- Straight off their 2014 release "The Red Album," Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Molly Venter come together at the Briafcliff Sessions to film an intimate acoustic version of their namesake song, Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning"

since I heard Richard Thompson do this, I thought that was the definitive version, and it is...but this turns the blueprint inside out and puts a delicacy on lyrics that the harmonies breath a whole differt life...just sheer beauty..

First time I heard this song was on Ozone Pete's cd "strictly ozone". Later I heard him play it at a British motorcycle meet in Connecticut & I complemented him on his lyrics. He laughed and thanked me for the compliment, but said he wasn't the writer, it was Richard Thompson.

The more videos I see of Red Molly and the more I listen to their music - I have two of their CDs by now - the more I realize: This is not "just" a great band - this is one of the best bands ever: Their covers are done perfectly (like this one) and their songwriting is just as good. How often does this happen: Three equally fantastic musicians coming together, each of them with a special identifyable individual voice and harmonizing like that at the same time?

Awesome blend of voice, instruments and interpretation - these women brought something new and refreshing to a classic Thompson song. Hope they are still together and producing music of this calibre available on RUclips. I also really like Dick Gaughan's version too - as a fan I've listened to his Scottish songs - trad and contemporary - for two decades or more so his brogue is familiar to me - but double-dutch to others, I've been told. Surely not Vincent 52 though as it's such a well-known song.
Great that you captured the soul of the song as well as a nod to the virtuosity of the original. Plenty of covers out there are just shouty and growly, and don't give the song the type of respect you have, at the same time as adding your own unique stamp. Off to listen to more!

Vincent Black Lightning is one of the most perfect songs ever written or performed, and you have done the song great justice. Richard Thompson would be proud. You give it a whole new feel, sung from the vantage of Molly herself. Best to you, I am a new Red Molly fan.
