Would you be able to recommend the correct mounts needed for both c and d mount lenses for a canon 6d if possible please? The look you have captured looks incredible.
For a Canon 6D you would need C Mount to EF or D Mount to EF Adapter, the only issue is the flange distance. The lenses would only become macro, and infinity focus will not be possibly. I've mounted these to my 5D2, unfortunately only good for macro.
The colorgrade is very interesting to me, seems like it's extremely saturated and the highlight roll off is very harsh, but in a way it reminds me off the files that we used to get off of old standard defintion telecines with a one light pass. Modern day 16mm film will probably be scanned in cineon log, so the files will look a lot different, but this is a very interesting grade none the less
Thanks for sharing 👍 Grading was kept very minimal, pretty much just correcting exposure and applying curves due to the lack of contrast these lenses have. DaVinci Resolve has a distinct what of processing these RAW DNG Clips, I like it.
This is a very important comment. What colors a lot of younger folks' idea of "film" is the product of old school optical telecines, one light prints, workprints, dupes, etc that made their way onto modern TV, RUclips, disc, streaming sites.... People are stunned to see restorations or remastered old films that "look like they were shot yesterday" only because they'd never really seen what was on the negative. Even back in the day, the difference in visual characteristics between a film seen in theater one year and premiering on, say, ABC, the next, was vast.
@@stevenboone8883 Exactly, when I first saw the scans off of the spirit 4k compared to the old crt ursa diamonds, it blew my mind just how different the images look aside from resolution. Hell even when you compare modern music video/ads or movies shot on film compared to a hd remaster of seinfeld the colors are vastly different. Now days you can match digital to film or film to digital no problem due to the high fidelity of the scanners.
Great video! Any idea why my C mount super 16 lens collection, which is in pristine condition, only present a completely out of focus image circle when I attach them to my Canon 700D DSLR using a C to EF adapter?
That's becuase of the flange distance between EF mount and C mount Aapter. It would be fine with mirrorless bodies like the EOS M that has an Ef-m mount (better flange distance than EF)
@@ZeekEOSZ Of course. My brain clearly wasn't engaged. All that space for the reflex mirror means the c mount can not be mounted close enough on these SLR cameras. Got it. Thanks.
Wow, amazing results! Can you use the same techniques you described for the super 16mm look on a Canon Eos m2 or m10 that you used for the Canon Eos M?
The M2 has raw video but only one mode. In the 1080 mode you can enable a X3 crop which will work with these lens. The original M is overall better though. The M10 will have vignette.
Awesome video Zeek, thanks for sharing! I’ve also been playing around with a pistol grip and a viewfinder, and the one thing I miss is being able to use the trigger to start/stop recording. I will try and hack/rig up a RC6 remote to the trigger to make that work. I just don’t remember which setting to use to allow the RC6 to start and stop recording through magic lantern... does any one know?
Found it - by turning the camera into photo mode, and setting it to “self-timer: 10 sec/remote”, then going back to video mode, the RC6 remote will work to start/stop recording with magic lantern.
how satisfied are you when comparing your footage in RESOLVE vs on RUclips? I think your footage is very vibrant, i feel my footage always looks desaturated. Care to share your export settings from Resolve?
zeek, i have an idea. would you try the generic speedbooster with their own helios like bokeh, combine with the helios 44-2. the bokeh is insanely beautiful especially when shooting portrait with vegetation. can you try it with your anamorphic adapter. i can only imagine the insanity beautiful bokeh
I would really love to get the Helios 44-2, I'd prefer to get it locally as they can take months from Ukraine or Russia. But it would definitely be a killer with a speedbooster or an anamorphic Adapter.
How to to stabilise the camera though? I have the og bmpcc and even with the pistol grip I get these annoying micro jitters. Seems like a gimbal is a must for these smaller sensor cameras.
I generally always stretch out the neck strap till it's flexed enough. Stabilisation in post a little can help too. I do like gimbals and will use them more in the future, but hand held feels really natural to me.
@@siddj08 It can take getting used to. But the more you try to stabilise beforehand, the easier it's going to be in post. I stabilise in FCPX, not Resolve.
great content as usual Zeek. I am still confused about buying C mount lenses. I have purchased 3 different lenses on ebay and they all have vignette with the eos-m unless I use the 3x crop mode. What should I look for when buying a c mount lens to verify that it will cover the EOS-M sensor completely?
The Apollo Television 50mm F1.9 that I have covers the full Aps-C Sensor. The rest don't. Anything below 35mm is going to have a hard time. These lenses were designed for 16mm or Super 16mm format and not Super 35/Aps-c so expect vignette in the 1080 mode. All these C Mounts work great in X3 Crop, 2.5K, 2.8K & 5K FRTP Raw Mode. The Chines C Mount Lenses cover Apsc but I don't like the quality that much.

