Tarsem’s career, at least a good chunk of it, was inspired by the film “The Color of Pomegranates.” Criterion has that on Blu-ray and Second Sight released a giant set that is OOP. It definitely inspired the REM Losing My Religion music video. The Fall is Tarsem’s masterpiece, though.
Hi Chase, I don’t think the issue is with the mistake being for few seconds or in the director’s cut version. The issue is the lapse in quality control. The boutique labels are churning out so many movies that either their staffs are extremely overworked or do not have time to do proper quality control. We have seen so many disc replacement programs recently. They should just slow down and do proper due diligence before releasing the movies. Marvel made the same mistake but realized the issue and is currently course correcting.
@maxpaynethehero Marvel is owned by Disney, they have dozens and dozens of streams of income, Physical media boutiques do not...if they don't release movies, they don't get money...kinda tough to compare them but I understand the sentiment...at the same time, people are already fussing that they want more and different titles so if they suddenly did less, people would be angry about that too... I'd also caution to remember that Arros's mistake is not Second Sight's and Second Sight's is not Vinegar Syndrome's etc (so we cant lymp it all together as 1 issue)...in other words, I'd agree if one company kept having all the issues but if there is 1 or 2 issues every few months from all of them combined, statistically that isn't much
@@AVAPopCultureI agree with Marvel being a giant and the boutiques do not have luxury as Disney may have, while I am looking at the Memento Mori release. It also takes time to request for the replacement disc, e.g. Labyrinth (Shout I know). It’s just frustrating at times that’s all but let’s all be grateful as well. Btw there are good examples. I cannot remember if there was any quality issue with Criterion in recent memory except the Citizen Kane disc.
Really enjoyed the video. You covered a lot! I remember seeing The Cell in the theater and when the credits popped up, my buddy said "I enjoyed the hell out of that but, I never want to see it again!"
I haven’t seen The Cell in about 20 years, so my opinions aren’t exactly fresh. I remember thinking The Cell had a great killer, with an amazing backstory, but fell flat because it focused on being a vehicle for JLo. I also remember it had some amazing visuals but it wasn’t enough to be a satisfying film. Thanks for the review and all the info you give about home theater setups.
4k blu rays are a bargain price…plus most times they throw in a blu ray digital copy..we need to support the studios and boutique labels as much as possible with our money 💴 😊
The MVD blu-ray release of Jess Franco's Diamonds of Kilimandjaro has the same problem. The stock footage scene of the crocodile swimming in the lake repeats itself on top of no effort made to fix the color faded print of the movie. This is why I keep bombarding VS and Severin to do a collector's edition release but still no takers. I really mean it, the MVD blu-ray is a bad release.
Yeah I remember The Cell being a very weird movie, and not in a good way. I need to revisit it tho. On your comments about movies not going up in price by as much as we all feel… I think you’re right - It’s likely an issue of there being more great options out there to buy coupled with FOMO on some boutique releases - it’s just taking more money to keep up with the hobby. When I was collecting in the early to late 90’s, laserdiscs were $35-50 for a “standard” CLV release. There were laserdisc equivalents of an Arrow chunky box that were considered a “special edition” and were in the $100 range. I remember paying around $100 for the Aliens Special Edition CAV laserdisc back in 1994 😮
Special features had interview with the director...it was a great watch also. i watched the movie, then hit play on the interview, sorta as background noise while cooking and cleaning. I had to stop c&c and sit to view. And it was 1.5 hour interview..it was great
The prices for blurays are certainly a lot cheaper than in the past. John Carter can be picked up for £6.99 and many can be had at that price. Boutique ones are also fairly affordable at £15.99 etc. Secondhand dvds .. often 10p or 20p. That 'error' in Cell wouldn't worry me in the slightest
Pulling out the Hollywood Video DVDs is taking me back. Now… bear in mind they did great sales all the time. I don’t recall exactly what they ran but I remember 4 for 20 promos. Man I miss it. Shoulda had 4 for 20 UHDs 😔
I remember seeing part of the cell back in the day on HBO, kind of reminded me of virtuality/dreamscape and oh check this out, what a Mark Hamill‘s famous 1990s outer limit episodes where he actually does the same thing, but uses it as a psychologist to help people out inside of their minds, they even mention it in the outer limits episode to see maybe why people are are killing or they become hero, killers, but yeah, classic episode, first season of the outer limits remake in the 90s.
