I'm a Prosthetist with over 30 experience and have to admit that I've always approached teaching running for above knee amputees with some trepidation. This video has taught me more in a half hour than in my previous 30 years. Informative, concise and inependant of component supplier. An excellent guide which I'm sure to share with fellow clinicians and patients. Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and let us know how helpful this video has been for you and your patients. Our team is thrilled to know that our educational content is reaching the right professionals, who in turn are changing the lives of patients! We hope that you continue to find our resources helpful. As a prosthetist you may be interested to know that we have received approval from the ABCOP board for CEU credits for CPOs for both our Level I Course (virtual and in-person), and our Level 2 Certificate in Prosthetic Gait Rehabilitation. Just in case you are ever interested in/or looking for continuing education for yourself or colleagues. Thank you and wishing you much success with your patients!
i am so happy i found this video. i just got a running blade donated to me and have been figuring it out on my own. no therapists, no fancy gyms just me and my street. this video has certainly helped!!! thank you!!
Thank you for this! I tried to run yesterday without instruction. It’s didn’t go well. I’m going to try this each day this week. I’ll share it on my channel for other amputees!
Lol ,if you can run, there's hope i can walk and do well in my gardening. 😊Edit: A new below knee amputee. Going for my first visit to prosthetic clinic. Gives me hope that i can get fitted and walk. I don't care about running, unless i have to,maybe a snake i come across rarely in my many gardens. They are looking sad right now, cause i have missed so far fall clean up,tho weather here in Central Georgia has been more Spring like. Fewer hours of daylight has made the treed go into dormancy, giving us beautiful colors of fall because we have yet to have a frost. I'll get to it. Surprisingly my roses are loving the light breezes, cooler temps, staying in the 70's. Haven't done anything to them since i dead headed them and fertilized all of them back mid August. I guess sometimes just leaving them alone let nature do it's thing is good. I do have my neighbor water them twice a week. He's a good neighbor. He asked about cutting my grass, but as he started the mower wasn't cutting right. Leaving a streak. New blades were needed. He never got around to doing it. He had his own lawn and many jobs to do. I got my son to come over and heloed me get on the mower. Quite easy. I cut for hours, pushing one way doi wouldn't have a hay field look. Aw the beauty and relief of getting done. Leaves are falling. Not worried about it. Tho I'm a person with slight OCD. It's ok for them to cover everything in the winter. Probably helps many things. I will tackle it when i get my prosthetic. Glad to see they have ones where you can bend your knee. I was worried about that.
All I did was run before my car accident and just recently got an X3 .. I am beyond excited to get going again. I naturally just do the hop skip run but that is annoying and no where near the potential of what I have to offer. I can see some AK who run pretty smoothly and I know I can get there but re-training is frustrating, especially with no one on one help or area to really practice. I know I’ll get there as I’m extremely motivated to do this and I need that freedom of running back in my life. Thanks for this, I’ll keep working at it 💪🦿
So glad to be of assistance during this time. We recommend finding a physical therapist to provide the one on one help while learning this complex motor skill!
@@jobinkaruvelil Can't answer for him, but mine started to lessen by the time the sutures and staples came out, amputation (AKA) 7 July of this year, lessening since around 18 August. Bad weather or high activity it still hurts at times, but no pain most of the time. Had my socket fitting today, leg comes in 9 November. Prayers coming your way.
@@kevinfox500 Hi, my brother had an accident last Saturday, it’s been 5 days and he started to walk with crutches. After your surgery, how long did it take for you to go on rehab/training? And also, how long does it take to get your prosthetic leg? Is it painful to wear a prosthetic leg? I am really worried about him. Do people get the rigid big prosthetic at the hospital or like the one the guy in the video? He had a 99% mortality accident, he was the 1%, he knows he had a second chance but I know he’ll feel frustrated the next months. The saddest thing, the accident wasn’t even his fault, it as a hit and run, he was on his way to work on his motorcycle. Merry Christmas Eve.
