- Now that you've seen how to blend colored pencils in part 1, learn how to get even richer and deeper blends using base layers and odorless mineral spirits. Artist Jennifer Stay shows you two of her favorite colored pencil blending tools to get even better results! Works with both wax and oil based colored pencils such as Prismacolors and Polychromos. I travel gamsol is highly flammable and not easily taken on planes as many balk seeing that label - it is legal it's flash point is a bit too low but... baby oil does well with a VERY LIGHT layer and no problems taking through security in any country I've been to! So just a traveler's tip (PS Polychromos are LOVELY melting with Baby oil just like painting!)
You know i have watched these two videos (and several others) several times - for example starting a new/different tri-color blending book, or when swatching new pencils (which i tend to have several sets of :-D. Thank you for sharing all of these tips, tricks, and techniques.

OMG! THANK YOU, Thank you, thank you!!!!! I tried this technique and achieved FANTASTIC results. I was primarily an occasional graphite artist since I was old enough to pick up a pencil; well, because it was all that we could afford. It was after my stroke when I lost the use of my dominant hand that I found myself with all this extra time and nothing to do. So I decided to pick up the art of colored pencils for therapy and to train the use of my other hand. I would get okay results but it wasn't what I was looking for. I researched You Tube for color pencil videos but they always went too fast for me to follow. Until, I came across your video and thought I would give it a try. WOW I finally found a technique I could use. So again - Thank You!

Dang it, Jennifer! Now I have to get some stumps and spirits! Love your videos! I watch and re-watch while coloring. I finally bought a little book of blank swatch pages so I could toss it into my gear bag when taking my coloring with me. Anneliese Theros I don't have the drawing mojo I had in my younger days but I can darn sure get my coloring on. Some of us are born to draw and some of us are born to color.
Coloring Pages Bliss It's like with expensive makeup - there's always a less expensive dupe out there somewhere. And if you have your heart set on a more expensive item, search the Internet for the best price and then see if there is a discount code online. I very rarely pay full price for anything.

Oh, my, great tips here. Love using the highlighter or other color underneath. I do not have alcohol markers but I do have some tombows and highlighters I could try out. I'll have to swatch them. I had see another video where instead of gamsol, they tested the baby oil, and olive oil and alcohol. Interestingly the alcohol did really well, I wonder how it would perform here. Thank you so much for this. Oh, next, I'm going to be looking for a paper video. I am willing to bet you've covered it already. I'm also going to head to your site and see whats available there. So glad I found your site.

Love learning new things; however, the highlighter base layer somehow just doesn't "work" for me. The highlighters leave "lines" when you put down the layer of highlighter that the lightest of the three chosen colors doesn't cover. ???
+Lynne Bailey, yes they do...I usually use the lines to my benefit...like texture in grass or hair. Also, if you use a darker trio of colors, those lines will disappear. They were less evident in person. One more interesting note...the yellow highlighter doesn't leave those stripes for some reason. That is another reason why the yellow is my favorite of all the highlighter colors.

Hi Jennifer! not quite sure where to leave this question, so i thought your recent video would be the best bet. would you ever consider reviewing some of the cheap pencils on Amazon that aren't quite school grade but not quite artist grade, like Sudee Stile, Southsun, Marco Raffine, etc? I'd really like to see your thoughts on the Sudee and Southsun, as I've been considering purchasing them but can't find any reviews as in depth as yours tend to be.

Wow, do you realize how many times you said the phrase "Jennifer's rule of blending thirds" it was crazy, was there some reason for it!
OK, call me dense lol I watched the first tut 5x. Watched this one 2x before it totally registered lol I was still having trouble I would start out pretty lightly and second coat my hand said there is not much color there, the heavier my hand got. The end result was a darker color with dark highlights. The lighter color of the 3 was showing up like a spot not blended at all. So I would go heavier on the other two colors. NOI get it lol Light layers only lol Oh, my! lol Thank God I don't give up! lol My coloring is much better now. Your new friend in creativity Joy n ( Izzy my canine companion )
Blending rectangular shapes is great practice for swatching but I need to learn to blend other shapes like leaves, petals, letters etc. Can you show us how to apply shading in coloring pages too?

Hi! Thanks so much for your wonderful videos. They are very helpful. One question - when doing the base layer in highlighters, except for yellow, you can see sort of stripes where the strokes meet. Any tips on getting rid of the stripes? Thanks again for these very educational videos 😃
Those stripes can be pesky. The highlighters are a strange marker...not exactly waterbased and not exactly alcohol based...that’s what makes them sort of float on the top of our papers. Because of this, any overlap of ink will create those stripes. So...I try to avoid overlap - I sometimes double up the strokes to embraces the stripes - I strategically lay my strokes so the stripes work with whatever I’m coloring. Another idea would be to use alcohol markers in place of highlighters but those have their own issues. Have fun!
Wow! Jennifer, you just changed my coloring world, lol! I am so excited on how you did Jennifer's Rule of Blending Thirds (you can say that as many times as you want throughout your video for it drives it home for me). I am a beginner!
I do have Gamsol and forgot what I bought it for, now I know. I was working on Birthday Cards & Christmas Cards for my children who live in the States (I live in Costa Rica) and kept thinking how I needed to find out what do I do at the end to keep the colors from bleeding if they get wet. I'm not sure if using the Gamsol at the end helps that or not.
Would you be able to advice me on once all the images are colored, how do I set the colors. I have heard horror stories of when people mail their cards and they get wet due to being delivered in the rain, the colors have all run together.
I look forward to hearing from you, hopefully soon, for my daughter will be here on 19 Sept to take all my cards back with her to mail for me (I try to do a year in advance).

It’s your LIL (late-in-life from now on 🤪) - I have a bedroom convert(ing) into art space, with min. spirits in a small bowl will I still need a fan? I have a ceiling fan & open window next to me. Enough ventilation? Thanks 🍱
With the mineral thing though, it looks like watercolor and not colored pencil, which I am not a fan of. Its a different look than plain dark color.
So can you stop the alcohol markers from bleeding through the page if you used Mixed Media paper instead of regular paper? 🤔
Do you need to let the stump dry completely before cleaning them?
+Mistress Sherry, not necessarily. If the stump is dry, it will sand off easier, but you can still clean it when it is wet.
Great tutorial on different blending methods! Quick question though. I'm getting ready to do a project that will incorporate watercolors covered by layers of Caran d'ache Luminance and Faber Castell Polychromos pencils and plan on blending with Mona Lisa odorless mineral spirits with a brush. Do you think there'll be any problems blending the colored pencils on top of the watercolors in this manner?
+Dale Crossley, I don't think so...especially If you make sure you let the watercolors dry. You could also spray a workable fixative after the watercolors if you are concerned.

Can you accomplish the same using the prismacolour colourless blender pencil?
+Crafting With Louisa, oh I love my colorless blinding pencil...I just finished using it on the hair of a drawing I was working on. It is great as a final step blending tool because it can really help all the layers come together and make the colors more vibrant. But...it does flatten the texture of the paper, so it wouldn't work well in place of the odorless mineral spirits.

Vtry baby oil on polychromos- no toxic smell
Try baby oil instead of Gamsol… the Gamsol gave me instant headache, its so toxic. Why do they call it odorless?! And its supposed to be less odor than other mineral spirits? Many artists recommend baby oil as good alternative, and who doesn’t love the scent of a ( lean) baby 🤗

... maybe because it's sort of comedy? As she did not invented that method and it's common knowledge within the colored pencil artists community it is kind of funny to allways refer to it as "her rule".
