I have noticed that my iPhone and iPad randomly require a passcode after a few days of not using them. I don’t think they reboot themselves, but there seems to be some security feature that’s existed for some years across different versions to go into BFU mode to prevent this type of thing.
If you have an iPhone, just rapidly press the sleep/wake button 5 times in a row. And it forces a person to type in the PIN number to unlock it rather than use facial recognition.
3:23: You can very quickly disable faceID on an iPhone by simply invoking the power menu by holding the power button and one of the volume keys. Once the power menu comes up, you can dismiss it and the phone will not be unlockable without the passcode. This is not the true BFU state, but it is an additional layer of security.

Related: my S22 just showed a new option from Google to enable some kind of theft lockdown. From the graphics, it seems like it can detect when someone nabs and runs with your phone using gyros, locking it in the process.
My suspicion is that this is a security feature involving the UWB communications. It’s present on iPhones past the 11 series, excluding both SE’s, and literally nobody can disable it; it stays active even when the phone is completely powered off. It’s the same tech used for tracking AirTags, and since the main point is to prevent theft, it doesn’t surprise me that a device will itself when a device is sequestered for too long; keep in mind, criminals are going to be using the same stuff in this context, so keeping your data secure against potential criminals would be considered important.
Yeah and to make it faster ask Siri to shutdown then confirm. Might faster/easier than pressing buttons and sliding to power off especially if you’re in cuffs. Lol

This week i just received a "Anti-theft feature" notification on my Android. I could turn on a feature where it locks itself if its status goes to offline. Another feature was that it will lock itself if it detected someone yanking your phone out of your hand. No idea if that lock mode enables BFU like the panic lock, but still interesting.
It's not BFU. It simply works as if you press your power off button, so you can unlock your phone via biometrics (e.g., fingerprint, etc.). True BFU happens whenever a device is restarted.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you hold volume down + lock until the Slide to power off shows up, I think that puts it into BFU mode as well since Face Id/Touch Id gets disabled until u enter a pin. Which is very easy todo with your phone still in your pocket.
it doesn't. You can still access control center, camera and whatever else when doing that. It just disables biometrics, but it doesn't put it in BFU state.
I just imagined how stunned the officers would be to see such content 😄but on the other hand it could make them think, you've filmed this because you have something else to hide. Most cops I've had encountered are pretty paranoid.
That's not true. It annoys the police department, but they already have the device to send signals while in a paradox box. We know this because GrapheneOS has been using the same method since 2017, and they still managed to retrieve data after first unlock situation.
Those systems were already in place for other purposes primarily, that's the difference When you design something to be encrypted in a way that even you can't get in, then no one can force you to do anything, you can't change maths
I’ve found this to be true on an AFU iPad running an old version of iPadOS. If I leave it on the charger for an extended period of time (week or two) I will come back to it on the passcode screen with Wi-Fi disabled, indicating a BFU state. It’s possible the device has a hardware issue or there’s a software problem, but if the fuds are leaving devices unattended while charging for extended periods of time I’m surprised they haven’t found this out sooner.
If you think you might be apprehended by police and are afraid they might try to force you to use faceID to open your iPhone, you don’t even have to actually turn it off, you can just start the manual shut down process (get to the bar that you drag to shut it down) and it’ll turn off faceID. In other words, all you have to do is hold down power and volume up, or press volume up, then volume down, then power in quick succession. This will force you to password unlock it even without turning it off, and passwords are still protected by the 5th amendment in most states (although a couple courts have ruled that you can be forced to give a password if the police can prove they already know what’s on the device).
The vault will not affect radio signals from within the vault, it just prevents outside radio signals. Radio signals can be sent from one device to another even though both are located within the same Faraday cage.
John Mcaffee said in an interview that if you have a hacker and a hardware engineer you can unlock any device ever because its a hardware issue, the FBI knows this very well too
this is literally the first feature that might convince me that Apple cares about our security. Ive been waiting for android to do this, but even with their recent update bringing in several 'anti theft' features, these features coincidentally stop right at having your phone shutdown/reboot or somehow goes around the ability to shut it down automatically. (hopefully its not a bug, and is a feature)

