dawn
wow gr8 video. an eye opener. ppl can change anything to anything else and others just follow them. shows how gullible ppl r. yoga in disc !!wtf.. liked d vegans and d brazillian dude. And yes Yoga is 4 all.
I have been stretching and breathing all my life... Like every other living thing on this planet... No I don't "practice" yoga... I pay attention to what keeps my instrument (my body) well tuned, and if u naturally observe all of life and listen to your body, U will know instinctively what to do... Simple The western world is generally disconnected and searches for stuff to culturally appropriate and turn into a synthetic version of truth, which in turn takes all the benefits out of it. I just observe and say let them get on with it, and I am so thankful I did not forget what I naturally knew from birth... Which is what all nature & the universe knows. Truth is not taught, truth is recognised...
To the anchor: Why is there a need to contrast you being a hindu with you being an open minded person? Hinduism IS open minded. If you happen to know what it really is.
You guys are out of mind. Yoga is not a physical sport. This is a big mistake. Stupidity indeed has no limits and you have proven this. Read patanjali yoga sutra. Yoga is about meditation and meditation leads to automatic induced yogic postures and pranayama. This is ancient Indian wisdom. Not a sport where you compete against one another.
I am a Hindu ... I think it is inevitable that yogic practice will undergo modifications as west meets the east...but its ok...Well, a true Hindu believes that change is the one permanent thing in the material world, so its futile to be rigid. Perhaps for someone on path to enlightenment, one can do it properly...but even if its done as an exercise, its not harmful, so who cares...Ya, I feel the normal human emotion of 'possessiveness' when people take it without due credit and adapt it without the hindu roots, but on hindsight, possessiveness is a human nature worth overcoming
The real question is where is the origin of Yoga? It comes from Ancient rich Hindu civilization from the land which is called India today. It is extremely important to know the original source of any tradition like Yoga.. For example of the "Kung Fu" tradition of marcial art comes from China and chinese will be proud of it whether they practice it or not in real life. The Yoga which is not limited to just physical postures as it is known to West today. It is a very cast and rich tradition with ultimate objective of unitiing self with Supreme consciousness. So it is important to acknowledge the original source of Yoga and give the credit to the people who come from that region as they are the ones who kept this extremely ancient practice alive till today. So in that sense the modern Indians own it as it was a gifet from their ancestors.
Who owns yoga? God owns yoga, who is the ultimate reality(parabrahman) which manifests itself in many different forms and ways. Yoga is one of the six orthodox schools of sanatan dharma (the eternal way) if hindus think they own yoga they are speaking out of ahamkara(Ego or I do) and if some other people say yoga is not a spiritual practice they are being as ignorant as someone who says yoga belongs to a particular faith or group of people. It comes from the Lord it belongs to the Lord it leads to the Lord.

Yoga was derived from Hinduism, what you are talking about is commercial Yoga that is brought to the West. You need to read more about Yoga and Hinduism before making this statement that you did.
I mean I do understand human behavior to make everything competitive but yoga was supposed to be your personal thing but well whatever helps you I guess.
Learn yoga properly from proper guru.....cos some asanas increase heat.....for example there are three type sitting will increase body temperature and three type of sitting will lower body heat ( sitting for such long period may cos harm to internal organs but one hour sitting is not dangerous....so there are many things not disclosed like breathing techniques as I seen in many books or video..... When doing yoga....should avoid sweating ,so the place must be well ventilated.........