The bright LCD screens on computers and phones, that super bright white light is making us blind. Filmmaker mode i use for most films, it darker blacks adds atmosphere horror spooky scenes. I also use it as a reference when tweaking the other Picture Modes. Calibration takes long long, most peoples eyes are messed up, give your eyes a rest 1 week to next because your eyes play tricks. 😅look.
Older classic movies that were actually shot on film will have screen grain. It's supposed to be there, because movies USED TO BE a film experience. Now that everything is digital, actually experiencing movies on film medium is gone. A purely digital movie that was shot on digital will have that ultra sharp look where every scene is perfect, every minute detail is visible. If that's what 4K collectors want, they really should stay away from older movies dating pre-2003 when digital filmmaking became the norm. I prefer older movies shot on filmstock with grain with imperfections like lines, cracks, and holes on the picture, it reminds me a human being actually made the movie. Take Planet Terror and Death Proof for example, that's how I love movies.
I didnt talk about grain because I have gone on at length about it and why it is there in other videos...this film's softness has nothing to do with grain; and film can also render a very very sharp image on the subject....where it differs is with digital there is less natural roll off (most everything is sharp in the picture with sudden "fake rolloff" ...this movie literally has a lot of soft muddy images ...while I agree with your point in general (and I dont like the digital look) that isnt the issue with this 4k film, neither is grain...
The Cell was always a fascinating watch for me and can't wait to see it on 4K. I also believe the $1 is not as strong as it was 10-15 years ago when buying media.
Always loved this movie since I saw it in theaters when it came out. It's a trip. That horse scene always gets me. I was hype for the 4k thinking the dream sequences would really pop. They definitely didn't pop as much as I was expecting, but still thought it was decent enough. I have the 65" LG G4. I've never been one to play with my color settings much as I'm not really knowledgeable in that realm. I found that choosing the "Cinema Home" preset in Dolby Vision and "Cinema" for a standard Blu gives me the best image quality overall. The Filmmaker mode always looked way too dark and washed out to me. If you have some tips for adjustments with some in-depth explanations behind them, I'd totally be interested in a video for all that. Always wanted to learn more about that stuff.
I actually went to a 35mm screening of The Cell last year and saw a 4k screening of The Fall. Tarsem was really on a roll back then. I haven’t seen any of his others but it seems to me like he really lost his creative vision after The Fall.
@ I had dismissed it originally for seemingly being like one of those special effects/green screen heavy man warrior “epics” that were so common in that era. Didn’t know it was directed by Tarsem until recently. I picked up the 3D blu-ray a couple of weeks ago. I’ll give it a try
I would describe this film as very original for the time. It's good not great but I love the idea they were trying to pull off. I think maybe it could be better if they remade this with todays technology.
Not trying to be disrespectful, but trying to say Tarsem Singh was impersonating David Lynch's style is unfair. They are two VERY different directors. Singh has his own vision(see THE FALL and r.e.m.'s losing my religion). But I do like that you do say it is a good movie. Love your channel!
@tonygonzales726 thanks man...I'd have to argue that the movie is very heavily inspired by Lynch's style... The Fall came 30 years or so after Lynch's first movie...there are also articles where he has said he was very inspired and influenced by Lynch - both adopt a surrealist style...I personally don't think Singh is at Lynch's level but there are certainly similarities of style
Funny that you review The Cell today! I just got it in my mail. Hehe. Loved it on dvd so will be fun revisiting it on 4K. Arrow will probably have a replacemect disc comkng. Like your reviews! Cheers!
I love David Lynch's films and "Twin Peaks", but please don't bring up the genius he was in comparison of Tarsem Singh. They're leagues apart... My major beef with this stinker, was It's art for art's sake visual premise was hollow and confusing. I didn't feel any emotional connection with any of its characters. Mistakes happen. Arrow has had a couple mess ups this year. I just don’t see a big issue. None of the boutique labels mess up to often.
