I do love how the term "Keetorange" has stayed as the preferred term for that colour long since two generations of Bionicle have come and gone. Keetongu wasn't even that major of a character, he just pioneered a colour of brick
It's even funnier when you remember that the color predates him by a couple years. Gukko beaks, for instance. Buuuut Keetongu was visually distinct enough for the color to become practically associated with him, so yah.
The problem of this set is that it uses quite a lot of pieces for so little effect. This might just be one of the most uninspired sets Lego made in a very long time. Minifigs are pretty good and some details are indeed nice, but there's just so much stuff that's only there because the designer had to meet a certain price point.
Yeah they could've got rid of the mechanisms for spinning the characters and dumping the crates and made it just a thin slab and got the same use out of it since those features don't really work. From there it could've been a lot better price with fewer pieces, or they could've used those pieces for something that actually worked. Either way this is just 4 $12.50 mini figures and that's insane.
I just think the most fundamental problem of this set is the fact that they have done this set before… at a $20 price range. The Anakin vs. Obi Wan and the Rey vs Kylo Ren duel sets, are very much identical to this (the two spinning bases, the terrain that can split apart, the collapsible play features), but at a much cheaper price. It just baffles me that they went this route to add 30 extra dollars just for two more figures!
@@treefiddy3033 a hundred more pieces that don't do anything though, the point is that they could have made it a lot smaller while still having the same main features.
This should have been the $20 size set. Mustafar should have been this size because the Mustafar duel set piece is huge with lots of areas to recreate.
The real issue is that you're paying $50 for a generic rock slab with some lava and some cool minifigs. When you can pay the same price for an entire vehicle (the most recent X-Wing), it's hard to justify something like this. It really should be a smaller set at a lower price point like some of the other duel sets. At the very least, they could've made the sand like.... not gray, I dunno. I doubt that's exactly a hot take, but still
Personally I feel that the terrain should be a different colour, Mapuzo or however it's spelled was a more desert like planet with dead shrubs and things like that but anyway, I would be happy if it were more dark tan maybe.
Well, given how much it looks like a kindergarten kid could have thrown it together based on a still of the scene it is overpriced. I get your point, but that doesn't change the perception of getting very little real value here. And I think that is in itself a point: Had they sold this as an even more plain set e.g. with a grey 16 x 16 plate and some random slopes for 30 EUR/ USD it would be perceived quite differently. The set is pretending to be more than it can hold and that is it's downfall.
Yeah, Jang is about as perfect a toy reviewer as you'll get. Something about his delivery is so...nice, that I actually binge watch his videos from time to time to relax, something I never do with other toy reviewers. And of course, he's the go to guy if I want to know how good a set is, I trust in his opinions more than anyone. If only he reviewed other toys too
Eh. I thought the scene itself worked perfectly fine as "cat catches mouse and torments it halfway through the story 'cause the hero's at his lowest point, the REAL fight comes at the end of the season," but to make a whole big set out of it? A patch of dirt with some fire? That's weak.
Well, I think the "real" fight doesn't offer much to base a set on either. Just plain terrain and 2 figures. Even the Scythe has very little screen time, so LEGO really didn't have much to work with and was probably forced by Disney to still make sets on the show.
I like how since Disney didn’t show them the final battle between the two they were like let’s just have LEGO make a set about burning a beloved character halfway through the show, this might be one of the most violent sets to come out
To be fair, they have referenced the… *ahem*… “barbecued Anakin” scene quite a few times in the past decade in both their sets and televised content. So in comparison, this actually isn’t that bad…
While not overpriced by 2022 standards (but it is over priced IMO), the build is genuinely one of the worst I've seen in an official set, it's so bland.
I find it so strange that they would model this fight when the second one had so much more scope for an interesting duel set: the stone pit, the rocky pillars with some olive and greens to cut the tedious sand grey - even a new “damaged” Vader figure could have been offered! (apologies, I invoke the same spoiler shield that Jang did!) Fair enough, you lose the imperial figure and the droid, but those feel like bonuses in a mediocre set as is. I don’t see how the timing is that much of a factor given said episode was released mere weeks after. Missed opportunity, if you ask me.
