It was translated in Greek as δρακων, "dragon", and in Latin that dragon was translated as serpens, snake. So your point of praying towards the east is irrelevant as Muslims don't pray towards the east we pray in the direction on the Ka'ba east, west, north, south or in-between.

Jesus purposely tried to get people away from focusing on the "physical" aspects which is more so the old testament ways. But, instead to focus on the spiritual. So when the bible states to inscribe his words in our hearts and our minds, he means by remembering and putting them into practice in our everyday lives. He adopted John's concept of baptism, meaning that one only had to do it once. I think that the difference between the two concepts is that traditionally, ritual cleanliness was thought of as a physical state and Jesus thought of it as a spiritual state.

In modern colloquial Egyptian the word for a man who has gone on the trip to Mecca is Hag and for a woman, Haga. Hag is pronounced the same in Hebrew and colloquial Egyptian Arabic.