Does it matter what kind of used EOS M to get? I see that the 18 MP are on the more economical end, but 24MP ones are only slightly cheaper. I have Rebel 2i DSLR rig which is perfectly fine, but I'm kind of stuck with primes whereas I have a some nice c-mount zooms and wide angle lenses that would be really good for running-and-gunning type of filmmaking.

Hello Zeek! I want to make a microbudget short film, I am confused between the Eos M and Canon 5d mk2. What would you choose if you have to for a short film ? What would you suggest ? I haven't yet bought any. Likely to purchase 1 only. Love from India.
I compared the two here: ruclips.net/video/KE4SEqmuNqU/видео.html I really do love the 5D2. It just needs more ML Development, especially with Lossless Raw options. The EOS M would be my personal choice, due to more modes and I guess reliability. The 5D2 1080 Raw looks really nice, just stuck with Aliasing though.
Hey Zeek, I've just reopened MLVApp after a few months of inactivity and I can't find the 'Clarity' slider tool, usually I thought it was near 'Sharpen' which I know I can use but I think the Clarity tool gives way better looking details - any idea what might've happened to it? Cheers
very interesting and creative video. I was wondering if you could use a Sony A5000 and get similar results or is the software modes in the EOS-M unique to that camera/sensor? I believe I can get a Sony A5000 to C mount adaptor so if I can find the crop modes I guess it should work?
@@ZeekEOSZ I dont think the A5000 has the same RAW file crop formats that you mentioned in your video for the EOS-M I will have to dig and try compare. sure I can zoom the lens to avoid vignetting, if I understand what you did correctly, and I want the "cine film" look I think I need the sensor set to record within the normal frame size for 16mm or super 16mm.

You have to check out the company I'm back. They produce digital attachments for analog cameras, even medium format. You can shoot stills an video with them. I think shooting stuff with a medium format cam shoot get a nice feeling
Oh nice one 👍 I'm guessing you're using the EOS M? Normal crop 1080 is 1.6x, with other modes you get 2x crop (5K FRTP), 2.9x, 3x and around that mark.
Didn't get that chance recently, although I have in the past. Faster C Mount Lenses like F1.2/F1.4 will do pretty well, though post noise reduction may be required, otherwise YT Compression can help 😆👍
Panasonic G7, or GH1/GH2 are pretty good if Hacked, great alternatives with a Micro Four Thirds Sensor perfect for this type of stuff. The Original BMPCC used to be cheap, unfortunately not so much now.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for the help man! One more question though, is there a major difference between the g1 and the gh1 because I'm seeing a 150 dollar price difference between those two cameras

Without magic lantern, you will get vignette with C mount lens as you need the crop modes only magic lantern can provide. In the custom functions yellow wrench section in the Canon menu, enable release without shutter.

Isn’t much of the character created by the color grading / post processing? Yes I recognize the character of the difference lenses, but while looking I am struck by the fact that in my eyes, unless the lens has a very specific character, the PP is the dominant factor. I’d argue that in many cases uses these lenses with standard Canon style and no PP take away much of the vintage character we are seeing here. Of course color is more affected than B&W.
Now days you can match digital to film or film to digital no problem due to the high fidelity of the scanners.
super is the word
Got it. Thanks.

Thank you 😎🤘
Great footage 👏
Wow, amazing results! Can you use the same techniques you described for the super 16mm look on a Canon Eos m2 or m10 that you used for the Canon Eos M?
The M2 has raw video but only one mode. In the 1080 mode you can enable a X3 crop which will work with these lens. The original M is overall better though. The M10 will have vignette.

you are awesome!! Excellent video!!!!!
Great 😎👍 Awesome accessories 🎥💯

ah no woodend in these clips.
zeek, i have an idea. would you try the generic speedbooster with their own helios like bokeh, combine with the helios 44-2. the bokeh is insanely beautiful especially when shooting portrait with vegetation. can you try it with your anamorphic adapter. i can only imagine the insanity beautiful bokeh
I would really love to get the Helios 44-2, I'd prefer to get it locally as they can take months from Ukraine or Russia. But it would definitely be a killer with a speedbooster or an anamorphic Adapter.