I completely agree. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Lego makes that scene eventually. Even Obi-Wan's attire is different, and I doubt Lego would miss the opportunity to create a figure with the Jedi robes he wears later on in the show.
I do kinda hope this is sort of a stepping stone kind of set. I really like the idea of sets where the terrain or landscape is the main focus of the build, even if this one is pretty bland. Something like the little vignettes they've been releasing (the trash compactor, trench run, etc...) but much more affordable.
This doesn’t feel real. I can’t believe they green lit this set. Wouldn’t be surprised the set does well on the other hand simply because Lego Star Wars fans will buy anything they make. Bland design is being rewarded by fans who will buy anything Disney allows. Really hope this doesn’t become the regular for lego sets.
Yeah same as how some figures have jumped up massively in the last couple of years (e.g. Captain Rex and Cloud City Boba each increased about 6x in the last 2 years after many years of pretty stable value). The new generation of LSW fans have more money than sense and LEGO is taking full advantage of that.
Especially given that Starkiller base set they released in 2019 with the spinning disks for dueling, I find it shocking how this set got past testing given the figures don't touch eachother unless you really lean them forward and place them right on the edge of the disk
keep the Minecraft cart, drop the tilting on that. put a 'pull tab' on the edges to activate the line of flaming crystals remotely and add a couple of gears like you said. Rock'em Sock'em Jedi.
HAHA! "Try spinning, that's a good trick!" - Jang and some kid.. Heh.. i LOVE Jang's dry, half-silly half-bemused style when he tries to play with the "action feature" and gets underwhelmed. I would love to see what real kids think of this turntable saber-duel thingie. Hilarious:) nice work Jang! and Lego designers, great work on the vehicles, colors and figures here. Also the terrain. :)
If they were going to do a scene from Obi-Wan, they really should have gone with the final battle between Obi-Wan and Vader. They could have had a lot more play-value by including both columns with mechanisms that allow them to be toppled onto the figs as well as a pit for Vader to push Obi-Wan into. They might even have included a second, ruined Vader helmet if they were going to go to the trouble of making a new molded figure.
Honestly, I LIKE that it’s a big gray slab. It’s got plenty of knobs to place minifigs on for a display. This makes for a good base of a scene, throw in a tent or turret, looks pretty nice.
I actually really like the way this looks once you’ve set up all the stuff, like obi wan and Vader on their rotating platforms, the rocks popped up etc…
My copy of the set came with slight misprints. The Obi-wan and Darth Vader face prints had the black colors shifted slightly to the right, as if they ware looking away to the side, and Tala’s cap has the small symbol on the top, which was also shifted to the right. Not too much of a problem but it does sometimes feel off to look at.
With some of these latest waves of lego star wars, and with me getting more and more lego minecraft stuff. I can say i really dont buy sets anymore for just the figures. With the only exception being the battlepacks.
I saw this set at Costco today for $40. Unfortunately I already got it at full price, but hopefully someone else can benefit from this info! (I may not be the first to point this out…I didn’t make it through all the comments before posting. Apologies if it’s a repeat!)
It's easier to spin fight them before the crystals spilled just like in the show. After that, Vader lifts and force chokes Obi Wan and runs his body through the fire. So the play feature isn't quite as bad as u think. I agree that it should have been geared and I think the other play feature didn't stop it from happening. Both would be geared separately and can be done easily but then it would have been even more expensive. The set should be made in tan. As far as the print on Ned B's back, I'm pretty sure every backpack/ jetpack add on has been printed. Granted, they where always 1x1's
The dual molded dark gray legs with black boots were first introduced with Batman in 2015. There is no reason to not use them for Imperial Officers since then except that LEGO trying to save a few cents!
The price of Lego as of late does not make sense... no kid could afford Lego except as a gift... I use to do lawn work and save for months as a kid just for small to medium size sets.. now that affordability is gone I think...
that's why they are going down..a know a lot of people who don"t buy much lego anymore because it's becoming a toy for rich people.....I boycot buying lego until the prices become normal again...