@@tfpnation6925you don’t need to cut of the face for it to work and dead peoples faces can still unlock Face ID unless their body is mutilated beyond recognition.
To quickly secure your iPhone, press the right button 5 times in quick repetition. This will put the phone into emergency mode. In this mode, you can either send an SOS message, open the medical ID data, turn off your phone, or log in to your phone with your passcode. This mode exists so that other people can use your phone to make an SOS call, or paramedics can look up your shared Medical ID information if they arrive on the scene and you are unconscious, all without having to know your passcode or unlock your phone with your fingerprint or face. While your iPhone is in Emergency Mode, it cannot be unlocked with Touch ID or Face ID, only with your passcode. Emergency mode is not as secure as BFU because WiFi and cellular still work and the storage key is still in memory somewhere (in BFU state it's only in the secure enclave and only unlocking the phone with passcode will load it into memory), but USB access is limited in this mode so attacks that would normally be possible via USB connection won't work in this mode. It's the best you can do if you only have a few seconds, and if you have a few seconds more, you can power it off with a swipe in this mode.
I think this feature is likely a lot simpler than it's made out to be. My guess is that, when a phone does not have a cellular signal for a long time (or maybe not unlocked *and* without a signal for a long time), it will reboot. This method does not need outside communication. Now, if Apple was really smart, this system may possibly send a signal to other nearby phones saying "I rebooted because I met the conditions," which the nearby phones could then account for when matching their own conditions. It could be 16 hours for no signals received, 8 hours for one signal, 4 hours for two signals, and 2 hours for three signals. This would prevent a DOS while still being significantly more secure than even the 16-hour window. Whatever the system is, it's based.

from someone who has worked inside a cyber crime LE environment, phones being worked on by cellebrite aren't generally held in faraday storage unless it's suspected that the individual has sent a wipe command or is otherwise suspected that something might happen to the data if it is exposed to the network. the rooms themselves generally aren't faraday caged.

I have an iphone13 and can confirm that when I was on ios 18, I was experiencing random freezing and restarts out of nowhere. I since updated to 18.1 and the issues went away.
The term vault doesn't necessarily designate a faraday cage. It can just be a strong room, which won't necessarily block all wireless signals, even if it may weaken them.
I am working with radio modems and it is a totally normal thing to reboot such a thing if there isn't a cellular connection for some time. Of course, with a phone this could cause some problems, because it has to get unlocked...
That feature is something that GrapheneOS and other alternative AOSP firmwares had for a very long time. To be honest, for me it is hard to believe that Apple would give so much personal security to their end users, especially considering that in this state the phone is effectively disabled from their surveillance network
This sounds great, as long as it's been done the right way- which would be to have the phone reboot after a certain period of no successful screen unlocks (preferably with the option of updating that period, and customizing when it kicks in based on the location or lack of cell signal/airplane mode enablement). It's no good if screen touch activity is able to reset that timer, in which case this could obviously be manually or automatically circumvented by bad actors like phone thieves/police.
@@ticktockbamSo when I just hold down the buttons and go into BFU (without powering down) I am in a kinda BFU mode? Biometrics are disabled but most things are still unencrypted. Right?

