dam nails are stronger then the wood.
I've seen bars that you get both sides of the 2x4 and catch the inside and outside of the slat less risk of splitting the wood out.
I did this with a pry bar and it broke every board on oak.

Yeah but using this tears the wood at the base and bends the wood where the nails are. Makes disassembling pallets easier though