For this to be retailing for the same cost as the downsized versions of Boba Fett's Starship/Slave I and Luke Skywalker's X-Wing, both from last year and both have been cheaper nowadays, is silly. It's essentially those duel sets from the past, such as Duel on Mustafar, which had the rotating sections for each figure like this, but was a lot smaller, and thus a lot less costly at $20 at the time. I sympathise for the designer of this, it's tough to try and imagine what to do and make based on so little info, how limited the stuff that's interesting in the scene to include and the budget, which was far too high in this instance ironically.
A very bizarre and questionable decision to make THIS scene and location as a set. But, if it had to look so boring, the least LEGO could have done was let you remotely operate those turntables, so it's at least fun to play with! Oh yeah, why does Obi-Wan have red hair and beard? Doesn't he have brown hair?
I bought it for ~37€ and i think it is a fair price for the Figs and the bricks. The build itself is somehow "useless" for me but i can see reusing the parts and also Kids reusing them for different builds. Overall not as bad as many frame it.
The base would need to be a brick or two higher for Technic pieces to fit underneath to operate the round plates for minifigure movement control from the cart side.
I prefer the stiff capes because I find the soft ones stretch very easily, especially when kids play with them. Other than that I don't know if I'd pay that much even if it was a scene I did like, much less one I didn't. More stormtroopers.
I'm definetly buying this for the figures and the parts for MOCs. The build itself is horrendous but those wedges and slopes are gonna be useful for me. Defo gonna wait till its 35€ or something and get it.
This set is an over sized grey platform. The Mustafar duel set SHOULD have been this size because there is actually lots of memorable areas to recreate in the Mustafar duel location. This is just a grey flat space. Could have been just a few plate pieces and would have had the same effect.
I got this set, and it’s kinda underrated lol. I did give Tala the duel molded legs and Darth Vader silver nobs on the face. But even before the mods I gave them, The figs are pretty cool, and the set it’s is pretty ok. Not great, but it’s ok.
I personally think that 50$ for this terrain set is abysmal. Mostly due to it being a terrain peice. Yes it has some nice sought after minifigs but 50$ is crazy to me. Maybe if they had some kind of small vehicle that was in the area it would be more reasonable.
If you're going to use the play features, or use the terrain pieces in mocs, then its a good set for the price. If you're going to display it on a shelf then it's too expensive for a display stand
In my opinion this set isn't worth the price. It would spend max. $20.00 for this. However it's quite nice and the minifigures are also amazing. Great video! Keep it up!!
I actually would be fairly happy with a $40 price tag, which can be achieved with the standard 20% discount. This set still has grown on me so much from when I first saw images. The designers did the best they could with this scene given what they had. I 100% believe that if they had more access to more scenes from the show this would not exist. To me, saying this is nothing more than a gray baseplate with some figures on it is a gross oversimplification of what this set actually is
When I bought it, it was mainly for the minifigures. I figured that the build wasn't all that so I could just unassemble it and put it in my piece collection. However, the build is an excellent example of a build that is alot better in person. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It's an excellent set all around.
Costco is selling the set at 39.99 and I thought that was a fair price. This is the cheapest set with a Vader with arm prints so I was looking forward to it.
In opinion, they should have just removed the flame effect popping out and concentrated on the turntable given that this is a "Versus" set. That would bring the part count down and might bring down the price.
The problem with the set I think is. It is trying to do too much for $50/£45. It is trying to be a play set and a diorama at the same time at a low price point. However if you want it as a diorama it is sortable if your lucky to have had a Lego Store or buy bricks from Lego. The set makes a really good blank slate to make a great diorama with additional trans orange cheese slopes and some trans orange flame pieces and some more grey and tan pieces to build up the landscape.
a store I go to regularly actually has this for 35. not interested in Star Wars but yea that's actually not an unreasonable discount to expect to find, at least in germany
I’m gonna be honest having the set in person is better than the pictures give it credit but I agree it falls a bit flat but I plan on adding to mine and I’d say for the minifigures it’s kinda worth it
Lego Boardroom 2yrs Ago: “Does anyone have any $30 ideas for the Obi Wan vs DV fight scene? Just keep in mind: we’re gonna have to hike the price to $50 when the set releases tho…” Developer: “Say no more Fam!”
