This 10-minute video clip shows you how to make a cattle mineral feeder from a barrel and truck tire. It is portable, it keeps the mineral dry, and it is inexpensive to make.
Our vet told us about these feeders. We have made eight (8) of these mineral feeders for our Lowline Angus Cattle and they work very well! Cheap, easy and they keep the minerals dry in our very wet climate. Thanks for sharing your great idea!
This is realy great design. I made something like this but smaller for my feeder pigs. They kept tipping it over so i had to bolt the tire to a 3/4"4x8 sheet of plywood.
I tried a different style of base as the tire was a bit bulky to my liking. Made an X from 4*4s about a foot longer than the diameter of the barrel and bolted down into them. We'll see how it survives!
It is a good idea on the video, but it will not work for cattle with horns. I made 6 of these and i had a really hard time getting them off my bulls and horned cows.
How do you keep the water out of it? Get a heavy blowing rainstorm and it will go right inside, or just from the rain bouncing off of the tire into it. Seems like you need to cut a piece of rubber a bit larger than the hole and fasten it to the top. Cow can then push their head into the barrel and get the rain out when not in use.
Thank you so much Dr. Matt Poore for graciously giving your time and sharing your knowledge. Your video is just what I was looking for.

Thanks Dr. for taking the time to make a very nice video...
Made two of them, works great 👍. Very easy to do!
Made it and it works great! Bolted brushed on the sided of the barrel for cows to scratch on.
Fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing.
great idea. Thanks for shear it.
I used a 22.5 inch tyre with 2 inch bolts, bolted the cutout on top and they use it to scratch. Thanks for the design!
This is a good idea. Thank you

Very nice. Thanks.
Yeah really easy design and worked just as planned. I added 2 push brooms on the side as a spot for cattle to scratch on.

Good idea our old bull would have played puck with the barrell
How are you that made this keeping the minerals dry? I followed the instructions to a T and my minerals still stay wet from rain.
Made the feeder in about 25 minutes. It was easy and seems to work great.

I can not find loose, free feed trace minerals anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction?
