- Silent film (Audio dubbed by me) from Vapor Trails, c/o High Horizons via the archives of Mr. David Robbio. Brief, but very nice scenes of classic airliners on the ramp at BOS in '68. Noteworthy is the Pan Am DC-8-33, seen here with numbered days as a "Jet Clipper". A beautiful BOAC Vickers Super VC-10 also included! Love the BOAC VC-10! What a time to be a plane spotter.
As an American, I watched something where they said passengers preferred the VC10 in regards to reduced noise and getting in the air quicker while the 707 would still be on the runway. I agree, the VC10 felt very exclusive, also the speed record. Service was ridiculously "spot on"
My Dad flew for Northeast during the Yellowbird era. Loved going to Logan as a kid in those days.
Excellent footage. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful time in commercial airline history. I flew the Allegheny DC-9 30 many times as well as the Eastern Airlines DC-9 30's and Boeing 727-200 Whisperjets. This was airline service at its finest. Loved walking out on the ramp and walking up the air stairs, I can relate to the comment below about smelling the combination of jet kerosene and coffee brewing in the galley, don't forget stale cigarette smoke also. Only a true airline buff would appreciate that. Also the wonderfully dressed passengers and crew. Oh to go back just one time to experience it all once again.

In August of 1969, I came home from the Vietnam War. I flew a stretch DC8 from Seattle to Chicago, and from Chicago to my home in Harrisburg, PA, I flew in an Alleghany Airlines DC9. The pilot was talking to me when I got on board and he told me he was a Korean War vet. Another Vietnam War vet got on the flight as well. The three of us had a nice talk, and then we got out seats and both us fell asleep while the pilot and crew took us home. When we landed in Harrisburg, the pilot got on the loudspeaker and announced we have two soldiers coming home from Vietnam and he asked that the people in the cabin allow the two of us to get off the jet first. I was surprised that many of the people clapped. I was sort of embarrassed and surprised... so I gathered my things from the overhead compartment and rushed off the plane so as not to delay the others from getting off. When I got to the bottom of the steps of the DC9 jet, the pilot was on the tarmac to again say "thank you." And from there I ran to the arms of my wife and family. At that point I was moving forward to have two children, get a job and bought a home. And now as I type this note, it's 49 years later and I'm retired, taking care of my weak knees and trying to lose weight....

Great video!!! I could watch those real airliners all day. Just like old cars, you could tell which one they were by a quick glance. Now a days, hummm, oh look, there goes another two huge enginesd airliner.
I miss these days...Man oh man, I loved the 727-200's..Great aircraft....We had the last of them at United back in 1999..

One day in the future they say virtual reality may be delivered to us through our nervous systems. Then we can literally step back into this moment of real airplanes (unlike today's generic ), and experience the sonic delights of the past as if we were right there on the observation deck. Imagine a virtual ride on a TWA 707 in 1968 and not being able to tell the difference, engines screaming, the old classic kerosine smell mixing with coffee, and every bump just as it would be in reality. Until then, thanks again for these classics!
I like your comment about the kerosene smell mixing with the coffee smell as you would walk into the forward door of the plane, through the small galley and into the passenger cabin. Did this many times at my local airport here with Allegheny DC-9 30's, Delta DC-9 30's and 727-200's, Eastern DC-9 30s and 727-200's Whisperjets.

My first flight was on a Northeast Yellowbird 727 Boston to Tampa in 1968. This sure brings back some memories. I wish Delta would bring back Northeast Airlines, or at least do one of their planes in the NE livery.
Wow! What memories. I flew on TWA's "Star Stream" 880s and 707s, and Allegheny's DC-9 "fan jets" And I loved seeing that BOAC VC-10. I've always wanted to fly on one of those, but never got the chance to. I've flown on more 727s and DC-9s than I can count. The trips between Chicago's O'hare and Stapleton Airport in Denver were long and full of "potholes" (turbulence) especially the westbound flights.
My first airplane ride was out of Logan in 1970 aboard a NorthEast Airlines DC-9. We were waiting on standby with about 10 other people. My neighbor worked for NorthEast and I remember seeing him talking to the gate agent. Then our names were called first.

Wow, this had really good sound quality for footage that old.
NorthEast's thirteen DC-9's were absorbed into Delta after the merger in 1972. Shortly after one of them was landing at Logan in heavy fog. It had a different flight director system than the DC-9's that Delta owned. The Delta crew got confused by the different set-up and flew the jet into a seawall at the end of the runway. One passenger lived for a few months but no one else survived.
We used to fly NE Yellow Birds??? Whisper jets from BOS to Tampa in those days. We always were seated next to the engines in back, so it wasn't a Whisper Jet flight for us...lol.

Another great glimpse into the past. Question: How do you transfer footage like this to video? Your footage is excellent. Do you send the film out or do it yourself? I have a lot of 8mm home movies to digitize, so I'm curious.
I use Service Video Taping, Inc in Bellevue, WA. So far, they have been able to do every job for me.

Yep, sorry 'bout that Gary...I just came into 66 minutes of footage spanning 1968-76, and out of all that, any/all '227 clips are only about 1-2 seconds long. :-( The whole thing is mostly bits and scraps, but there will be about 4-5 more videos from this set coming...a PSA Electra flight (Interior) departing LAX circa '76, and some interior footage of an AA 707 on the ramp at BOS from '68 are coming soon, plus a few more items.
Man, the global warming nazis heads would explode if they ever watched this video.