Honestly? I fully agree with the idea that this is a fair price. This is bigger than the Fighter tank, bigger than the Obi-Wan Starfighter, and even outsizes last year's Boba Fett starship. The four figures are all extremely well made, with the easiest to acquire arm printing Vader yet, a great Obiwan, plus the fantastic Ned packing in and the Tala that can double as a random imperial. This set has great presence on a shelf as a diorama piece while still offering decent play for kids. That's what I take away from this and I do not feel like I was overcharged at all like I do with the fighter tank or the Justifier.
There is a distinct lack of High Ground here. For a set featuring me, that is unforgivable.
I do love how the term "Keetorange" has stayed as the preferred term for that colour long since two generations of Bionicle have come and gone. Keetongu wasn't even that major of a character, he just pioneered a colour of brick
I remember getting Keetongu back in the day just for his unique colour scheme.
I personally love the way Jang says it too. (Medium Azur is a close second)
It’s like how borock and paraka eyes have stuck
It's even funnier when you remember that the color predates him by a couple years. Gukko beaks, for instance. Buuuut Keetongu was visually distinct enough for the color to become practically associated with him, so yah.
Depending on the region, Oohnorak might have been the first too. But yeah, it's nice to still hear the term in use!
The problem of this set is that it uses quite a lot of pieces for so little effect. This might just be one of the most uninspired sets Lego made in a very long time. I got this set the day it came out, its a decent playset with really good figs
If you're going to use the play features, or use the terrain pieces in mocs, then its a good set for the price. If you're going to display it on a shelf then it's too expensive for a display stand
I think it’s misusing two figs to fix the price. Or maybe a random speeder for Vader to crush(even tho he doesn’t in the show)
i can see me and my son playing this like the boxing game where you have to knock out the head to win
To me, saying this is nothing more than a gray baseplate with some figures on it is a gross oversimplification of what this set actually is
I actually like this set I can’t lie, I think it’s a good display piece and captures the scene well
Completely agree - would only buy for mini figures and $50 is too much for only 4. Look at th upcoming $100 office set - 15+ Minifigures
When I bought it, it was mainly for the minifigures. I figured that the build wasn't all that so I could just unassemble it and put it in my piece collection. However, the build is an excellent example of a build that is alot better in person. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It's an excellent set all around.
The Ned-B carries this set.
I agree the set is good but the ground should be sand brown than gray
This set only needed like 150 pieces for the platform, and the set could've been $20.
Ahah the glorified grey slab
Honestly surprised they didn’t use a BURP in this 😂
Can you do the Lego Aqua raider Tiger shark attack?
a store I go to regularly actually has this for 35. not interested in Star Wars but yea that's actually not an unreasonable discount to expect to find, at least in germany
Ohhh so that's how the elastic goes, nice
I’m gonna be honest having the set in person is better than the pictures give it credit but I agree it falls a bit flat but I plan on adding to mine and I’d say for the minifigures it’s kinda worth it
Lego Boardroom 2yrs Ago: “Does anyone have any $30 ideas for the Obi Wan vs DV fight scene? Just keep in mind: we’re gonna have to hike the price to $50 when the set releases tho…”
Developer: “Say no more Fam!”
I have this set, should I use the parts for custom stuff
Obi-Wan is sporting a sweet mullet.
still difficult to convince myself to buy this without significant discount, really want the figs thou ...
The playing element is so stupid and I LOVE it!
I like your honesty you dont suck up to lego
Well done.
How would you rate non lego products ?
Not an ideal set, but I like that it is landscape, something that I always miss in Lego sets.
Jang I think the lightsaber battle part would work better if you make the “zhoom-zhoom” lightsaber sounds.
LEGO Star Wars 2022 8+ 75334 Obi Wan Kenobi VS Darth Vader Set
Not my favorite set, but Jang looks like he's having fun battling vader and obi. I want Jang to have fun while reviewing these.