@@DianaMartinez-eq5ns missed one. Generally, the prosthetic toy are.aet.up with has a locking knee, left in the locked position until your therapist has worked with you, and feels.you are ready to learn how tonwalkneith it unlocked, on level ground. Your specialist will.set it up to be manually locked for uneven ground. When you first ret it, it is set to locked, with a release, to unlock.it to sit. It is modified later to be set to lock or unlock, as desired.
That practice floor surface, would give me alot of confidence, to learn something new, as l would feel, if l fell, it would be less damaging than a hard surface. Interestingly, each of the rehabilitation units l have visited, for a fit, or a lesson, are too small in length to walk, this is as damaging as walking on the wrong foot. That outcome can never be the best, the individual could achieve. Going into rooms such as those, with that knowledge, empowers you, to ask more, and more questions, which may assist to a better mutual understanding, of what is really required. (That crossover shoe is also a critical choice).
It's so interesting paying close attention to the motions of a foot. Smart prosthetics would make a big difference. I assume it becomes easier like riding a bike ?
Might be a stupid question but, what if there was a track above the patient and they were following it with their hand on a lead as they become more accustomed to the musculature necessary for running as well as give them freedom to take more chances as an education on what they can or should do without the lead in their hands? My theory is they will rely on the safety of the lead less and less as the become more motion confident, which help me in Breaking the Barrier of walking... less and less Reliance on assistance as the confidence developed.
I was born without my left foot and ankle so I've always been a BK, but next Monday I'm having an AKA done, how long does it generally take for someone to get to this point?
There are many factors that play into how long it would take. Examples include previous history of running, overall health and fitness, prosthetic fit, and many more. It does take a long time for most everyone. Even when things go well it can be 6 months or more before people are getting to the point of running.
What have you found to be the best suspension method for amputees to run in? I saw the second patient had a sleeve suspension and he seemed to be running pretty well. I am interested in like after 10 miles or longer distance how different suspension methods hold up. I was looking at the lady who ran the marathon des Sables and looked like she was running a pin suspension which according to textbooks can create more up and down movement in the socket. Just was hoping you would share your thoughts since you have a lot of experience. Also appreciate that running is an invaluable skill for amputees
I am a amputee above my knee plus also I got blood clots on both my lungs.I was walking on a prosthetic leg four years but had to stop because of high blood pressure.would I be able to start walking again please.
Also what are your thoughts on Osseointegration and running? I’m seriously considering getting the surgery but am really on the fence as I am pretty active . I have been dealing with sockets for about 15 years now and honestly they suck lol. Osseointegration seems like an awesome idea at this point. Do you think it can handle running and jumping though? Would love your feedback!!
It is difficult to say what would be the best option for you without performing a proper evaluation. We recommend seeking advice from your physician to see what would be the best option for you. There is a long rehabilitation process involved with the healing of osseointegration (over a year!) and high impact activity, such as running and jumping, is not recommended during that time.
@@MissionGait thanks so much for your input and knowledge. I will definitely keep all of this in mind as I make a decision in the days or months to come. I’m In no serious rush to get Osseointegration but it definitely intrigue’s me . I plan on speaking with some of my doctors about run training as well (with my current socket setup) All of the clinics I have been to in MN where I currently reside just simply do not have a proper area in size to get that nice training like you get in at your location. I’m sure there is somewhere around the metro and if so I will find it . If nothing else I’ll just have to learn in a park lot !
There are a lot of factors that determine someone's mobility potential. Unfortunately we can't provide insight for you as that is best done by a local physical therapist, requiring an examination of your current mobility and medical history.
There are many things that could influence this decision. We can only suggest that you contact a local clinician that can provide an evaluation to help.
There are better prosthetic components for running, but these are often out-of-pocket as they differ from usual walking components. However, many prosthetic knees and feet are capable for use in running. It would be best to reach out to a prosthetist to learn more about a specific device.
Recommendation: Please show the demonstrations first, then come back and talk about them as the explanations were too much before seeing the demonstrations; too much information before demonstrations. Great stuff thanks
