    I love this. It's crazy how zooms are slowly becoming so relevant, when I was in film school a zoom instantly made your project "less cinematic" This was at a time where gimbals were just becoming more accessible and smooth tracking shots were considered the peak of getting that cinematic look. But I was truly enthralled with how all these shots turned out here, it's something so different from what we see these days. Maybe the key to that cinematic look is just making something look different, elevating an image to a type of surrealism.

    • @danielp_adams
      @danielp_adams  8 месяцев назад +6

      Everything old is new again haha. But i really do feel that these 10x zooms open up so many options for creative shots, i kinda only showed a few in this video but you can really get some interesting shots. To me, to be cinematic it helps if the shot or sequence makes you feel something. In this case the slow zooms, type of shots, color, and subject make me feel like this was a snapshot of past times and i'm just observing in a nostalgic way.
      Thanks for watching!

      The film i made in college, had alot of zooms and didnt lean into the shallow dof look unless it was a tighter shot.
      Besides a singular iphone its a timeless look.

    As someone who has recently become equally as obsessed with the idea of making digital footage look like 16mm film this is really cool to see! There's some gold out there but there's also way too many videos claiming they've created the "ultimate" method for "epic swag 16mm vintage retro cinematic b roll" yet all the footage is filmed on a full frame camera at f1.4 on a gimbal lmao. Also, the Shaun of the Dead crash zooms were perfect, can't wait to see what comes next!

      Those were my thoughts exactly! Thanks for watching!

  • @YuvalAloni
    @YuvalAloni 8 месяцев назад +5

    Exactly my experience these last few months.
    Actually shooting on a 16mm super lens gives much of that missing piece in creating 'the film look'.
    It's not just the look itself in terms of color, flares etc.. but just the practical way in which you have to use it and the sensor size etc.

    • @danielp_adams
      @danielp_adams  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Yuval! That's for sure! Shooting with the smaller sensor gives you a more similar depth of field and final look. It also greatly reduces rolling shutter (not present in film). It will be hard getting the film look shooting a full frame sensor at f1.4 haha 😬. Big fan of your channel by the way! cheers!

    I was fortunate enough to shoot s16 on an old ARRI SR2 back in film school. There's a discipline that it forces you to learn which I feel is so lacking in most things I see filmmakers shoot today.

Only problem is that, as it was built to be a budget stills lens, it makes hard clicked aperture changes during zooms, messing with exposure while adjusting the zoom. I wonder if it might be possible to rehouse its glass in a more manual set of tubes and gears to get it working better for 1970s zooms. Probably cheaper to find a better 10x zoom for my APS-C Sensor BMPCC6KG2 camera.

    I shoot S16 digital too, super fun. Much more affordable lenses if you know a trick or two and where to look.
    I got a 21x S16 Cinezoom that cost a bare fraction of what I spent on an old old old 10x S35 cinezoom.
    I would go the S16 zoom any day of the week, now over S35 cinezoom. 21x ratio and a full macro switch is just too good to give up.

      I know the fact your video is graded very well(Halation, grain and…, but is that only the lens that made your video looks so natural, filmic and so real as negative(Film) ? Cause I have seen a lot of tutorials and so far none of them have been even close to your real filmic vibe that can not be explained by words:)

    • @danielp_adams
      @danielp_adams  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@alibirang9921 thanks! It’s a mix of a bunch of things. Shooting 16mm crop sensor changes the way you shoot (deeper depth of field). The lens helps a lot in the way it renders the image (sharp but not digital) and the colors it produces. And the final touch is the color grade. When it all comes together you can achieve this look 👍🏼

    So you didn't shoot on 16mm film, you shot on a lens for 16mm cameras...?

  • @The-Travel-Man
    @The-Travel-Man 8 месяцев назад

    Kodak still makes 16mm film. If you really want to have a 16mm film look, you don't go through pains and expense of buying a single telephoto lens, you buy/rent a Bolex camera and a bunch of Kodak Vision film stock instead. Kudos for trying, but it is not a visible grainy 16mm look, nor is it the experience. Lewis Potts as in his namesake channel, shows how to achieve a real 16mm look with the real 16mm film camera.