Hello Zeek, is it possible to make this set up with EOS M 100 ? What do you think about that cam? Thank you from Brazil
Hi zeek do u think a hasselblad Pistol grip would work with the canon eos m?
If it has a 1/4" then yeah ;)
Hi! Great vid mate, how long you can record in one take with eos m, can I create a song cover video with this camera? (5-7 minutes in one take)
Yes you can. It's continuous Raw in all modes except 2.8K, unless you reduce the resolution a little.
@@ZeekEOSZ I'm still trying to master that neck strap tension. What do you do during post? In Davinci?
@@siddj08
It can take getting used to.
@@ZeekEOSZ hey zeek. I am a beginner but looking to go into film. This is a noob question but the t1.9 would work fine in filming aside from portraits like you said?
Would any of these lenses be good with the camera in low light, and if not what would you recommend? Thanks!
Yes they would. There are even some with f1.2.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thank you so much man. Your channel is super helpful and I just went on and bought the M. Great to know they'll work well with it in low light!
@@FMSorcerer Exporting as DNG with these is the best in MLV App. DaVinci denoiser works superb if needed. The M is not a good high ISO Camera, but it can be useable if exposed correctly. I never go beyond 320 ISO.

C-Mount lenses won't work on a super35 sensor in 4K right ?
Not sure what camera you're using though. Sony have clear image zoom, the EOS M with Magic Lantern has crop modes from X2, x2.96 and higher.
Hey there, I ve owned a Canon EOS M for a while and magic lantern does wonders with it! I was thinking buying a 16mm lens for it but Im not sure if it will vignete, I know 16mm film has a 3x crop factor but I was wondering if I could use a 16mm lens on 3k mode at 2.39:1, thanks in advance for your answer
Yes you sure can. I use 7.5mm with B4 TV Lenses works fine. I also own a Cosmicar 16mm F1.4, no vignette.
If you want to shoot RAW Video, only the M and M2 have that capability. The original is better with more RAW Video modes.
Hey I'm working on shooting a horror and it looks really perfect and grainy on the camcorder. It's just that it's super dark I'm wondering if there's any way to simulate on a eos m or similar setup I've got the M2. The footage looks perfect it's just a bit dark.
Hello Zeek! I want to make a microbudget short film, I am confused between the Eos M and Canon 5d mk2. What would you choose if you have to for a short film ? What would you suggest ? I haven't yet bought any. Likely to purchase 1 only. Love from India.
I compared the two here:
ruclips.net/video/KE4SEqmuNqU/видео.html
I really do love the 5D2. It just needs more ML Development, especially with Lossless Raw options. The EOS M would be my personal choice, due to more modes and I guess reliability. The 5D2 1080 Raw looks really nice, just stuck with Aliasing though.
It looks nice
Mine vignettes using c-mount lenses. Is there a way to avoid the "Shooting through a tunnel" look?
Hey Zeek, I've just reopened MLVApp after a few months of inactivity and I can't find the 'Clarity' slider tool, usually I thought it was near 'Sharpen' which I know I can use but I think the Clarity tool gives way better looking details - any idea what might've happened to it? Cheers
It should "definitely" be there. From memory it should be just under "tint" in the Processing section. 👍
thank you so much!!!!!!!!! you are a life savior!!!
No Problem :)
Minor question, but I'm curious: Does the pistol grip actually help stabilize the camera, or is it just for aesthetics?
What version of Magic Lantern are you using for the Eos M?
Can't remember for this one. But the build I use is in the description of my channel trailer for the Eos m.
very interesting and creative video. I was wondering if you could use a Sony A5000 and get similar results or is the software modes in the EOS-M unique to that camera/sensor? I believe I can get a Sony A5000 to C mount adaptor so if I can find the crop modes I guess it should work?
You could with the Sony if you use have clear image zoom to crop in the sensor and avoid vignette
@@williamoneill5498 Sony A5000 sensor is similar to Super 35. With the Eos m and Magic Lantern RAW, I can utilise crop modes to crop further into the sensor, shoot raw video and get a filmic look with these old glass.

Maybe all very obvious, but the emphasis of this video was on the lenses and iirc apart from using B&W there was little or no word about PP. all meant constructively, nice work and thanks for sharing the passion (2 years old, I know).
