  • Don't be intimidated by the word "philosophy"! At its heart, it's just the search for the truth, and all the different forms that search can take. In this video I explore why studying philosophy -- even as just a quick historical overview -- can add new dimensions and insights to science fiction and fantasy creations.

I love the OpenStax Philosophy book, my college text for Philosophy 101, didn't mention any non-Western schools of philosophy. Of course that was half a century prior.

I would also recommend the "History of Philosophy without any gaps" book series by Peter Adamson. Brilliant series that touches on basically every philosophical tradition globally, though the series isn't complete yet and is still being written

Philosophical investigations being hampered by religion is only a small part of the problem. Secularism did not move us past this sort of problem. Ideology is an obvious successor to religion. WE can think we are beyond it if we think we "don't have an ideology". But most likely, we are mistaken. Don't get me wrong, Mainly, I like the point of the post. But I think we need to consider that we might not have gone beyond the religion versus philosophy problem. Because, we are almost always unaware of all the irrational or pre-rational assumptions we are making. It can be very dramatic when a character realizes this. I think it is one of the best things about "The Dispossessed" by Ursula K Leguin when the main character comes to something like this realization.

Albert Camus was right, philosophy is nothing more than 'cope'. That's why it keeps changing and 'evolving'. Believing in your philosophy means you don't have to look into the actual void of meaning that is the real state of humanity.
