      Wendigo this isn’t “healthier” in the sense that it is more nutrients. It’s like giving your cattle celery. It’s 90% water with very little nutrient matter. It’s better to just give the cows the actual barley gain then the sprouts

  • @RURALTVNZ
    @RURALTVNZ 3 года назад +5

    We did a video on a product similar to this in Canterbury New Zealand using barley as the sprouting grain. The farmer we talked to said that the beef animals did take a few days to get used to it but really loved it after a few days. The system is easy to use, requires little manual input and one of the biggest advantages (not mentioned) is water saving, imagine how much water would go into irrigation of 1000kg plus of grass per day. We shot some great footage of the animals running for there feed and devouring this like there was no tomorrow. Great system and so glad to see businesses like this exporting these products to the world. Keep on innovating!

    As a dairy farmer couple of questions one do you have studies showing how beef graded out on fodder as opposed to traditional methods of feeding/grazing? Two on the dairy side what about milk quality/quantity? As well the effects on reproduction breeding back is a very important aspect of the economics of beef/dairy hence the reason farmers went to a TMR ration controlling mineral protein and energy in the animal diets. Now granted you can free choice mineral and I'm sure you could grow alfalfa, brome etc if need be but not on the same mat which is more time consuming to feed separate mats as well as more difficult to balance a ration. I am definitely not bashing the system I see the good in it but these are questions you need to be able to answer in order to claim its both sustainable and more economical for livestock operations. Guys running 100 plus head of cattle especially dairy guys are very very critical of feed rations if you can not provide hard evidence that milk production, components, fertility, liver function etc will not be compromised and production cost will be cheaper then you are going to have a hard time in this space. Once again love the idea and would love to see some data on how it actually can sustain my herd and be more profitable but need some numbers other 90 percent digestible bc that doesn't equate to performance necessarily.

    I've researched this quite a bit a while ago, and all studies found that the weight ratio of the sprouted barley vs the seeds makes no difference in nutritional content. It becomes more dilute with volume increase.
    The aninals do like it though. It does also provide moisture and roughage. Perhaps animals absorb more efficiently.
    The main benefit for this system is drought resilience, but then again you could also just feed to grains to the animals.

    • @FodderGroup
      @FodderGroup  2 года назад +4

      Jason I don’t think anyone sensible would think the weight ratio would have any correlation to nutritional value. Nutrition certainly does not dilute over the 4 days we grow it, in fact it is harvested at very close to its nutritional peak.
      It does however have a direct correlation to the financial viability of growing feed this way.
      The main benefit is nutrition and digestibility and cost and health benefits and anti inflammatory properties and feed efficiency and I could go on.

    So many people here saying you can't raise pigs like this. Of course you can, regardless of breed. I raise pasture pork on no grain at all by feeding them hydroponic sprouts instead.
    Young sprouts are more nutrient dense than dry grain because the sprouting process activates the amylase enzyme in the seeds which makes less digestible nutrients more readily available. Pigs can't digest cellulose in mature grass just like humans can't do so, but if you feel a week-old grass sprout compared to mature grass, I'm guessing you'll realize the difference. Further, sprouted grass from feed grains and legumes is very different from what you'd find in your lawn or even a typical pasture.
    Anywho, unless you're a pig farmer, sit down and shut up.

      Grace Horsley Hi Grace. Many people don't know that fodder fed pigs have won many taste testing competitions in the USA. Further, the nutrition of the pork is off the charts. Love to discuss this with you, our email is sales@foddergroup.com if you'd like to get in touch.

    • @milanradojicic8212
      @milanradojicic8212 3 года назад +1

      As far as I know, You can use them but Barley is best for its capacity to grow in less time and to have more nutritious value.
      Second, you should not use fodder only, it is protein supplement to the diet. And for cows, sheep and goats should be used 30% HF to 70% of hay, silage etc. For pigs should be used in 50-50 ratio, but for one kg of commercial food goes two kg-s of HF

    • @AJ-ox8xy
      @AJ-ox8xy 3 года назад

      You can use wheat but it will take you almost twice as long. I feed fodder to my pigs, dairy cow, and horses. They do very well on it, but inorder to grow it fast enough i have to use barely. Wheat takes 12+ days while barely takes between 4 to 8 days.

    How are the internal temperatures on these units in hot climates? Also do the nutrient reservoirs have refrigeration systems or are they insulated another way? In the west coast of the US were dealing with air temps that can exceed 120F (49c) can these units handle the outside airtemps and sun.

    The video says it's drought proof. Except for the barley? I guess it would depend a lot on barley prices. I was watching a Pennsylvania farmer feed corn stalks to his cows and they loved it. Since cows will eat a variety of food sources, is this the best option? Would a simple grass seed do the same thing? This looks like a good system.
