This is smart stuff, and we could all use more storage space in our pantry! What I REALLY like is how the stock is automatically rotated to use the oldest first. That can be a challenge with horizontal storage. Thanks!
For those who have room I'd recommend a roll around set of steel shelves. Mine holds a thousand or so cans and I can walk around behind to add cans and choose from the front, and move it anytime I please.
I did mine different. I had mine tilted sideways. I think it holds more cans than yours. Nice job though. :-) I tell you food storage is WORK in itself. Building this shelf made it so much easier for me.
You did an excellent job. I was thinking that for the two sides where you forgot the finger space to grab the cans, you could maybe just drill out a spot for your finger to access. Perhaps a hole saw attachment, (the drill attachments for drilling doors to ready then for doorknobs) might work. But even with the minor changes you want to make, I think it looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing! One of my favourite rotators on RUclips👍🏻
You could add a toe kick area on that by adding a base built out of 2 x4's and then mount it to the wall into the studs. This is how they mount cabinets.
This is a really great idea but the only question that I have is with all of the canned stacked on top of each other is it hard to get the bottom can out
I really like this. I'd prefer not to have to bend so far over to get my cans off the bottom, so I'd prop it up on legs or bricks then screw it to wall. The sturdier version seems better holding so many cans.
Id have liked to see you pull out some of those cans...there is a lot of weight n those bottom cans to lift up and out...cant help feeling they will be really tough to get out?
I actually bought those. I can't remember the name of the company any more, but they are out of Utah. It is a family business. Actually, I think the company is something like 'Rack & Roll', but I am not 100% sure, and I am not sure if they are even still in business.
good Job Buddy! I hat the same idea last night but I wasn't sure yet which design to use but I will go for the who's hanging on the wall because taking less space : -)
But still how that aloud for date rotation .....you can mark dates on edges of boards for each row but that will take lot of Hassel to keep track of it . If you buy cans what are from other batches and with different dates how you manage that then .....
You say you tried to recover deleted files, but that would only find them if they were deleted. They may just be misfiled. Have you tried doing a search for them, using part of the file name? If the file names were auto-generated by your camera, look at the videos you created before and after them, and the numbers should be between them.
He can also search his computer for videos, sorting by the modified date. His should be at the bottom. Or upload another video (or pretend like he's going to), to see where the files are set to uploading to.
As far as I could tell it looks great. Hey as long as it gets the job done, right? Do you have plans drawn out, I would like to see them, I've been trying to out together a system in my pantry, but can't get anything to work.
Umm... I haven't tested it much, but I think it can get tight with a full column. I should go down and test it. I know that with 2/3 column it is fine. It wouldn't have hurt to have divided this into 3 sections instead of 2.
That was my question as I watched this. I think if I were to make this, I might have more splits in the rack to facilitate extraction. This is a good looking build though!
I have been studying your video of your rotator.. Does each slot contain the same food item or do you have them mixed or mixed in groups? Cause if you spot a can in the middle of the slot, you have to rotate the llower ones out to get to it. This puts all the other cans out of order for first in first out. So should you consider all the types of cans and foods you are going to store and try to have a slot for each group? In my case with 3 of us, I was thinking of a rotator system that is 24 inches wide ( my available space) and put 5 cans in each slot and have 3 ( 4 slot sections) for a total of 12 slots with maybe a few skinny ones on the end for tuna and chicken, etc. What do you think? Bob S - Brecksville, OH
Each slot should have the same item in it. This makes sure that you always use the oldest can first and nothing goes out of date. For stuff like skinny tuna cans, you will save space if you just stack them instead. You just have to remember to rotate them.
Great idea and equally nice execution of the project. What is your projected life span of the canned food and I presume that you are a mormon.. :-) If you are indeed a mormon, what is your flocks opinion on firearms and ammunition storage?
Well, we use most of the stuff we have in cans regularly, minus the corn (usually go with frozen). Unfortunately our corn has all expired.... but we haven't chucked it out yet. Yes, I am Mormon. I doubt there is a church policy on firearms and ammunition storage--and I doubt you would find anything on lds.org (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints website) regarding it. You will, however, find stuff on provident living. Food and water storage, and having a financial reserve. The closest the church would get to having firearms and ammo is "preparing every needful thing." I think that will be interpreted by everybody differently. We are to prepare every needful thing. I thought it prudent to have arms and ammunition, so I have been storing it. That is a personal choice, however.
In general I like it because its just darn COOL. But looking at it....thinking about it... I think I would prefer simple horizontal shelves. There seems to be so much room wasted with cans missing. I'd much rather have it go across and have the ability to two types of cans on the same self (for those that you normally don't buy a lot of).
My wife stacked some different cans in the same row for that reason. She pulls one set from the bottom and the other from the top. It sure saves us a lot of space removing the shelf-based rotators. I bet I freed up 12+ feet of shelf space.

Great explanation of your project. Bummer you lost the construction videos but this may have worked better in the end. I just built a can storage that doubles as a pocket door for the kitchen/bedroom. I am having issues getting the cans out so I started checking the web for ideas. Thanks for the video. Come on over and check out my videos. ruclips.net/user/iROBODUDE

Highlighting your lessons learned helps save the rest of us the time/cost having to learn from our own mistakes. Thanks for your candor.

@@JohnHarmon is your leg doing any better!?
This is nice. Might be great to put it along the basement wall and create a hidden or sliding panels to cover them up. :)
It's too bad you lost the video, but your explanation was very thorough.

April 2020 covid-19 lockdown, on 3rd week self- quarantine. I need this on my pantry to organize my food storage.
You need a curved lip in front of
Ur cans along with that kicker
To pull can's out smoothly,
Overall both of ur projects,
Beautiful job!!!

Use plywood instead of 1x3s, it will prevent the twisting you get with solid wood.
Yep, I should have done that.
Awesome, project. I plan to use your design, but go with lighter option. Really, smart idea. Thanks, for sharing.
This is the best one that I have seen. I really like it and you made it look like part of the wall. I plan to take your idea and add it to my kitchen.

Holy cow that stores a lot of cans!!!! Great idea! I forwarded a link to my wife. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I didn't show how much shelf space it freed up, but it was quite a bit. It just is using a very small mount of space now.
John Harmon - Cold Creek Works
I wish my storage in the shop could be that efficient! :)
This idea could be used on any free wall space regardless of how high or where it is located. A great idea to say the least.
Very nice looking. Looks like you may have also used caulking for the gaps, as I would. Great job, even with mistakes.
For your cutout use a router or dremel for the end cans
This is a really great idea but the only question that I have is with all of the canned stacked on top of each other is it hard to get the bottom can out
Yes, I mention it in the video. If I were to do it again I would have divided it into thirds instead of 1/2
@@JohnHarmon DANG IT! 😬

I only started looking for videos on this topic, because of a certain Ad on Facebook. 😏

Do you have a video or plans for the smaller brown can rotators that you have on your shelf?
I actually bought those. I can't remember the name of the company any more, but they are out of Utah. It is a family business. Actually, I think the company is something like 'Rack & Roll', but I am not 100% sure, and I am not sure if they are even still in business.

you don't drop them, hence the reason it is open in the front middle of each column