I think it’s likely that apple is being the good guys in public while simultaneously being the "good" guys that are also opening the phones up and giving government access to devices with and without warrants.
Congratulations you figured it out! Apple it self has the tools to send a signal unlock, when the phone is put in a locked state. Law enforcement doesn't want to "work" with Apple aka pay them the money for "consultation". They want access to Apple cloud network tools for themself for free.
Indeed, if you look up "apple Global Police Summit" you will find a recent forbes article about them hosting conferences with law enforcement agencies on how they best cooperate. And now with Trump incoming I suspect they're only going to get even more obedient with US law enforcement to avoid tariffs and what not.
@ Apple might get more cooperative because big tech has major TDS and think Trump supporters need to be censored and monitored but they likely won’t experience any tariffs because they’re a domestic company unless Trump wants iPhones to be made domestically which is not probable.
Reboot after 24h of no contact with mother-ship apple/cellular signal/air plane mode seems pretty reasonable security/troubleshooting measure. Maybe it behaves the same as with latest ipads. If you have not used it for 12-24 hrs it disables biometrics which almost looks like soft reboot.
My friend told me about this story where she had a friend who tragically died in a house fire, and when police were trying to access their phone to see if the fire was purely accidental or intentional seeing as they were the only one in the house when the fire had happened, Apple had refuse access for the police no matter what the reason was
I wish that (auto reboot 6, 12 or 24 hours after last unlock) was a setting in Android. Like, some devices from some brands can generally schedule to shut the phone off, but that will happen at a set time no matter if you've recently unlocked it or not. I guess if you shut it off over night anyway you can set it to a time you are certainly never awake (something between 1 and 7am for most people) to have the peace of mind that if a thief or fed gets it they'll have to deal with the locked state if they leave it over night.

Already had this before, I hate it because it locks me from using languages I'm actually proficient at, or exercise my choice or accessibility need for the original captions or audio.
But back then I thought that was the video maker providing half assed AI voiceover tracks and not an alpha, now beta, of a functionality that's interesting in theory but horrible in execution.
The fact it is NOT a choice is what makes it horrible.
Yeah it’s called A/B testing or split testing.
My hypothesis:
When the unit is in airplane mode and there's no connection to the FMIP network or any other type of network, a countdown begins and when it reaches 0, it reboots.
This could explain why units that were in Faradeh cages also rebooted.
Very smart this would make great scene for apple, simple and effective
I don’t think it needs to be an airplane mode, though, I think it’s just if the device is inactive for enough time without having been unlocked it’ll just reboot

If you hold it like 10 seconds, doesn't it force a shutdown? I'm only on Android
Thats an awesome tip. Thats something you could do in less than a second before you lose your phone, to the cops or to a mugger or something
Or simply don’t have facial recognition on your phone?

Impossible on apple phones because they don't give app any access to that function

3:23: You can very quickly disable faceID on an iPhone by simply invoking the power menu by holding the power button and one of the volume keys. This AI translate bug is hilarious but also disproportionately detrimental to the channels that had no say in being lab rats for it
My suspicion is that this is a security feature involving the UWB communications.
Finally I can believe Apple marketing when they say "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"

On Iphone you can also press the off button for 5 times
The vault will not affect radio signals from within the vault, it just prevents outside radio signals.
Radio signals can be sent from one device to another even though both are located within the same Faraday cage.

Just about to say this.
Why is this in Portuguese and why does it not have an English audio track

from someone who has worked inside a cyber crime LE environment, phones being worked on by cellebrite aren't generally held in faraday storage unless it's suspected that the individual has sent a wipe command or is otherwise suspected that something might happen to the data if it is exposed to the network. the rooms themselves generally aren't faraday caged.

probably a Swiss cheese ...
No english audio track, thought I was tripping at first
That feature is something that GrapheneOS and other alternative AOSP firmwares had for a very long time.
To be honest, for me it is hard to believe that Apple would give so much personal security to their end users, especially considering that in this state the phone is effectively disabled from their surveillance network
thank god, stupid youtube isnt trying to force me into the bad german as default
It requires password even without rebooting. Just spend a few hours without touching it and it will go into BFU mode.
From my understanding that just disables biometrics, but the files remain mostly unencrypted
Yeah, that doesn't work. Data still remains in the phone's ram. You have to turn it off for it to go into BFU mode.
@@ticktockbamSo when I just hold down the buttons and go into BFU (without powering down) I am in a kinda BFU mode? Biometrics are disabled but most things are still unencrypted. Right?

have you tried turning it off and on again?😀
fun fact apple does have a magic key they call it back doors. the articles are just a marketing gimmick so you trust them more
They are probably rebooting because there is no signal whatsoever. This does usually not happen in the wild. Good idea.
They probably want the police to go through them to get the data, forcing them to pay instead of using a backdoor.
So why are cops needing cellbrite or NSO tools?
Thank you for sharing this. Have a great rest of your day, too! 😁😁
