  • Details from the Tomatin website:
The Tomatin 12-Year-Old is classically smooth, having been matured in traditional Scotch Whisky, ex-Bourbon and ex-Spanish Sherry casks. Aromas of wild heather, pine and cedar soon sweeten to reveal notes of crème caramel with apples, pears and mango before a full-bodied and buttery finish, the 12-year-old is a distinguished sherry cask whisky with a little something different.

If I can find it I will try it! I rarely have a guard whisky and hit the higher ABV peated scotch whiskies right away and sometimes the 46% - so much better than 40%!! Great video!

Great review! I just purchased a bottle of this 12 year here in my hometown of New York City - came to RUclips to find reviews as I think it’s just fantastic for the price of 49 USD (39 GBP). I found out about Tomatin last year while in Edinburgh for the first time. A shop there had the 14 yr port casks edition, and after a sample tasting I just fell in love with it. Finished the bottle a month back and decided to find out which Tomatin offerings my local hometown seller had in stock. The 12 yr was the only one, sadly. I would have liked another of that 14 yr instead.
But the 12 yr is quite good! A very nice everyday sipping whisky, comforting to kick back with after a long day. And I don’t even wait… I start sipping right away! 😂 Love the spice at the end! White pepper… or even some peppermint peaking up there. A nice balance of sweet on the front, with fiery spice on the back end. Catches you right in your throat! But the finish is indeed on the medium lasting.
I think I will be buying this bottle again… if I don’t find that 14-yr somewhere else first!

    Thanks for reviewing Vin.
Have had some Tomatin expressions including some distillery only ones, the Cask Strength being my favourite.

Solid pour for a solid price. I'm 85% through a bottle of their CS and I love it. Excited to try more from them.

I regularly use the term 'guard whisky' as well so I appreciate you putting the explanation out there. I'm always getting asked wtf I'm talking about. 😅

🤣🤣. I'm thinking of making a video series about it. Or at least a dynamic webpage detailing my favourite guard whiskies

@@NoNonsenseWhisky It's a legit category. Could be a fun discussion... FWIW I'm with you - it's not enough to be inexpensive, they also have to be easily replaced. It's a useful exercise to me in that it helps me keep in touch with "basic" whiskies no matter how deep into the weeds I get with the nerd-tier stuff.

I think the guard whisky idea is very cool. Would love to see a dedicated video! Great review!

Big fan of both the 18y and the 14y port! Sadly I have found the Portuguese collection to below my - admittedly very high - expectations.

Love the idea of the guard whisky. I call them "blockers" as in my bottle of Naked Malt blocks me from reaching for the Glenfarclas 25. I think we all would enjoy a video of your favorite guard whiskys. Cheers!

I was just in the Scottish Highlands and picked up a bottle of the Legacy (Bourbon & Vintage Oak Casks) for my boss. I was lucky enough to get a crash course in Scotch, from blended and Lowlands to single-malt and Speyside vs Islay, by a local Highlander - he drove by many of the various distilleries, explaining how the various difference: one of my best vacation outings. He was a childhood neighbor of the baker/businessman Harry Gow, whose sausage rolls and scones are some of the best, handmade, fresh baked goods I've tasted that weren't from my wife's oven. The experience just added to my affinity and love for my family's homeland. It felt so natural to be back in Alba, eating a hot sausage roll, drinking my coffee and my wife's hot tea, whilst it was beautifully grey and cool in the late September Highlands towns of Invergordon and Inverness. Edinburgh is still my favorite city on earth, if I must be in a city, as it's where my 6 times great grandfather graduated from the University of Edinburgh to become a Presbyterian minister.

I've seen a few Tomatin bottles lately at local bottleshops in Australia and its reasonable price and I noticed a cask strength that might be worth a look into. Cheers mate

I think the entire range is solid, especially the 18 and Cask Strength, and the 12yo French Oak version is very good, but I do wish this 12 was 46% or higher to make it better standout from the riffraff.
It is interesting that you picked up on that hotness, because I claim Tomatin spirit can be a bit rough.

I really enjoy their 14 year and the 18 is good too. I have struggled liking the 12 year. I can enjoy it now, but not a favourite. Cheers!

There is a specific category of sherry influenced whisky's that I find off-putting and Tomatin 12 is a good example for me. Very lightly sherried which serve only to accent and add depth to something bourbon barrel aged is great...
... but if you add a touch more strength to the sherry notes such that you can notice them somewhat readily, then my experience of the bottle takes a nose dive. It's akin to taking a reasonably delicious fruit juice like grape juice and watering it down until you feel disappointed by what's in the glass and that is the same reaction I get from bottles that are just very lightly sherried.
Another example is Glenfarclas 10. This time it's because of a lack of time aging in sherry barrels and thus again, not imparting enough sherry influence. I call it the "uncanny valley" of sherry influence enjoyment.

Nice one Vin, I really like the concept of 'guard whisky', I'll adopt that with your permission 😃 I did try the old 43% and I was underwhelmed. Tomatin for me is an ok distillery if the price is right. Nothing too exciting but nothing bad either but like you said sometimes the prices really creep up and then it becomes a no go for me. I have yet to be wowed by Tomatin though. Cheers!

@@NoNonsenseWhisky I like the Cu Bocan range and yes the 12 is a decent dram but I when we held a Tomatin tasting with our whisky club the general conclusion was 'they're ok'. Though I did speak to some older generation enthusiasts and they said the spirit is getting better, whether it's true I don't know :)

I found it quite boring. The nose was biscuity , grassy , but not a lot going on. Palate was sweet , and your bang on about peppery…the pepper lasted longer on the tongue than anything else. Simply put , not for me. I couldn’t get much that I could say was positive. Easily forgotten. Enjoyed your review. Slainte 👍🥃
